2009 Hyundai Nuvis Concept : Concept Cars
2009 Hyundai Nuvis Concept : Concept Cars

The Hyundai Nuvis Concept is the eleventh signature concept car to be designed at the company's California Design Center in Irvine, Calif. In addition to showcasing the brand's cutting-edge capabilities, Hyundai Nuvis Concept also hints at a possible design direction for a future-generation crossover, blending attributes of a tall urban car and a premium utility vehicle.

Consistent with Hyundai's pledge to lead all brands in U.S. fuel economy by 2015, Nuvis is powered by Hyundai's Hybrid Blue Drive architecture, which uses breakthrough lithium polymer battery technology.

EVOLUTION OF THE DESIGN

In developing the initial sketches, Hyundai designers considered the interplay of natural, fluid elements with more rigid surfaces and structures to create the illusion of constant motion. Specifically, designers studied the way water splits across and flows around the hull and sides of a boat, creating a wake, or the way wind shapes a snowdrift or flurries through trees. The living power of these elements is reflected in the Nuvis' design.

"Our goal was to create a living machine, constantly moving, that the driver and passengers could be part of," said John Krsteski, Hyundai Design manager. "There are no lines on or in this car that are standing still."

In addition to invoking the impression of irrepressible motion, the Hyundai design team took more practical matters into account as well. Hyundai Nuvis Concept is designed to accommodate the diverse interests of a modern, active couple. The Nuvis is meant to be comfortable starting its day at a desert retreat, arriving at the ski slopes in the afternoon and then cruising to a formal dinner that evening.

The design team sought to create a vehicle that would complement its environment, without making a negative impact. The versatility of the vehicle's design, combined with Hyundai's Hybrid Blue Drive technology, accomplishes exactly this.

EXTERIOR DESIGN
The Hyundai Nuvis Concept has an assertive face demonstrated by the strong, hour-glass shape that frames the blue acrylic shield grille and aggressive headlamps, whose two glowing white rings are offset by a pair of red rings on the tail lights.

Perched on top of 22-inch wheels, Nuvis' proportions are tall, strong and protective. The two body-side lines set up a flowing water effect, giving the appearance of motion.

In addition to the dynamic angles and firm stance, the Hyundai Nuvis Concept boasts a host of unique exterior elements.

"One of the coolest attributes of Hyundai Nuvis Concept is that the protective roof appears to float on top of the body through the use of hidden pillars and high-contrast glass," said Andre Hudson, Hyundai senior designer. "This effect starts at the headlamps and is carried all the way through to the taillights producing a tall, strong body-side and rear."

Large, gull-wing doors, either opened or closed, create unique front, rear and profile views. Blue ambient lighting cast across the body adds to the overall upscale feel of the vehicle.

An additional design element featured on the Hyundai Nuvis Concept is a brushed aluminum accent that spans the entire length of the vehicle. Normally, this type of trim is only found around the windows. On the Hyundai Nuvis Concept, this trim extends out from the headlamps, juts up along the hood and through the beltline, across the top and into the rear spoiler.

INTERIOR DESIGN

In keeping with the exterior design scheme, the Nuvis' spacious and luxurious interior is dominated by a cool, blue acrylic center stack that ebbs and surges in the manner of a river. The cascading floor, with its blue ambient lighting, further enhances an environment in which seamless technology flows, enveloping both the driver and passengers.

A current of information coming from the instrument panel streams throughout the cockpit, as passengers are able to access each other via Methode Electronics TouchSense® technology that links all four business-class seats. The car's infotainment system is fed by channels from the outside - the occupants, for instance, can learn of a restaurant's specials that evening as they drive past it.

The sculptured, comfortable seats are custom woven with a graduated fabric that is finished in a silver-to-black sunburst. The ecologically friendly seating fabric is provided by True Textiles, the industry's leading provider of environmentally responsible textile solutions. The Hyundai Nuvis Concept fabric is made from 100 percent post-consumer recycled polyester - reclaimed soda bottles - and increasingly sustainable manufacturing processes. Hyundai collaborated with True Creative to produce this unique fabric with an 80-inch repeat, providing a fabric that is as attractive to the environment as it is to the viewer. The matching seatbelts are provided by Harveys Original Seatbeltbags, a well- known manufacturer of handbags made out of seatbelt. Harveys also developed two matching handbags for the Hyundai Nuvis Concept.

In the rear, a high trunk floor houses the Nuvis' lithium polymer battery pack.

HYUNDAI'S HYBRID BLUE DRIVE ARCHITECTURE
Hyundai's all-new, homegrown Hybrid Blue Drive architecture helps define the Nuvis concept. Hyundai's proprietary parallel hybrid drive system mates the already-fuel efficient 2.4-liter Theta II engine to a 6-speed automatic transmission and a 30kW (205 N-m) electric motor for maximum fuel economy.

Hybrid Blue Drive has an all-electric mode and a parallel drive mode, meaning that the wheels are turned by power coming directly from the gasoline engine, or the electric motor, or both together, as conditions demand. This parallel hybrid drive architecture will serve as the foundation for future Hyundai hybrid drive vehicles, starting with the next-generation Sonata in the United States.

To maximize fuel economy, all of the Theta II's major driveline and cooling system components have been optimized to reduce friction, while the crankcase has been filled with low friction oil.

Engine management software automatically shuts off the engine when the vehicle comes to a halt, cutting emissions to zero. The engine automatically restarts when pressure is reapplied to the accelerator pedal due to the Integrated Starter Generator (ISG).

To further reduce fuel consumption, the Theta II's engine management software, which governs injection pressure, engine cycle timing and exhaust retreatment rates, has been revised. This control strategy assures that maximum efficiency is achieved during gentle acceleration, while greater power is immediately available during full acceleration.

During deceleration, regenerative braking also comes into play to help conserve energy.

To ensure that the engine runs at lower RPMs, the top three gear ratios in the transmission have been extended. Fuel economy is further optimized through the latest electric motor-assisted steering system which reduces power drain and low resistance tires.

The nine major components of Hyundai's Hybrid Blue Drive include:

An efficient 30kW electric motor, delivering 205 N-m of torque
A regenerative braking system
An integrated starter generator that enables the engine to turn off at stops and restart automatically under acceleration
A breakthrough lithium polymer battery package, with 5.3 Ah of capacity at 270 volts
Optimized Theta II 2.4-liter engine
6-speed automatic transmission with an improved-efficiency electric oil pump
Weight-efficient architecture coupled with a low drag coefficient
Electric air conditioning compressor
Hybrid power control unit
LITHIUM POLYMER BATTERY TECHNOLOGY

Hyundai's hybrid system stores its electrical charge in a 270V lithium polymer rechargeable battery (5.3Ah/270V) that surpasses both existing nickel-metal hydride and pending lithium-ion applications. Lithium polymer batteries are more durable and space-efficient than other, bulkier hybrid batteries.

Mercedes Teases S-Class Cabriolet : News
Mercedes Teases S-Class Cabriolet : News

Mercedes keeps on expanding its flagship S-Class with more models, and will soon add one more to the roster. But before it does, it's giving us this teaser of what's to come with an advanced look at the upcoming new S-Class Cabriolet.

The convertible model will be based closely on the S-Class Coupe we already know, only with a folding roof. Expect that dropping top to be constructed of several layers of fabric (as opposed to a folding metal top) with a glass rear window (instead of plastic) to keep it luxuriously isolated and insulated from the outside world when it's up, and let the wind and sunshine in when down. The Cabrio will bring the array of body-styles in the S-Class range up to six, with the convertible joining the existing coupe and four wheelbase lengths of sedan. Expect powertrain options to closely mirror those of the coupe, including S550, S63, and eventual S65 AMG models driving the rear wheels or all four.

Slotting in above the E-Class Cabriolet, the new convertible S-Class will be Daimler's "first luxury four seater cabriolet since 1971." It'll compete in rather rare company against the likes of the Bentley Continental GTC, Aston Martin DB9 Volante, Maserati GranTurismo Convertible, and even the upcoming new Rolls-Royce Dawn when it arrives. And judging from the timing of this preview rendering's release, we anticipate it'll arrive soon.

2016 Aventador Roadster : Concept Cars
2016 Aventador Roadster : Concept Cars

Lamborghini has unveiled the 2016 Aventador LP 750-4 Superveloce Roadster during The Quail, a Motorsport Gathering, one of the most prestigious automotive events on the planet. The Roadster earns the honor of being the first series-produced Lamborghini convertible to wear the coveted Superveloce emblem.

The Roadster gains the same menacing-looking body kit as the sold-out Superveloce coupe that debuted at the Geneva Motor Show last March. Crafted largely out of carbon fiber, the add-ons are designed to provide more downforce at high speeds, minimize drag, and direct more cooling air to the engine bay.

Lamborghini has not published pictures of the Roadster’s cockpit, but it’s expected to feature lightweight carbon fiber bucket seats and a SV-specific instrument cluster borrowed directly from the hardtop model. A power rear window lets the passengers enjoy the symphony composed by the engine.

Power for the Roadster comes from a naturally-aspirated 6.5-liter V12 engine that generates 750 horsepower at 8,400 rpm and 509 foot-pounds of torque at 5,500 rpm. Built entirely by hand in Sant’Agata Bolognese, Italy, the 12-cylinder pelts the Superveloce Roadster from 0 to 62 mph in 2.9 seconds and, given enough tarmac, on to an Autobahn-worthy top speed of over 217 mph. After all, Superveloce means “super fast” in Italian.

A seven-speed ISR transmission controlled by huge shift paddles sends power to all four corners via a grippy Haldex Generation IV four-wheel drive system. Lamborghini Dynamic Steering and a highly-advanced adaptive suspension system called Magneto Rheological Suspension help keep the power in check and the front end pointed in the right direction. In other words, the Aventador Superveloce Roadster is nothing less than an open-top race car for the road. Numerous weight-saving measures have lowered the Roadster’s weight to 3,472 pounds, a figure that makes it 110 pounds lighter than the regular — if you can call it that — Aventador Roadster. Like its tamer counterpart, it caters to sun worshipers with a compact two-piece carbon fiber hard top that can be neatly stowed in the trunk as soon as the clouds part.

Just 500 examples of the Lamborghini Aventador Superveloce Roadster will be built, and each one will carry a base price of precisely $530,075. That’s a lofty sum, but given that the convertible was introduced in Pebble Beach, California, we imagine more than a few examples have already been spoken for.

2016 Kia Sorento SXL AWD : Current Models
2016 Kia Sorento SXL AWD : Current Models

Korean automaker Kia approaches the fringes of the luxury market with the ★★★ 2016 Sorento SXL, a midsize SUV priced and equipped to compete with vehicles ranging from the Chevrolet Equinox to the Lincoln MKX.

The refinement of some of the Sorento's features doesn't match the leading competitors – even non-luxury models like the Nissan Murano and Ford Edge – but the striking SUV compensates for that with a long list of features.

The Sorento is one of the biggest midsize crossover SUVs, big enough that some models offer an option of three rows of seats for up to seven passengers.

The Sorento's primary competitors are five-seat SUVs like the Acura RDX, Equinox, Dodge Journey, Ford Edge, Hyundai Santa Fe Sport, Jeep Cherokee, Lexus RX, MKX and Nissan Murano.

That's a wide range of vehicles, but the Sorento has an exceptionally broad model line. In addition to either five or seven seats, it comes with front- or all-wheel-drive and a choice of two four-cylinder engines or a V6. All Sorentos have a six-speed automatic transmission.

Sorento prices start at $24,900 for a front-drive model with a 185-hp 2.4L four-cylinder engine. All-wheel-drive models start at $26,800 with the same engine. A powerful 2.0L turbo generates 240 hp and 260 pound-feet of torque from prices starting at $31,100 with front-drive and $32,900 with AWD. A 290-hp 3.3L V6 tops the lineup and starts at $31,700 for FWD and $33,500 with AWD.

I tested an AWD SXL with the 2.0L turbo that was very close to the top of the model line. It had two rows of seats, a large sunroof, Bluetooth audio and phone compatibility, voice recognition, navigation, adaptive cruise control, Nappa leather upholstery, lane departure warning and much more.

It stickered at $44,200. All prices exclude destination charges.

The Sorento's prices are generally at the low end of its competitive set, but it's among the largest midsize SUVs inside and out.

The front seat is roomy and has plenty of storage cubbies. The gauges are big and easy to read. A big touch screen and plenty of conventional buttons and dials make it easy to control audio and climate. The voice recognition system's understanding of contact names and navigation instructions is not as fast or accurate as the best competitors. The audio system crashed my USB-connected iPod Classic, a problem I've consistently had with Kia's UVO system. It worked fine streaming audio from my iPhone 6, however.

The interior of my vehicle was trimmed in appealing materials. The dash and doors were soft to the touch. Brushed chrome and black glossy plastic completed the package.

The rear seat is comfortable and roomy. The cargo compartment is bigger than all the competitors except the new Journey, RX, and the new 2015 models of the Edge and Murano.

The Sorento's exterior design is handsome, with a snub nose, sleek roofline and flared fenders.

The 2.0L turbo is powerful and fuel efficient. The transmission doesn't always shift fast enough to maximize the engine's potential, but its broad torque curve and high output make the Sorento a capable cruiser.

The Sorento rated 19 mpg city, 25 highway and 22 combined in EPA tests. The key combined figure trails only the 2015 Edge's 2.0L turbo among four-cylinder engines and the V6 Cherokee and Murano, both of which benefit from advanced transmissions. The Sorento's turbo-four also runs fine on regular gasoline, giving it an edge in affordability over the RDX, which scored the same combined mpg but uses premium.

The Sorento's ride is very comfortable. The suspension absorbs bumps from rough road surfaces with aplomb. The steering is very light and numb, providing very little feedback to the driver. That's the only drawback in an otherwise competent chassis.

Midsize SUVs buyers are increasingly driven by styling and features. The Sorento combines those virtues with a very competitive price to present an appealing package.

1954 Hudson Italia : Classic Cars
1954 Hudson Italia : Classic Cars

In 1952, the Hudson Motor Car Company was in the throes of their biggest postwar gamble, the Hudson Jet. Their chief styling designer, Frank Spring, had been given this assignment. Mr. Spring had left Murphy body for Hudson in the 30's and had been instrumental in winning the company the styling award for 1948 with their famous unibody "Step Down" design which contemporary auto makers all have since adopted. Because of financial restraints along with top management's outmoded policies, Mr. Spring's original design for the new Jet was so altered that the final outcome was boxy and homely.

The main competition to Nash's Rambler in the compact market was doomed from the start, eventually leading to Hudson's financial demise in 1954. Mr. Spring was so upset at what had been done to his design that serious consideration was given to his departure from the company. In order to placate him the decision was made to allow him to "play" with a design for an Experimental Sports Car. The company also intended to test public reaction to some rather radical styling concepts that might be used later in the decade.

Frank worked closely with Carlo Felice Bianchi Anderloni, chief designer of Touring Body Works of Milan, Italy. Using the Jet chassis, they had the all-aluminum prototype finished and ready to display at dealerships across the country by late 1953.The public was enthusiastic about the car, and permission was soon given to build a second experimental car on a full sized Hornet chassis. The design was similar, but the proportions never seeme suited to 4 doors and the bigger size. Soon after, Hudson commissioned Touring to build what is believed to have been 50 of the smaller cars, then dubbed the "Super Jet", and sent the needed components over to Italy.

The first run of cars consisted of 10 units. Small changes were made in the first several cars, but by serial # IT 10003 the cars remained consistent and all carried their new name, Hudson Italia.

Bankruptcy and subsequent merger with Nash ended H.M.C.'S commitment to Touring. Any further dealings would have to be made by Touring with the newly formed American Motors. A.M.C. sent letters to all its Hudson dealers announcing that it would take pre-paid orders from customers for the cars remaining in Italy. A deadline was set. Unfortunately, in those days, nobody wanted what was perceived as a loser. When an auto company went broke, their remaining cars depreciated at an alarming rate. Since the Italia was virtually a 1953 Hudson Jet mechanically, and it commanded a price of more than a Cadillac, orders were almost nonexistent by that deadline, and A.M.C. only committed to have another 15 Italias built.

Most of these were sold to the more eccentric customers who lived in the So. Calif. area. Amazingly, of the 26 that were built, 21 have been found to date. It is interesting to note that all but one of the missing 5 are in serial numbers 5 through 10. The two in this group that have surfaced are both in Europe, leading speculation that these 6 cars were never delivered to America. It could have had something to do with Hudson's bankruptcy.

The Italia was truly one of the most uniquely designed American sports cars produced during the '50s, which is no doubt why at least 21 of the 25 have survived

Add slightly more power, make a limited production run and call it a day.

The masters of lightness are at it again. Thanks to our motoring friends from Car and Driver we got word earlier yesterday (Aug. 15, 2015) that Lotus has unveiled its 2016 Lotus 360 Cup. They take a standard Lotus Exige S V6, slap on a free flowing exhaust system, add on a few lightweight pieces and call it a day. But when it comes to something this light (2491 pounds to be exact) that extra 10 HP and bit of lightness goes a long way.

Acura NSX Delayed Till Spring 2016 : News
Acura NSX Delayed Till Spring 2016 : News

Will it still be relevant by then?

If you were drooling over the NSXs that Acura introduced at The Quail earlier today, you'd better prepare for a serious case of cotton mouth as the model has reportedly been delayed until next spring.

While the car was slated to go into production this fall, Acura has reportedly confirmed the first cars won't roll of the line until the spring of 2016 as 2017 model.

Automobile Magazine says Acura is blaming the delay on the company's decision to use a twin-turbo V6 engine instead of a naturally-aspirated V6 like the one used in the 2013 NSX concept. The change meant engineers had to switch to a longitudinal layout which required additional development time.

2016 Volkswagen Amarok Atacama : Current Models
2016 Volkswagen Amarok Atacama : Current Models

VW's Amarok pick-up is already a go-anywhere vehicle, but the Ford Ranger rival is now getting more serious with this 'Atacama' special edition, on sale now for £26,850 (excl. VAT).

Don't get too excited though, as it isn't getting any hardcore off-road weaponry to tackle the South American desert. Instead it adds some style upgrades and piles on extra kit to keep you warm and comfortable wherever you are.

Exterior upgrades include Atacama side decals, black painted rear styling bars, a black rear bumper and 19-inch 'Cantera' alloys. Bi-xenon headlamps and a protective coated loadbed round off the changes. Three colours are available: white, blue and black.

Inside there's leather upholstery, a new multi-function steering wheel, sat-nav, Bluetooth and dual-zone climate control added to the standard Amarok's feature list.

It's only available with the 177bhp 2.0-litre BiTDI diesel engine, equipped with a six-speed manual and selectable four-wheel drive or an eight-speed autobox and permanent four-wheel drive. Around 500 examples are expected to be sold.

1969 Datsun 240z V8 : Classic Cars
1969 Datsun 240z V8 : Classic Cars

The Datsun 240Z was an exceedingly important car for Datsun, the automaker saw the need for a halo-car that would help shift the brand’s image away from just being just another Japanese econobox manufacturer. The team behind the Z took inspiration from two of the most famous sports cars in the world at the time: the Jaguar E-Type and the Porsche 911 – and design cues from both of these cars can be clearly seen in the 240.

Datsun released the car in the United States in 1969 where it became an overnight success, its main competition was the MGB GT, so Datsun executives shrewdly priced the 240Z $200 below the British sports car. Sales were swift and the waiting lists rapidly grew in length, the little Japanese car handled significantly better than almost any comparable American coupe – the only real drawback was the relatively low power output from the original 2.4 litre straight-6.

It didn’t take long for enterprising Americans to begin dropping significantly more powerful engines into the 240Z, effectively creating a small, lightweight coupe that could outpace almost anything else on the road. The most popular engine conversion was the small-block V8 paired with a matching transmission and modified suspension to handle the weight increase over the front end.

This particular V8 Datsun 240Z is fitted with a second generation LT1 V8 from a Chevrolet Corvette C4, paired with a 4-speed automatic transmission and uprated brakes. It has to be said that the car would benefit greatly by having that transmission replaced with a manual 5-speed, this is a matter of personal preference of course but it does seem like a shame to have that glorious V8 upfront mated to a slushbox.

If you like the look of the car and you’d like to add it to your garage I have some good news – it’s currently for sale on eBay out of Beverly Hills (hence the manicured background in the images) with a Buy It Now price of $12,950 USD. I figure if you budget a couple of thousand to switch out the transmission with a stick shift you’ll have a beautiful vintage performer capable of embarrassing a lot of larger, more modern sports cars.

Toyota Forgoes Android Auto AND CarPlay : News
Toyota Forgoes Android Auto AND CarPlay : News

Automakers left, right, and center are hustling to adopt Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, or both into their vehicles. But not Toyota. The Japanese manufacturer's American division is going with a more obscure platform instead.

Just the other day, Toyota announced a new smartphone integration system that it will be installing in its vehicles. The Scout GPS Link system is developed by California-based Telenav and implemented by Washington-based UIEvolution. The system will work with both iOS and Android devices, eschewing the need for either Apple's or Google's in-car interfaces while enabling users to link their smartphone with their vehicle's infotainment system to navigate, make or take phone calls, and listen to music. The feature is being rolled out on the Tacoma pickup, then on other 2016 models equipped with Toyota's Entune Audio Plus system.

The question is whether this will prove an inspired decision on Toyota's part, or a short-sighted one. On the one hand, the Scout GPS Link system could end up alienating younger buyers who increasingly show more interest in smartphones than cars, and more loyalty towards operating systems than automakers. On the other hand, it could conceivably prove better and less distracting than Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. We have trouble imagining that a couple of little-known startups could beat both Apple and Google for smoother device integration and interface, but we'll reserve judgement for when we actually get to sample the system first-hand.

Jakusa Triango : Concept Cars
Jakusa Triango : Concept Cars

Can you spec this machine into life? Like so many other startup manufacturers, Hungarian-based Jakusa Design has been hard at work creating this shell of what should, someday, become an outstanding boutique supercar or hypercar. At the moment, though, the Triango prototype has been released by the company and despite its eye-catching exterior design, it doesn't seem to have much of a soul (or any of those all-important underhood moving parts). The Triango was designed by a Behance artist, and may remain a prototype with no production in sight.

However, before it dusts away in somebody's garage, maybe the Triango still has a chance. Assuming you agree with the designer's decisions – especially regarding that low ride, those long and narrow headlights, ridiculous gullwing doors and the swooping rear window and long boxy decklid – how would you spec this car to become a tried and true supercar or hypercar deserving of its unique shape? Should the company push production, or should this concept be tossed away in the pile of soulless shells that never made it from designer's studio and onto the road?

2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe : Current Models
2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe : Current Models

Mercedes-Benz has disclosed pricing for the new GLE Coupe, and while no bargain, it’s actually less of a shocker than you might have anticipated. Benz’s SUV-coupe-crossover conglomerate comes in two AMG-bred variations only: the GLE450 AMG Coupe, and the much wilder AMG GLE63 S. They are priced at $66,025 and $110,225, respectively. How is that a bargain? Read on, and we’ll explain.

Powered by a 362-hp, twin-turbocharged, 3.0-liter V-6, the GLE450 AMG Coupe is already a muscular machine, one that makes surprisingly lustful noises when pushed hard. But it’s no match for the ultra-fast AMG GLE63 S Coupe, propelled by a 577-hp, twin-turbocharged, 5.5-liter V-8. Both come standard with all-wheel drive.

The entry-level GLE450 AMG Coupe is just $500 more expensive than the regular-body GLE400, which has a less-powerful, 329-hp version of the same engine. And the AMG GLE63 S Coupe commands a modest premium of $2200 (or 2 percent) over its non-coupe sibling.

BMW, by contrast, charges an additional $3400 to $5900 over the equivalent X5 for its similarly coupe-like X6. (2015 X6 prices range from $60,795 for the sDrive35i to $103,195 for the X6 M.) In the marketplace, the GLE Coupe also may be cross-shopped with the more conservative Range Rover Sport and the Tesla Model X—that is, once the Model X finally arrives.

Buyers who are set on a Benz and don’t need the extra trunk space of the regular GLE may well be drawn to the Coupe, since it looks a lot more fresh than the regular GLE, which is little more than a facelifted M-class. And the price premium is fairly minor—at least as far as fancy SUVs go.

1955 Porsche 356 Pre A Speedster : Classic Cars
1955 Porsche 356 Pre A Speedster : Classic Cars

Porsche’s immortal Speedster was born out of the vision of North American importer Max Hoffman, legendary for bringing open-top European sports cars to the burgeoning U.S. market. Based on the early America roadsters bodied by Erich Heuer’s Gläser Karosserie, the Speedster took shape with Hoffman’s realisation that a mid-market gap existed for a no-frills, race-ready convertible. Reutter smoothed over the America’s original bodywork to result in the famous high-waisted bathtub style, which eventually proved to be one of Porsche’s most celebrated designs of all time.

According to a copy of the original Kardex warranty card, this beautifully restored Speedster completed assembly on 14 January 1955, where it was finished in Signal Red paint and equipped with instruments in miles, sealed-beam headlamps, and a tonneau with zipper. Initially distributed to Hoffman’s famed New York City dealership, this Porsche more recently returned to Europe when purchased by the consignor, an enthusiast residing in Italy.

The owner soon commissioned a ground-up restoration that included a complete refurbishment of all mechanical and cosmetic components. The interior was reupholstered with tan cloth seats with red piping, whilst the proper Speedster steering wheel and dashboard were correctly refinished. The suspension and undercarriage were rebuilt and detailed, whilst all brightwork was fastidiously polished. Whilst the body was removed, it was taken down to bare metal prior to being painted in its stunning red finish. It should be noted that whilst this car’s original engine is no longer present, a period-correct 1500 Super engine has been installed, combining optimal authenticity with the 15 horsepower dividend afforded by the larger Solex carburettors.

Accompanied by a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, this wonderfully presented Speedster is sure to attract the fancy of any Zuffenhausen enthusiast. It is eminently suitable for both spirited open-air motoring at vintage events or for presentation at finer regional concours and club meets.

Will All CA Cars Be 0-E By 2030? : News
Will All CA Cars Be 0-E By 2030? : News

Among U.S. states, California is by far the most enthusiastic when it comes to electric cars.

And that's largely due to regulations overseen by the state's Air Resources Board.

But Mary Nichols--the chair of this agency since 2007--isn't satisfied with having just a few electric cars on California roads.

"Nichols really does intend to force automakers to eventually sell nothing but electrics," according to a recent Bloomberg profile (via the Honda Fit EV Owners Facebook group).

In an interview with the news service, the 70-year-old Nichols said that she plans to push regulations that would all but eliminate sales of new cars with internal-combustion engines in California over the next few decades.

California's current zero-emission vehicle mandate requires that 2.7 percent of new cars sold in the state this year produce no greenhouse-gas emissions.

That requirement is set to increase yearly beginning in 2018, reaching 22 percent of new-car sales in 2025.

Nichols reportedly wants to push further, making 100 percent of new vehicles sold produce zero- or almost-zero emissions by 2030.

This represents the groundwork for a goal of taking internal-combustion cars completely off California roads by 2050.

It's assumed that any of the gasoline or diesel vehicles sold right before the hypothetical 2030 cutoff will have ended their useful lives by then.

In her quest for emission-free California roads, Nichols is leading by example.

She drives a Honda Fit EV--one of the "compliance cars" built solely to satisfy the state's zero-emission vehicle mandate, and one that she'll have to give back when her lease expires.

The ambitious plans advanced by Nichols are in sync with those of California Governor Jerry Brown, under whom she has served twice as head of CARB.

In an executive order, Brown set the goal of cutting California greenhouse-gas emissions 80 percent by mid-century, and he's called for a 50-percent cut in transportation pretoleum use by 2030.

Brown named Nichols to the Air Resources Board in 1975, and made her chairwoman in 1979.

When Brown returned to Sacramento in what the piece calls his ongoing second act, Nichols was already in the midst of her second tenure leading the board, having been reinstated by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.

One crucible for the endurance of Nichols' zero-emission car targets will likely come next year, in the so-called "midterm review" of the national CAFE standards that now stretch from model 2012 all the way through 2025.

During that process, carmakers are expected to argue for leniency and delays in both the California regulations and Federal Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards, both of which are set to be reviewed.

Among other reasons, they will cite increasing consumer preference for heavier, thirstier, less aerodynamic SUVs and crossover utility vehicles over sedans and hatchbacks--whose proportional sales have recently fallen to record lows.

A group of smaller carmakers that will have to start selling zero-emission vehicles in California in 2018 has already lobbied for the rules to allow them to comply using only plug-in hybrids, without any true zero-emission vehicles.

Nichols noted that some compromise may be possible, but also claimed stricter standards will ultimately benefit the auto industry in California.

She said carmakers view the Air Resources Board as the driving force behind certain technologies--and that's causing companies to concentrate more engineering and design resources in the state.

That could very well be a side benefit to California's relentless focus on cleaner cars.

And it will allow California to continue to be a model for the rest of the world--including several giant Chinese cities--in taking aggressive action to reduce and ultimately eliminate vehicle emissions.

2020 Tesla Roadster : Concept Cars
2020 Tesla Roadster : Concept Cars

Tesla Motors has quietly revealed that its long-awaited second-generation Roadster will be introduced in 2019.

What the upcoming Roadster — assuming that’s what it’s called — will be powered by is up in the air, but Tesla has hinted that it will be even quicker than the top-of-the-line Model S that was announced just a few days ago.

“There is of course one speed faster than ludicrous, but that is reserved for the next-generation Roadster in four years: maximum plaid,” explained the automaker in a press release.

In Ludicrous Mode, the Model S can reach 60 mph from a stop in just 2.8 seconds, a figure that makes it the fastest regular-production four-door sedan on the planet. If Tesla keeps its ambitious promise, the next Roadster will be able to sprint from zero to 60 mph faster than the 903-horsepower McLaren P1.

Driving range will be another of the convertible’s strong points. The 3.0 update that was introduced last December increased the original Roadster’s range to 400 miles in the right conditions, and the upcoming model is widely expected to beat that figure.

Although the original Roadster was built on a platform borrowed from Lotus, Tesla CEO Elon Musk has all but confirmed its successor will be designed and built entirely in-house. Some sources claim that it will borrow quite a few bits and pieces from the upcoming Model 3 but the California-based car maker has opted not to comment on the matter.

What’s all but certain is that the convertible will not use any components stamped with a Lotus part number.

“[When we designed the Roadster] we ended up changing most of the damn car so we thought later, why did we do that?” revealed the executive in an earlier interview.

Tesla will likely provide additional insight into what we can expect from its upcoming Roadster over the next few months. Until then, the company is busily working on bringing the Model X to the market and putting the final touches on the 3 Series-sized Model 3.

2015 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 : Current Models
2015 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 : Current Models

The potent ZL1 is the high-performance variant of the reborn, retro-flavored Camaro. Also available in summer-friendly convertible form, the coupe combines aggressive looks and a 580 horsepower supercharged V8 with surprisingly good handling dynamics and ride quality thanks to GM's trick Magnetic Ride Control system.

Overview

The ZL1 packs a more powerful version of the supercharged 6.2-liter LSA V8 that was introduced in the Cadillac CTS-V. In the Camaro, the motor is good for 580 horsepower and 556 lb-ft of torque, beating out the classic 1969 ZL1's 427 cubic inch V8 by more than 150 horsepower. Helping make those impressive power figures is a 1.9-liter Roots-style supercharger that crams air into the engine with a pair of four-lobe rotors and the aid of an intercooler.

Chevrolet modified the LSA engine specifically for the ZL1, with upgrades including a less restrictive air filter, dual inlet paths and improved airflow throughout the supercharger housing. Other changes include a more efficient intercooler and electric power steering system.

Specially engineered transmissions were necessary to the stress of all that power. Chevy beefed up its Tremec TR-6060 six-speed manual to MG9-spec for ZL1 duty, which means the transmission can handle 30 percent more torque. This is achieved through the use of a strengthened output shaft, high-strength rear housing and additional roller bearing.

One unique feature of the ZL1 among high-performance muscle cars is the availability of an automatic transmission. While the notion of adding an automatic transmission may make some enthusiasts cringe, the reality is some consumers with pockets deep enough to purchase this car may very well prefer a six-speed automatic transmission over a do-it-yourself box.

The clutch-less option is a Hydra-Matic 6L90 six-speed automatic transmission, which benefits from two additional pinion gears, an additional clutch plate and strengthened output shaft and gearset. There are also three drive modes: Drive, Sport and Manual, depending on the driver's preference at the time.

"Drive" is calibrated for optimal fuel economy, which even includes second-gear starts, along with smoother shifting points for comfort. This is for drivers simply looking to get from point A to point B without earning themselves a ticket or squandering $60 worth of premium fuel.

"Sport" is, as expected, a sport-minded setup that makes use of faster, tighter shift points and a tendency to hold gears longer for optimal power. The final mode, "Manual," takes away any automatic upshifts, adds staged upshifts when demanded and puts all focus on performance at the cost of comfort and economy. This is the mode for those lucky and bold enough to enjoy their ZL1 on the track.

Outside, the ZL1 boasts an aggressive body kit along with a unique "mohawk-style" hood, which features a functional air extractor and is made of a carbon fiber composite. The cabin is dressed up with a sueded microfiber-accented instrument panel and an available (and highly recommended) sueded microfiber wrap on the special flat-bottom steering wheel and shifter. The visibility problems of the standard Camaro, created by thick pillars and a high beltline, regrettably remain in the ZL1. Thankfully, a backup camera is available.

New to the ZL1 is a standard MyLink infotainment system, which offers voice control of certain entertainment functions and includes Bluetooth smartphone connectivity and streaming audio via Pandora radio and Stitcher SmartRadio. MyLink comes with a color touchscreen and can be outfitted with navigation.

Magnetic Ride Control

The trick to the ZL1's excellent ride/handling compromise is GM's third-generation Magnetic Ride Control system. This technology uses valve-less damping and Magneto-Rheological fluid technology in its shock absorbers to control resistance. Essentially, the system can magnetize particles to change the flow resistance on the fly and adjust the ride from hard to soft, or soft to hard - mitigating body roll during hard cornering and keeping the ride comfortable while cruising.

The third-gen system uses new twin-wire/dual-coil dampers at all four corners, rather than a single, larger single-core on the outgoing generation. The new system allows for even more precise control and a wider range of comfort levels, allowing up to 1,000 adjustments per second.

The MRC system has three preset settings: Tour, Sport and Track.

Performance Traction Management system

The final trick up the ZL1's sleeve comes in the form of a performance traction management system intended to used on the track or at drag strips. PTM is standard equipment, having been born in the Corvette ZR1.

PTM works by integrating magnetic ride control, launch control, traction control and electronic stability control to work together optimally depending on the environment and task at hand.

There are five pre-set modes:
Mode 1 - Traction control set for wet conditions, with stability control on and Magnetic Ride Control set on Tour.
Mode 2 - Traction control set for dry conditions, with stability control on and Magnetic Ride Control set on Tour.
Mode 3 - Traction control set on Sport 1, with stability control on and Magnetic Ride Control set on Sport.
Mode 4 - Traction control set on Sport 2, with stability control off and Magnetic Ride Control set on Sport.
Mode 5 - Traction control set on Race, with stability control off and Magnetic Ride Control set on Track. Launch control tuned for VHT-prepped drag strips. This means the ZL1 can be set to work according to the driver's preference for just about any situation encountered on the road, track or on the strip.

Standard and Optional Features

Standard features include heated leather seats with microfiber suede inserts with six-sway power adjustability, leather wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, unique alloy pedal covers, ZL1 door sill plates, Boston Acoustics-provided premium audio, complete with nine speakers, four auxiliary gauges including boost, rear park assist, rear camera display in the mirror and more.

Options include a power sunroof, stripe package, exposed carbon fiber hood insert, interior suede microfiber package (covers steering wheel, shift knob and shift boot), the previously mentioned automatic transmission and forged aluminum wheels.

Key Competitors

The Camaro ZL1 faces competition from the Ford Shelby GT500 and the Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat.

Other cars that offer the firepower and handling comparable to that of the Camaro ZL1 are far pricier performance machines like the Nissan GT-R and the Porsche 911 Carrera S. Chevrolet's own Corvette could also be seen as a competitor.

1963 Shelby Cobra Dragonsnake : Classic Cars
1963 Shelby Cobra Dragonsnake : Classic Cars

Shelby offered the Dragonsnake as a ¼-mile drag car that came equipped with several distinct racing options. Around $8,000 USD, this option was not cheap and only 8 cars came ordered with the drag pack.

Included was a competition-spec engine, modified Koni shock absorbers, Goodyear Drag Slicks, 4.54:1 rear end, air scoop on the hood, relocated battery behind the passenger seat, heavy-duty half shafts and an NHRA-approved roll bar.

The engine was completed to a very thorough specification. “Every clearance and dimension has been checked and set to minimum specification. Clearances of all bearings in the lower end of the engine have been set for high rpm. All moving parts of the engine assembly have been balanced, including the cam followers, the push rods, the rocker arms, the valves, and spring retaining washers.”

“The cylinder heads are cast aluminum and have lightened competition valves installed. The ports and combustion chambers are not polished to comply with N.H.R.A. rules for Stock Sports class. The cam can be either advanced or retarded to customer specification.”

“The rear and front spring assemblies are modified slightly to create better ground contact on the rear springs and better lift characteristics on the front springs. A hood scoop is also fitted to ensure cool, efficient air intake to the carburetors.”

Shelby offered the car with three levels of carburation. Stage I was a single 4-barrel carburettor while the $688 Stage II option included two units. Only one car, CSX2427, was original ordered with the Stage III Weber carburetor setup which was fitted later to most of the cars.

In total only eight Dragonsnakes were produced by Shelby including CSX3198 which was the only 427-equipped model. Our feature car, CSX2093, is the winningest competition Cobra in drag history and won 7 NHRA National events with Bruce Larson or Ed Hedrick driving. It was offered by Mecum at their Kissimmee, FL Auction on January 26-30, 2011.

Mazda Koeru : Concept Cars
Mazda Koeru : Concept Cars

The Frankfurt Motor Show will host the world debut of the Mazda Koeru, a new crossover SUV concept.

Taking its name from Japanese, Koeru means “exceed” or “go beyond,” which Mazda believes is a fitting name for its latest venture in the growing crossover SUV market. The automaker didn’t mention any production plans, but said it is “looking to surpass existing standards and raise the bar for performance, efficiency and overall value” with the Koeru.

The first sketch of the study reveals the familiar KODO – Soul of Motion design language, emphasized by the grille, sleek headlights and flowing wheel arches. Mazda says the Koeru “expresses the power and vitality of a predator along with a unique level of refined dignity.”

Judging from the dynamic silhouette of the concept, the low roofline and the similar front end to the CX-3 small SUV, it may preview a sportier version of the latter model which could be called CX-4. Expect more details as we get closer to the model’s debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show (September 17-27).

BMW's Futuristic EnLighten App : News
BMW's Futuristic EnLighten App : News

If you live in a city long enough, you get to understand its traffic lights. Some places, they're synchronized, so when your light turns green, you know how fast you can drive and hit the next one without slowing down. When it works right, it's a thing of beauty.

BMW has now made the light-timing process a whole lot easier, courtesy of its EnLighten app.

EnLighten allows BMW owners to know for sure when the next light will turn red, and it offers advice on how heavy (or light) to hit the pedal. One glance at the car's display screen will show the current color of the upcoming light and a countdown to its next change. It will also -- and this is the really nice part -- advise the driver whether to prepare for stopping or not, based on her car's current position and speed.

To help keep drivers' eyes on the road, the app offers audio alerts that signal pending changes. And if there's a dedicated turning lane at the next intersection and a driver has her turn signal on, EnLighten will give data for the turning light rather than the main one.

Of course, there are a couple of caveats. For starters, EnLighten is only available on iOS, so to use it in your car, you'll need to have an iPhone. (Sorry, Android fans.) You'll also need to be driving a BMW that's equipped with the BMW Apps option.

Far more limiting is the fact that you'll also need to be traveling in a city that hosts an integrated network of smart traffic signals. At the moment, there are exactly three cities in America: Portland and Eugene, Oregon, and Salt Lake City, Utah. BMW says that more cities will follow, though since that's dependent on municipal spending, it probably won't happen tomorrow.

That said, the concept seems like a great one, and thanks to the growing Internet of Things, it's probably just a matter of time until most major cities get with the program. As they do, we expect to see more apps like this, available to users on a broad range of vehicles.

EnLighten is part of the first wave of the vehicle-to-grid (V2G) revolution. Hopefully, it'll help save drivers some fuel (by avoiding unnecessary acceleration) and frustration (by sitting at red lights). We like the sound of that -- so long as people don't use apps like these as an excuse to gun for green lights, putting other motorists and pedestrians in danger.

2015 Audi S8 Plus : Current Models
2015 Audi S8 Plus : Current Models

The performance of the Audi S8 not enough for you? The Ingolstadt-based automaker is introducing an even more powerful version unimaginatively dubbed S8 Plus.

The stock Audi S8 already produces 520 hp and 481 lb-ft of torque courtesy of its 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8, with power sent to all four wheels via Quattro all-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission; it's not exactly lacking. The S8 Plus, on the other hand, dials the output up to 605 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque which Audi says is enough to send this mobile office to 60 mph in just 3.8 seconds.

Setting aside for the moment the question of why Audi has created a more powerful S8, let's first talk about how they did this. The extra 85 horsepower and 72 lb-ft of torque comes from modified turbocharger geometry, different exhaust valves and tweaked engine management. Audi says that in overboost mode, the S8 can turn the torque up to 553 lb-ft in a short burst, when the driver needs to overtake bad guys driving a Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG.

A few discreet details will tip off Q-ship fans that this is not merely some run of the mill S8: a matte black grille insert, 21-inch wheels, a revised diffuser with carbon fiber elements, carbon fiber inlets on the fenders and quad exhaust tips with gloss-black accents.

Did Audi create this car in anticipation of the sequel to the 1998 John Frankenheimer verite classic "Ronin"? We think the Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG has more to do with the S8 Plus' existence than a classic film (that desperately needs a worthy sequel). The S63 AMG pumps out 577 hp and 664 lb-ft of torque from its 5.5-liter twin-turbocharged V8.

Why are we seeing this model now? Those paying attention to Audi product cycles will no doubt recall that the current S8 has been in production since 2010, which is so many iPhones ago that we've lost track. The A8/S8 duo is due for a redesign soon, so this is likely a placeholder model that squeezes out a little more power to keep the uber-sedan competitive for a couple more years.

Audi is mum for now on whether North America will receive this version of the S8.

1954 Ferrari 750 Monza : Classic Cars
1954 Ferrari 750 Monza : Classic Cars

Perhaps the biggest factor in Ferrari’s early success was his practice of designing and building engines that could be adapted to various applications across the spectrum of Grand Prix, sports racing and roadgoing grand touring cars. It was this principle that led Ferrari in 1951 to experiment with Aurielio Lampredi’s inline 4-cylinder engine, originally designed for the 2-liter Formula 2 and the coming change to the 2.5 liter Formula 1 scheduled for 1954.

In winter 1953/54 Lampredi began developing a new 4-cylinder engine derived from the Tipo 555 Grand Prix car for what would become the new Monza 750 sports racer. Like most of Lampredi’s designs, the new unit used cast alloy for the cylinder head and block assembly, sump and crankcase, and iron cylinder liners screwed into the block to minimize compression loss. The new engine displaced 3 liters and used a wide-angle dual overhead cam arrangement, twin Weber 58mm sidedraft carburetors and 8.6:1 compression to produce 260 HP at 6,000 RPM. A 5-speed transaxle was integrated with the differential.

Approximately 30 750 Monzas were produced, all using Scaglietti coachwork designed by Ferrari’s son Dino. The Monza 750 was built on a conventional oval steel tube chassis with fully independent A-arm suspension up front and a DeDion rear axle with radius rods; oversized drum brakes were used at all four corners. Graced with strong torque and brute power, the car won its first time out at the Monza 'Gran Premio Supercortemaggiore' race driven by Froilan Gonzalez and Maurice Trintignant, that first victory prompting the car’s name.

The second Ferrari 750 Monza built, 0462M was purchased by Joe Kelly of Dublin, who co-drove the car in the September 11 Tourist Trophy race at Dundrod with Desmond Titterington, where it retired with gearbox trouble. Victory followed a week later at Leinster with Titterington again at the wheel, followed by a DNF at Goodwood by future World Champion Mike Hawthorn. Kelly then sold the car to the Jaguar Car Company, where it was back-engineered to determine why it was so competitive against the Jaguar D-Type sports racer. It was then purchased by Jaguar team driver and 1951 Le Mans winner Peter Whitehead. In 1955 ace Formula 1 driver Jack Brabham imported the car to Australia, where it was raced until 1959.

By turns part of the Engelbert Stieger, Brando Wang, Walter Burani and Roberto Crippa collections, 0462M has been campaigned extensively for many years at the Historic Grand Prix of Monaco, the Ferrari Maserati Historic Challenge, the Monterey Historic Races and the Mille Miglia rally.

Bearing chassis number Tipo 501, 0462M is currently equipped with a 3.0 L 4-cylinder racing engine and gearbox, maintained for years by GTO Engineering in the UK. The original numbers matching engine and a rebuilt spare gearbox will accompany the car at auction. It has a charming patina that serves as testament to its extensive racing career. It is always welcome at prestigious events around the world and remains very competitive in its vintage class.
