Shenanigans With Jet Engines : Videos

Remember the old urban legend about a guy who attached a JATO bottle to a car? That myth came from a time when miniaturized jet/rocket technology was still in its infancy, but it didn't stop people from telling and retelling that story no matter how implausible it seemed from a technical and financial standpoint.

Technology has since caught up with urban legend, as proven almost every week by the TV show "Mythbusters," but good outcomes remain elusive when jet engines are attached to small vehicles.

Submitted for your approval: a Mini Cooper with a small and very functional jet engine bolted to the interior of the cargo compartment, attempting a run at the Snetterton raceway in Norfolk, England.

The jet engine itself is a Rolls-Royce Viper 203 sourced from an Avro Shackleton bomber, good for 2,800 pounds of thrust. The fuel economy is a bit on the bad side: almost 16 gallons a minute.

Aaaaaaand it smashes into a wall.
