2016 Toyota Tacoma : Current Models

The all-new 2016 Toyota Tacoma is being revealed for all Canadians to enjoy at the Edmonton Motor Show (April 9-12, 2015 at the Edmonton Expo Centre). Compact pickup truck enthusiasts will see a desert racing-inspired 2016 Toyota Tacoma that has been rebuilt inside and out with an all-new powertrain and enhanced suspension tuning.

“Adventurous Canadians have always enjoyed pushing Toyota trucks to the limits,” says Larry Hutchinson, vice-president of Toyota Canada Inc. “Designed, developed, and assembled in North America, the all-new 2016 Tacoma is a tough truck that rewards spirited truck enthusiasts on and off-road.”

Toyota’s decision to reveal the 2016 Tacoma in Edmonton is the company’s way of thanking western Canadians for helping to make Tacoma the best-selling compact pickup in the country. This success lies in Toyota’s commitment to QDR – quality, durability and reliability – and why the Toyota Tacoma has won the Canadian Black Book Best Retained Value Award (small pickup) for six consecutive years. Clearly, Toyota knows trucks.

QDR is also why Toyota trucks have won numerous off-road victories, and sold over seven million trucks in North America since 1964. This is what happens when you combine Toyota’s seriously rugged design with legendary engineering smarts.

To make the 2016 Tacoma worthy of its “all-new” description, Toyota has made numerous innovative changes to this model. A case in point: The 2016 Toyota Tacoma is stronger than ever, thanks to the use of ultra-high-strength steel in this truck’s body shell. At the same time, Toyota has developed a new hot-stamping process that reduces the shell’s weight, resulting in improved fuel efficiency.

The 2016 Tacoma now comes with two engine options. Truck diehards can get the Tacoma with the all-new, segment-first 3.5-litre Atkinson cycle V6 equipped with Toyota’s D-4S technology. The V6 features both direct and port fuel injection. Tacoma fans can also select Toyota`s popular 2.7-litre four-cylinder engine for added fuel economy.

No matter which engine is chosen, every 2016 Toyota Tacoma can be equipped with a new six-speed automatic transmission with electronic shift that delivers quick and easy shifting. (The V6 can also be mated to a new six-speed manual transmission.) This new powertrain makes the Tacoma more powerful and fuel efficient than ever before.

The 2016 Tacoma’s suspension has been fine-tuned to deliver smooth on-road driving and ‘Throw it at me, I can take it!’ off-road handling. To further enhance this capability, CALTY designers in Newport Beach, Calif., and Ann Arbor, Mich., have modified the 2016 Tacoma’s wheel flares to make room for greater wheel travel. Tacoma drivers can now choose between four new wheel designs ranging from 16 to 17 inches in height.

Where styling is concerned, the 2016 Toyota Tacoma’s front end is aggressive and bold thanks to its taller, more muscular hood and hex upper grille. At the back end, the Tacoma’s new locking tailgate features an integrated spoiler for improved aerodynamics plus a stamped Tacoma logo. The tailgate now comes with an easy lowering feature. It retracts slowly, and never slams down. As well, for the first time, Tacoma is available with a lockable tri-fold hard tonneau cover to keep what’s in the pickup bed -safe and secure.

Inside, the all-new Toyota Tacoma conveys an athletic “go anywhere” feel. This is delivered by the instrument panel’s handlebar design theme that provides a more driver-focused experience.

The 2016 Tacoma’s soft-wrapped trim and metallic accents provide a high-quality frame for an array of available premium features. These include Qi wireless charging, smart key with push-button start, leather-trimmed seats, power moonroof, dual-zone automatic climate control, enhanced touchscreen audio, and a blind-spot monitor with rear cross traffic alert. All of this is offered in a truck interior that has been engineered to be quieter than ever before.

Exterior style and interior luxury notwithstanding, the 2016 Toyota Tacoma is all about performance. This is why this all-new compact pickup will be available in both 4×2 and 4×4 configurations across different grades, each of which will have its own personality and unique look. These grades include the SR5, the high-performance athletic TRD Sport, the tough-as-nails TRD Off-Road and the top-of-the-line Limited for the ultimate in styling and power.

Tacoma’s two TRD grades are inspired by Toyota Racing Development’s 35-year-plus history in desert off-road racing. Toyota’s TRD vehicles have teamed with off-road enthusiasts to conquer the toughest terrains in the world’s most remote locations. All five grades of 2016 Tacomas will make it possible to share these adventures with the world, as every Tacoma will come standard with a GoPro camera mount located near the rear-view mirror.

For truck fans all of all kinds, the 2016 Toyota Tacoma’s Canadian debut promises to be the highlight of this year’s Edmonton Motor Show; a stunning moment when brains and brawn are combined into one powerful yet affordable pickup package.
