1967 Maserati Ghibli : Classic Cars
1967 Maserati Ghibli : Classic Cars

The Maserati Ghibli was an Italian gran turismo produced from 1967 to 1973. With its long, sleek Giugiaro-styled steel body and aggressive posture, the car debuted at the Turin Motor Show in 1966 to much fanfare.

Ghiblis share their underpinnings and mechanicals with the Mexico 2+2 coupe and Quattroporte sedan, and power came from a dry-sump, twin-cam 4.7-liter V-8. The engine breathed through four twin-choke Weber carburetors, produced 310 horsepower and 341 ft-lb of torque, and was mated either to a ZF five-speed manual or three-speed automatic transmission. Top speed was rated at 154 mph, with 60 mph coming in just under seven seconds.

The Ghibli benefitted from four-wheel disc brakes, with double wishbone suspension, coil springs and an anti-roll bar up front, and leaf springs and an anti-roll bar in the back. Twin 13-gallon fuel tanks fed the thirsty V-8. With a curb weight of 3,637 pounds, it was no lightweight, but no one ever seemed to lament a lack of performance.

As if the standard Ghibli weren't enough, in 1969 Maserati unveiled the Ghibli SS, which carried the same powerplant, but enlarged to 4.9 liters. Horsepower was bumped up accordingly, to 335, and the SS topped out at 175 mph, making the car the fastest production Maserati. SS Ghiblis came fully loaded, with niceties such as leather seating, tinted power windows, a heated rear window, air conditioning, and more.

Also available in 1969 was the Ghibli Spyder and SS Spyder. Mechanically, each was identical to the coupe on which it was based, but while the hard top car was a 2+2, the Spyders were strictly two-seaters. A factory hard top was available, though only a handful were ordered so equipped.

In 1970, minor changes appeared on the Ghibli, with revisions made to the headlights, dash, and headrests.

In 1973, the Ghibli's final year of production, only SS variants were offered. When the model gave way to its Khamsin successor, a total of 1,170 coupes had been built, and only 125 Spyders—25 of which were SS models.

While the Maserati Ghibli may have lacked the V-12 cachet of its Ferrari Daytona rivals, the gorgeous gran turismos never lacked for power, sophistication, or admirers. The same can be said today.

GM Ignition-Switch Death Toll Hits 100s : News
GM Ignition-Switch Death Toll Hits 100s : News

General Motors said Monday that at least 100 people have died as a result of defective ignition switches in some of its older model cars.

GM's independent compensation fund, run by attorney Kenneth Feinberg, said in its weekly update that compensation claims for 37 deaths and 537 cases of injuries remained under review.

The defective switches can cause the ignition to unintentionally switch out of the "on" position, disabling airbags and other functions. GM knew of the ignition problem for more than a decade before it began recalling 2.6 million cars worldwide in February 2014.

The largest US automaker had acknowledged at least 13 deaths were linked to the ignition-switch flaw by the time its recall started.

The compensation fund said it had received 4,342 compensation claims for fatalities and injuries linked to the faulty equipment from the opening of claims processing on August 1, 2014, to the January 31 filing deadline.

On Monday, the compensation fund said there were at least 12 confirmed cases of crippling injuries, such as brain damage or double amputation, as a result of ignition-related crashes, the same number as a week ago. Fifty-two claims in that category were under review.

The number of eligible claims for hospitalization or outpatient medical treatment rose by five to 172. The fund is evaluating 537 of those types of claims.

GM will pay a minimum $1 million in death compensation, $300,000 for the surviving spouse and another $300,000 for each surviving dependent.

Financial and medical treatment compensation of at least $20,000 will also be offered to those with eligible physical injury claims from an accident.

Claimants must waive any rights to litigation related to the ignition-switch defect to receive a payment.

GM, the world's third-largest automaker after Japan's Toyota and Germany's Volkswagen, has earmarked $400 million for the claims.

GM faces a number of investigations over the long-delayed recall, including by the Justice Department, Congress and the Securities and Exchange Commission, as well as numerous lawsuits.

In mid-April, a US bankruptcy judge ruled that General Motors's 2009 government-engineered bankruptcy reorganization shields it from lawsuits seeking to hold post-bankruptcy GM liable for certain ignition-related loss claims dating to before the bankruptcy.

1964 Pontiac Banshee : Concept Cars
1964 Pontiac Banshee : Concept Cars

Called Project XP-833, this concept was built by John DeLorean but never reached production. It was meant as a middle-model in-between Chevrolet's Corvette and Camaro. Like the Corvette it had a 2-seat fiberglass body, but was powered by a unique six-cylinder engine. Unfortunately, the bosses at GM thought the model was too similar to the Corvette and canceled production plans.

At their Scottsdale Auction, Barrett-Jackson offered the only Banshee Coupe experimental car. Below is the excerpt available from their catalogue:

''A vehicle design that challenged the limits of American engineering and thinking. John DeLorean's vision for a Pontiac 2-seat sports car, with long sweeping hood and short rear deck styling, screamed speed. This all original Grey hardtop, with Red interior, and Pontiac Overhead Cam six cylinder engine weighed in at only 2200 pounds and utilized a unique solid-body construction of exterior fiberglass and steel underbody. The Banshee had all the elements of an awesome performer. General Motors executives viewed the concept to be too much of a threat to the Corvette and as a result instructed DeLorean to cease additional development. Only two runable prototypes were built. The car's influence on future GM products spanned decades, with some of the styling cues seen on vehicles such as the 1968 Corvette. As part of automotive history, this specific Banshee was invited to be displayed at the 2001 Meadow Brook Hall Concours d'Elegance.''

Again the car was offered at RM's 2010 Amelia Island sale with an estimate of $400,000-$600,000 USD. Below is an excerpt of the description:

In the early 60s, still handily out-selling Buick and Oldsmobile, Pontiac’s leadership clamored for a sporty car to anchor its image. The Banshee concept, designated GM Project XP-833, was conceived in the nimble mind of John DeLorean with backing from Pete Estes. Positioned within GM as a response to Ford’s pioneering Mustang, it exploited a two-seat niche not met by Ford’s pony car. It fit neatly into GM’s sporty car hierarchy between Chevy’s Corvette and the coming Camaro.

Banshee was based on the mid-sized corporate A-body coil spring, live rear axle suspension that underpinned the redesigned 1964 Chevelle and LeMans. DeLorean gave it a 90-inch wheelbase steel platform chassis rather than the heavy A-body perimeter frame and clothed the convertible and coupe concepts with a dramatic fiberglass body conceived by PMD designer Jack Humbert under Chuck Jordan’s corporate design leadership.

While concept cars frequently hint at what stylists are thinking, Project XP-833 was an unprecedented preview of future GM designs. Its long nose, short deck layout, swooping “coke-bottle” profile, broad grille with chrome bumper surround, steeply raked windshield, fastback roof terminating in a hint of a spoiler, bulging fenders and triple slit taillights in a raked cut off rear fascia foretold the lines of the third generation Corvette and future Pontiac identity cues. So did the hidden headlights and the suggestive power bulge on the hood.

Under the coupe’s hood lay one of Pontiac’s most imaginative engines. Based on the re-designed Chevrolet block, DeLorean’s engineers came up with the single overhead camshaft cross-flow cylinder head to give their six better performance and a cool performance image. The high performance head was made practical by one of the first applications of a fiberglass-reinforced toothed timing belt to drive the camshaft. While it was offered in 215 hp “Sprint” tune with a four-barrel carburetor and high performance camshaft, in an attempt to assuage corporate’s fears, the engine in the Banshee coupe prototype was the base 155 hp version with a single-barrel carb driving through a four-speed manual transmission to the live rear axle.

Other innovative ideas incorporated in the Banshee included cooling air intakes under the long nose and fixed seats with movable pedals. Finished in silver to show the dramatic body lines to advantage, it was upholstered in bright red and was fitted with Rally II styled wheels. Estes and DeLorean had two complete, running prototypes built, the coupe offered here and a convertible finished in white.

Although both the Banshee concepts survived, the project did not, killed by GM’s committee management and adamant opposition from Chevrolet which vigorously defended its position as GM’s purveyor of high performance sports cars.

Carefully preserved for nearly a half century, the prototype Pontiac Banshee coupe has survived essentially as it was last shown to GM management and driven by Pontiac executives. It was an invited participant among the prestigious classics and important concept cars at the Meadow Brook Concours d’Elegance in 2001. Its odometer shows barely 1,500 miles from new, and its condition is original throughout. Its original paint has been protected and preserved with clear coat. The convertible counterpart survives in an important long term collection of show and concept cars.

2015 Mercedes-Benz GLA : Current Models
2015 Mercedes-Benz GLA : Current Models

Sometimes, it pays to wait. Mercedes-Benz could have jumped into the compact-SUV genre when competitors like the BMW X1 hit the market, but their patience produced the sleekly styled 2015 GLA-Class, which expands upon the sub-$30,000 Mercedes-Benz CLA's underpinnings and shares engines with that strong-selling sedan. Unlike the BMW X1, Range Rover Evoque, or Audi's soon-to-be released Q3, the all-new 2015 Mercedes GLA250 and its feral sibling, the GLA45 AMG, are slung low to the ground and more closely resemble bulbous wagons than high-riding SUVs. The result is an affordable, smallish SUV that's dialed in to appeal to driving enthusiasts, not just traditional sport ute fans – which gives this affordable hatchback huge potential for success.

You'll Like This Car If...
Crave practicality and need four doors, but can't commit to a full-blown SUV? Slip into a GLA250. Feeling more extroverted about your driving? You will find satisfaction from the GLA45 AMG's more robust performance capabilities.

You May Not Like This Car If...
If you're looking for a bigger, more imposing SUV that towers over traffic and drives large, head towards the Mercedes M-Class or GL. The new GLA is all about providing just enough size (and in the case of the AMG version, more than enough performance) – which is not necessarily for everybody.

What's New for 2015
The 2015 Mercedes GLA is similar in size to the global A-Class vehicle, but is an all-new body style wrapped around the Mercedes-Benz CLA's chassis and engine configurations, which uses a front-drive or all-wheel-drive platform.

Jaguar E-Type Series 1 : Classic Cars
Jaguar E-Type Series 1 : Classic Cars

The first Jaguar E-Type has since become known as the Series 1, to distinguish it from the latter Series 2 and Series 3. Of course, as is almost always the case, the purists prefer the earlier iterations of the model – so E-Types like the 1964 example you see here are always in high demand.

It’s probably fair to say that the E-Type Jaguar is widely regarded as the most beautiful car ever made, Enzo Ferrari said as much when he first saw it, and it’s a sentiment that has been reflected in innumerable “Most Beautiful Cars” lists compiled from the ’60s to the present day.

Much of the credit for the design rests on the shoulders of Malcolm Sayer, a former aircraft designer who had worked at the Bristol Aeroplane Company during WWII. Sayer was hired by Jaguar in 1951 – and it would go on to be one of the single most important hires in the history of the company. He would work for Jaguar for 20 years and pioneer both designs and methodologies that would become fundamental tenants of the automobile design process for decades to come – including the use of slide rules and 7-figure log tables to work out formulae he had personally invented for creating curves – a task now undertaken by exceedingly complex CAD software.

With the E-Type, Sayer wanted to bring Jaguar forward in one giant leap. It was longer, sleeker and more aerodynamic than any previous design which led to it having an independently verified top speed of 153+mph – a genuinely obscene speed for the early 1960s.

The first E-Types were powered by the tried and tested Jaguar XK6 engine, with three Weber carburettors, a 3.8 litre capacity and 265bhp. Power was fed to the rear wheels via a four-speed manual transmission (the three-speed automatic didn’t appear till 1966), suspension was independent all round, and Jaguar took the unusual step of installing disc brakes on all four corners (though the rear brakes were inboard).

When it was introduced in 1961 the E-Type created a global sensation. It was far cheaper than comparable cars from Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz and Aston Martin, and many considered it more beautiful to boot. It was initially an export only model, until July 1961, and sold exceedingly well on both sides of the pond. By the time production of the model ceased in 1975 Jaguar had built over 70,000 units, and over the past 15 or so years the demand for them has gone stratospheric.

Android Auto : Accessories
Android Auto : Accessories

As the rumors foretold, today at Google I/O we got a first look at Android Auto. The system uses your Android smartphone as the brain for an in-dash system controlling navigation, music, and messaging. In other words, your next new car might double as an Android accessory.

Android Auto
Basically, Android Auto is a casting setup, where your phone's apps and features are seen and controlled through your dashboard touchscreen. It brings your full music collection to your car, and pops big, simple buttons on the dashboard touchscreen to control Google Maps. And most importantly, it's voice activated, allowing you to search for step-by-step Maps navigation without taking your hands off the wheel.

Additionally, your smartphone-powered dashboard will read you text messages that you receive on-the-go, and allow you to dictate and send responses. Which, assumedly, is a lot safer than fumbling with your phone in your lap.

Android Auto is the payoff of the search giant's Open Automotive Alliance, a joint effort with 28 carmakers and mobile tech supplier Nvidia. Announced in January, the Open Automotive Alliance's stated mission is "accelerating auto innovation with an approach that offers openness, customization and scale." In non-magicspeak, that means enabling in-car electronics to communicate with Android devices, and giving drivers built-in controls to safely operate the devices without undue distraction.

These features will come to Android when the yet-unnamed "L" operating system, meaning later this year. Google says the first new cars that support Android Auto will be hitting showrooms later this year.

Google's not the first to push its products onto the dashboard: Apple's CarPlay, announced in March and demonstrated at the Geneva Motor Show, uses the same tactic, harnessing the driver's smartphone to power the in-car entertainment and dashboard display. Automakers including Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, Nissan, Jaguar/Land Rover, BMW, and General Motors have promised to support Apple's CarPlay—some of which overlap with Android's 28 partner carmakers in the Open Automotive Alliance.

Bentley EXP 10 Speed 6 Decision Due Soon : News
Bentley EXP 10 Speed 6 Decision Due Soon : News

One of our highlights of the Geneva and Shanghai Motor Shows, the Bentley EXP 10 Speed 6, might receive a green light for production shortly as customer and dealer clinics are underway around the world to gather valuable feedback. In our recent interview with Bentley’s board member Rolf Frech we could read between the lines that the EXP 10 Speed 6 is holding excellent cards to receive production approval.

But before the Bentley EXP 10 Speed 6 Concept finds its way into the production line, Bentley’s engineers and board members have to answer some questions like what platform to use. A few options are available within the Volkswagen Group including Bentley’s own new platform of the next—gen Continental GT. One of the foreseen drive-trains includes the new VW Group plug-in hybrid, V8 and even V6 petrol engines.

One major dilemma is the trade-off between luxury and weight. What does Bentley mean with luxury and will Bentley customers accept a barebone carbon fiber interior or are established brand values like fine leather and woodwork a must? Those are questions currently asked at Bentley HQ.

We truly love the interior shown in the concept car and according to Mr Frech there are no major technical issues to take this into production – only slightly heavier (20-30 kg overall) than a bare bone interior which can be produced for 3,000 – 4,000 cars per year.

2016 Dodge Viper ACR : Concept Cars
2016 Dodge Viper ACR : Concept Cars

Snake lovers were rejoicing Friday as Dodge announced it will produce a 2016 Viper ACR as part of an ongoing offensive to reignite interest in the supercar.

Tim Kuniskis, CEO of the Dodge brand, promised that the Viper ACR will be the fastest track-ready car ever built by the automaker as he unveiled one on Friday at the automaker's Conner Avenue Assembly Plant.

The new Viper ACR and the rare media access to the plant are part of Kuniskis' effort to reposition the Viper and generate renewed interest in the car following disappointing sales.

The commitment by FCA US, the automaker previously known as Chrysler, to make an additional version of the Viper also comes amid a surge of new performance cars by automakers ranging from Acura to Ford and General Motors.

"This is the fastest, street-legal Viper track car that we have ever built," Kuniskis said. "This car is the halo of the track-side of the brand."

The decision to bring back the ACR is one of several actions Kuniskis has taken over the past several months to generate renewed interest in the Viper.

Last fall, the automaker dropped the entry-level price of the Viper by $15,000. And, earlier this year, the company launched a new website allowing customers to custom order their own Viper with any color, stripe, wheel and interior combination. The company also developed a 20-minute video already viewed 250,000 times.

FCA US sold 760 Dodge SRT Vipers in 2014, up 29% from 591 the prior year. But that's still only a fraction of the nearly 1,600 per year the company originally hoped to sell.

Is Viper competing with Hellcats?

Kuniskis said the company's recent moves are more about positive marketing than boosting Viper sales.

"You have a car like this because it has exponential impact on the marketing of the brand and the positioning of the brand," he said.

But he is aiming to define the Viper as the automaker's top performance vehicle.

These days, Kuniskis said, the Viper must compete for attention with the Dodge Charger Hellcat and Dodge Challenger Hellcat, the 707-horsepower muscle cars the automaker launched last year.

In March, FCA US was forced to stop taking orders for the Hellcats because demand exceeded the automaker's ability to build them.

A Dodge Challenger Hellcat SRT starts at just over $58,000 compared to a while a Dodge Viper SRT coupe starts at $87,095 with the GTS Coupe version jumping to $110,095.

"What we are seeing is people with Vipers buying Hellcats," Kuniskis said. "If you look at the cross shopping on the car, there is a natural cross shop between the Viper, Charger and Challenger."

The Viper also will face additional competition from the Ford GT unveiled at the Detroit auto show and launching in 2017.

Meanwhile, General Motors is working on the Chevrolet C8 Corvette that enthusiast publications say is Zora, a mid-engined GT-fighter thought to be coming for the 2017 model year. Acura plans to begin selling the NSX this year.

177 m.p.h.

Bill White of Warren, Ohio, said the introduction of the Viper ACR, which goes into production later this year, will excite thousands of Viper owners.

"The way it's been built for the track and racing, I think they are going to have problems getting enough of them made because there is a huge quantity of ACR owners out there, but not with the capability that this one has," said White, who is the regional director of the Viper Owners Club of America.

The 2016 Viper has an 8.4-liter V10 gasoline engine rated at 645 horsepower — up by 5 — and 600 pound-feet of torque.

While the new ACR has more horsepower and torque than the model that preceded it, Kuniskis said most of its improved performance comes from the attention to aerodynamics and the 2,000 pounds of downforce created by its huge rear wing and front splitter.

The top speed of the Viper ACR is 177 m.p.h., which is technically less than the Dodge SRT Viper at 204 m.p.h.

But Dodge officials say the aerodynamics and highest downforce to date, combined with more powerful brakes, allow the car to complete a lap on the track faster than any other Viper.

Viper's Detroit heritage

Part of the mystique of the Dodge Viper is how the supercar is made.

Each car is hand-built by 64 hourly workers the company refers to as craftsmen at a 400,000-square-foot plant just south of 8 Mile Road on Detroit's northeast side.

Unlike most auto plants that are visible from interstate highways, it's easy to be a block or two away from the Conner Avenue Assembly Plant, which is tucked behind an extended-stay hospital, without even seeing it.

Each worker performs a range of tasks that the company says are comparable to what 150 different workers do at a normal assembly plant.

That's possible because the pace is glacial compared with a normal assembly plant and the entire approach to building the vehicle is completely different from the mass-production process used to make higher-volume cars.

At most most modern assembly plants, finished cars pour off the line every minute. But at the Conner Avenue plant, it takes 2.5 hours for cars to cycle through the plant.

Over its 20-year history of making Vipers, the the Conner Avenue plant has produced 24,000 Vipers. That is a volume that is tiny by almost any measure. FCA US sold more than 37,000 Ram pickups last month alone.

But the fate of the plant and the Viper have been in question several times. The car, which debuted in 1992, was discontinued in 2010 in the midst of the Great Recession, causing the plant to be idled.

And last year, the plant was also idled for several months because sales of the Viper were slower than expected.

For his part, Kuniskis is determined to keep the Viper tradition alive — even if it has historically had little value as a practical car.

"How did the car exist? Who thought this was a good idea?" Kuniskis said of the original 1992 Viper. "It was absolutely insane, but at the same time, made perfect sense to me."

2015 Toyota Highlander : Current Models
2015 Toyota Highlander : Current Models

The Toyota Highlander offers nearly everything that could be expected from a midsize crossover, including a spacious, family-friendly interior with seating for up to eight, clever technology and convenience features, and a strong reputation for reliability. Numerous trim levels and powertrain options are available, including an efficient hybrid model, and each has a noticeably upscale feel.

With midsize crossovers having largely replaced minivans as Americans' people-haulers of choice, interior functionality is a top priority for the segment. It's in this area that the Highlander excels, with a variety of strong points that make it ideal for carrying people as well as cargo.

First off, with a distinctive design, appealing materials and commendable fit-and-finish, the cabin isn't tough on the eyes. There's also substance to go along with the style, as the layout incorporates numerous practical elements - for example, a novel dashboard storage tray provides a convenient place to stow odds and ends, and it also features an integrated cord management system for easy mobile device charging.

An enormous 24.5-liter center console between the front seats affords extra room for life's detritus, while tri-zone air conditioning and 12 cupholders ensure that all passengers are comfy and well-hydrated.

Two different second-row seat designs are available - captain's chairs that bring passenger capacity to seven, and a bench seat that helps the Highlander seat eight - both of which roll forward and fold down to give convenient access to the third-row. An available BlueRay DVD entertainment system makes long journeys more interesting for those in back, and in case there's a fight over what to watch, Mom or Dad can restore order with the "Driver Easy Speak" system, which uses an embedded microphone to feed the driver's speech through the Highlander's audio speakers.

Front seat entertainment comes from the standard "Display Audio" system and its attendant 6.1-inch touchscreen; uplevel models get a larger 8.0-inch display and an App Suite that brings smartphone-based access to Bing search, OpenTable, Pandora radio, Yelp and more.

When the time comes for cargo hauling, the Highlander provides 13.8 cubic feet of storage behind the rear seats, with 42.3 cubic feet available when the rear seats are folded flat. Fold down the second row as well, and there's a full 83.7 cubes to be had.

Powertrains and Fuel Economy
The Highlander is offered with the buyer's choice of three different engines, in addition to front- or all-wheel-drive. Base model Highlanders are equipped with a 2.7-liter four-cylinder that produces 185 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque, while other trim levels come standard with a 270-horsepower, 248 lb-ft of torque 3.5-liter V6.

The small four-cylinder struggles against the Highlander's weight, and because it must work so hard to get the crossover up to speed, it's barely more efficient than the V6. Overall, the strong six is a much better choice, especially for those in northern climates (AWD is unavailable with the four-cylinder).

Fuel economy is rated at 20/25 city/highway mpg for the four-cylinder, and FWD and AWD V6 models are rated at 19/25 mpg and 18/24 mpg, respectively. Those seeking maximum mileage can opt for the Highlander Hybrid, which teams the 3.5-liter V6 with two electric motors - one mounted up front, and another in back that provides AWD capability by driving the rear wheels. Total system output is 280 horsepower, and efficiency checks in at an impressive 27/28 mpg. Notably, the Highlander Hybrid is only available as a nearly full-loaded vehicle, meaning its equipment and price point may not suit all buyers.

Trim Level Breakdown
The Highlander is available in LE, LE Plus, XLE and Limited trim levels. LE models are saddled with the 2.7-liter four-cylinder, while the 3.5-liter V6 is fitted as standard through the rest of the range. The Hybrid powertrain is available only on the Limited.

The LE's standard features include tri-zone air conditioning, a six-speaker AM/FM/CD stereo with a 6.1-inch touchscreen and AUX and USB inputs, a rearview camera, Bluetooth connectivity, a 3.5-inch instrument cluster display, a multi-function steering wheel, auto on/off headlights, cruise control, power windows and locks, and 18-inch alloy wheels.

To those features, the LE Plus adds automatic tri-zone air conditioning, upgraded cloth upholstery, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, soft-touch door trim with leatherette armrets, a power liftgate with a separate glass hatch, a power-adjustable driver's seat, fog lights, HD radio, HD traffic and HD weather. The XLE includes leather upholstery, a navigation system with an eight-inch touchscreen, Entune Apps, a moonroof, a proximity key, remote start, a 4.2-inch LCD instrument cluster screen, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a universal garage door opener, 2nd row manual sunshades, Driver Easy Speak and a 110v power outlet.

Viper ACR Returns For Sale : News
Viper ACR Returns For Sale : News

Ordering will open Monday for the 2016 Dodge Viper ACR, a track version of the two-seat sports coupe that comes equipped with a much stiffer chassis and a giant carbon-fiber rear wing and other aerodynamic features to improve downforce.

The brand last offered a Viper ACR -- which stands for American Club Racer -- in 2010, prior to the Viper’s redesign in 2012.

The street-legal race car features the same 645-hp, 8.4-liter V-10 engine and six-speed manual transmission as other Vipers, but with changes to the chassis and suspension to improve its on-track performance. Like other Vipers, it is hand-built at Fiat Chrysler’s Conner Avenue Assembly plant in Detroit and can be ordered in a one-of-one configuration that can’t be duplicated by other consumers.

“This is the fastest, street-legal Viper track car that we have ever built,” Tim Kuniskis, head of the Dodge brand and its SRT performance group, said this morning of the 2016 Viper ACR. “This car is the halo of the track-side of the brand.”

With its giant carbon-fiber rear wing, a unique hood to improve air flow and four dive planes, the ACR can withstand lateral forces of up to 1.5 times the force of gravity, allowing the car to stay glued to the track.

During testing, Dodge said that the ACR with its improved aerodynamic package delivered nearly 1 ton of downforce that allowed the car to reach a top speed of 177 mph.

Dodge also beefed up the existing Viper’s Brembo brakes and widened its wheels to improve on-track performance.

Pricing for the 2016 Viper ACR was not released. It will go into production in the third quarter of 2015.

Through April, Dodge has sold 231 Vipers in the United States, down 9 percent from 2014. On May 1, the automaker had 316 unsold Vipers in its inventory nationwide, a 147-day supply.

2015 Jeep Cherokee : Current Models
2015 Jeep Cherokee : Current Models

There are three different kinds of Jeep Cherokee. First, there is the kind that might as well be a car, equipped with front-wheel drive and zero intention of performing anything remotely resembling a Jeep Thing. Second, there is the kind that is a weather-beating crossover SUV, equipped with automatic 4-wheel drive to get it from wherever you are to wherever you want to be whenever a blizzard strikes. Third, there is the kind that gets a “Trail Rated” badge, equipped with a sophisticated 4WD system that can take you just about anywhere you want to go.

Jeep markets the Cherokee as a mid-size SUV, and in terms of passenger space that represents credible positioning. Both test vehicles had an 8-way power adjustable driver’s seat providing me with a tall perch, excellent thigh support, and an expansive view out. Elbows rest on soft materials, and the thick, leather-wrapped steering wheel is great to grip.

The rear seat also offers decent room, especially if the driver and front passenger refrain from reclining their seatbacks much. People relegated to riding in back sit up nice and high, enjoying plenty of thigh support as well as decent room for knees, shins, and feet. Plus, the seat slides forward and back to help Cherokee owners create the right mix of room for people and cargo.

Still, where the Cherokee falls short, at least as far as its midsize positioning is concerned, is with regard to cargo space. With the rear seat moved all the way back, the Cherokee supplies 24.6 cu.-ft. of it, substantially less than most compact crossover SUVs. Maximum volume measures 54.9 cu.-ft., about a Miata’s worth more than a Kia Soul.

With that said, the Cherokee’s hidden compartments under the front seat cushion and cargo floor, the fold-flat front passenger’s seat, a cargo management system, and other thoughtful storage solutions help to make up for the small cargo volume numbers.

Though the Cherokee is a midsize player from a mainstream brand, it is innovative beyond its polarizing design. From the available configurable instrumentation display nestled between the gauges to the optional Uconnect infotainment system with a big 8.4-inch color touchscreen display and Uconnect Access smartphone pairing technology, the Cherokee is a thoroughly modern SUV. You can even turn it into a mobile Wi-Fi hot spot and charge your smartphone on the available wireless charging pad.

Better yet, the Cherokee’s high-tech nature doesn’t translate into a vehicle that is difficult to use. No matter what you’re looking for, chances are that you’ll find it right where you expect to. The controls work intuitively and with a sense of refinement, and the Uconnect 8.4 system is one of my all-time favorites in terms of clarity, simplicity, and touchscreen responsiveness.

Jeep also offers parking sensors and an adaptive cruise control system for the Cherokee, complete with stop-and-go capability, which means it will automatically brake to a stop and then resume speed, allowing it to be used in traffic. The optional parallel and perpendicular parking assist system, though, I could live without.

Every 2015 Cherokee is equipped with 10 airbags. To this, buyers can add Uconnect Access with 911 Assist technology, which puts the Cherokee’s occupants in touch with an emergency services operator with the push of a button. All models except for the Cherokee Sport include a reversing camera as standard equipment.

In addition to these safety-related features, and depending on the trim level selected, the 2015 Cherokee is offered with a blind spot monitoring system with rear cross-path detection, a LaneSense lane departure warning system, and a forward collision warning system that is enhanced for 2015 with new technology designed to prevent, or substantially lessen, impacts at lower vehicle speeds.

In crash tests, the NHTSA gives the 2015 Cherokee a 4-star overall rating. Note that the Jeep earns 4 or 5 stars in every single assessment, including rollover resistance. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) had not tested the 2015 Cherokee as this review was written, but last year gave the SUV top marks in all but the small overlap frontal-impact test, for which it had not yet been rated.

You can get a Jeep Cherokee equipped with a 184-horsepower, 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine, but why? The fuel economy benefit is negligible, and the optional 271-horsepower, 3.2-liter V-6 is far more satisfying. Yes, it does cost $1,495, but it will be money well spent. Trust me.

Both engines are bolted to a 9-speed automatic transmission, and front-wheel drive is standard for all versions except the Trailhawk. If you consider that fact equivalent to blasphemy, resolve it by selecting from one of the three 4WD system options.

Jeep Active Drive I is a fully automatic 4WD system that distributes power to the rear wheels whenever necessary to improve traction. This system also includes a rear-axle disconnect to improve fuel economy. Jeep Active Drive II adds low-range gearing and a Neutral mode for flat-towing behind an RV. Jeep Active Drive Lock adds a rear locking differential, and is standard for the Cherokee Trailhawk model.

In addition to these 4WD systems, the Cherokee is available with hill ascent and descent control systems as well as a Selec-Terrain traction control system with Auto, Snow, Sport, Sand/Mud, and Rock settings.

If you’re planning serious off-roading excursions, buy the Cherokee Trailhawk. In addition to the Jeep Active Drive Lock 4WD system, it includes unique 17-inch wheels with all-terrain tires, a one-inch suspension lift, revised front and rear styling to improve approach and departure angles, skid plates, tow hooks, and a 56:1 crawl ratio. Jeep says the Trailhawk can also ford water up to 20 inches deep.

Some people aren’t all that crazy about the Jeep Cherokee’s styling, and that’s understandable. It isn’t designed to appeal to everyone, and that’s actually a good thing. It helps to ensure that the Cherokee has personality, and that its owners are passionate about their SUV.

Beyond the surface, though, you should know that the Cherokee is an exceptionally well-rounded vehicle that performs daily driving tasks with the comfort and efficiency of a crossover but, especially when decked out in Trailhawk livery, can still tackle serious terrain like a traditional SUV.

Lada Raven : Concept Cars
Lada Raven : Concept Cars

Lada supercar anyone? Lada aren’t really known for building supercars. In fact the Soviet-designed sh*t boxes were about as far removed from supercars as the Wright Flyer is from an F-16. And although their current lineup of vehicles is a significant improvement over their past models, they still look more like a mid-’90s Kia, than a 21st century passenger car – with the possible exception of the upcoming 2015 Vesta sedan.

To sum up. The 2012 Lada Xray concept is about the closest thing Lada has ever made to a supercar. And it was an SUV. And a concept.

Russian designer Dmitry Lazarev thinks it’s about time his country’s most infamous automaker got their act together and develop a proper supercar. And considering the recent shutdown of Marussia – Russia’s only genuine supercar manufacturer – now might be the time to do just that.

The Lada Raven supercar concept is an outlandish design, with massive gaping grilles up front, huge vents out the back, and enormous, bulbous wheel arches. It doesn’t look much like any previous Lada, but that’s no bad thing. From the renderings it appears Lazarev has envisaged a mid-engine layout for his concept. Although quite where Lada will get their hands on an engine worthy of such a dramatic-looking supercar is a mystery.

Mercedes-Benz Scent Atomizer : Accessories
Mercedes-Benz Scent Atomizer : Accessories

If I could bottle the scent of my (very used) first car, it would be something like Eau de French Fries and Shoes. No amount of royal pine Little Trees hanging from the rearview could mask it. Mercedes-Benz has now come up with a whole new level of car fragrance. The new ($100,000+) 2014 S-Class sedans come with the ($350) option of a built-in fragrance atomizer and four custom colognes.

Welcome To The Future OF Auto Appeal.
Located in the glove box, the “active perfuming system” can be turned on and off by the driver, who can also control the intensity (low, medium, or high). The perfumed air passes into the cabin of the car through the A/C vents in five-minute intervals. You can choose from four exclusive interior fragrances created with perfumer Marc vom Ende: Freeside Mood (light citrus), Nightlife Mood (spice, oud), Downtown Mood (floral, musk), and Sports Mood (green, citrus). Each scent was created to complement the leathery smell of a new car, and Mercedes swears that the scents won’t transfer to your clothing. Each atomizer lasts for a few months and can be replaced (for $110) at Mercedes dealers. The fragrance system also includes an empty glass vial to fill with any alcohol-based perfume of your choosing. (Perhaps the scent of money? Hey, it exists.) And if the aromatherapy feature isn't enough, the new S-class comes with a hot stone massage feature in the seats, too—it’s a luxury spa on wheels.

Renault 5 Turbo : Classic Cars
Renault 5 Turbo : Classic Cars

Instantly recognisable as THE small car of the 1980s packing near-supercar punch, the formidable Renault 5 Gordini Turbo (the proper, mid-engined homologation special, mind you, not the conventional front-engined, front-wheel-drive equivalent) is a hot favourite in the Classic Driver office…

Built in small numbers for Group 4 and Group B rallying, the Renault 5’s modest little 1.4-litre engine was boosted to a staggering 160bhp (and that’s in road-going form) to power this miniature hot-shot. Just as importantly, the engine was taken out from under the bonnet and, once the rear seats had been removed, plonked behind the driver and front passenger. It was, of course, rear-wheel drive and claimed 0-60mph in under seven seconds, with a top speed of something around 125mph. What fun.

The prototype Turbo actually appeared as early as 1978, at the Paris Salon of that year, and from 1980 onwards it proved itself highly effective as a competitive rally car, with victories that included the 1981 Monte Carlo Rally and 1982 Tour de Corse.

The 1983 pictured car, however, is a road car (left-hand drive). It was clearly much-loved by the third of its four owners from new, as he kept the car for a full 26 years, from 1986 to 2012. The car is a ‘Turbo 1’, and hence has the aluminium doors, roof and tailgate not found on the more widely available, all-steel Turbo 2. We’re told it had a full mechanical overhaul in 2014, with the engine upgraded to 210bhp, but still retains its original interior, seats and wheels. It will be offered for sale by Bonhams, at the Goodwood 73rd Members’ Meeting on 21 March 2015, at an estimated price of £55,000 to 65,000.

540C Is The Lowest Mclaren Goes : News
540C Is The Lowest Mclaren Goes : News

McLaren has announced the 540C will remain the company's entry-level model as a cheaper car is not being considered. After promising to remain an independent marque, McLaren now says they won't move further down market by launching a sub-540C model. The reveal was made by the company's global director of communications Wayne Bruce in an interview with our colleagues from The Truth About Cars. He went on to specify McLaren isn't interested in mass production and it is not possible at this point to come out with a base McLaren priced at less than $100,000 due to the production costs related to carbon fiber. Bruce said McLaren is now making a profit and they don't want to risk profitability by investing in a mass market model. He also believes coming out with such a car would ruin the brand's exclusivity, but they do estimate total production will eventually reach 4,000 units per year once the Sports Series lineup will be complete. This annual production figure represents the maximum capacity of McLaren's factory in Woking factory and Bruce says it will likely remain the limit as they are not considering an expansion of the facility or building a new one.

2016 Mazda CX-3 : Current Models
2016 Mazda CX-3 : Current Models

While U.S. buyers continue waiting for a promised diesel version of the Mazda 6 sedan, Mazda is set to unveil another diesel model for other markets.

The 2016 Mazda CX-3 is the brand's entry into the booming subcompact crossover field, and it will also be the next Mazda to forgo spark plugs.

In fact, the CX-3 will be offered only with a diesel engine in its home market of Japan, CEO Masamichi Kogai told Reuters during the CX-3's launch there.

Japan isn't generally considered a strong market for diesels.

Diesels made up less than 3 percent of new-car sales in the country last year, and they reportedly suffer an image problem from being called a health hazard by a former Tokyo governor.

The compression-ignition engines are globally most popular in Europe, where they make up roughly half of all new-car sales in the European Union.

Yet Kogai believes more Japanese buyers are considering diesel. Offering the engines in the CX-3 also follows Mazda's current strategy of increasing fuel efficiency without relying on hybrid powertrains.

The Japanese CX-3 will be offered only with a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that wears the same SkyActiv-D badging as the larger 2.2-liter four promised for the U.S.-market Mazda 6 sedan.

That engine's U.S. launch has been repeatedly delayed because, Mazda claims, it doesn't meet the company's performance expectations.

Meanwhile, the only engine option for the U.S.-market CX-3 will be a 2.0-liter gasoline four-cylinder.

It's paired with a six-speed automatic transmission and available with either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.

The CX-3 goes on sale in Japan this week, with U.S. sales set to begin in the next couple of months--powered only by gasoline.

Mazda plans to build 150,000 copies of the crossover per year, and sell it in 120 countries.

2016 Honda Accord : Concept Cars
2016 Honda Accord : Concept Cars

What changes will make it different?
Probably styling and possibly a powertrain upgrade. This popular midsize four-door sedan and two-door coupe are due a freshening and it’ll likely come for model-year 2016. Look for designers to lift a few exterior styling elements from the 2015 RLX luxury sedan from Honda’s premium Acura brand and apply them to the 2016 Accord. The Accord Plug-In Hybrid could also switch to a turbocharged gas engine for more power. These changes would be a midcycle freshening to an automobile last redesigned for model-year2013 and set for its next full redesign around model-year 2018.

Why should I wait for the 2016 model?
For the newest styling and powertrain technology. A styling update would carry this car to its next full redesign, making your ‘16 Accord look current for the next few years. If you’re among the small percentage of this vehicle’s buyers interested in the Plug-In Hybrid, addition of a turbo could boost performance. Most Hondas sold in America are built at the Japanese automaker’s plants in the U.S. and production of the Hybrid and Hybrid Plug-In is likely to be transferred from Japan. That could reduce their prices.

Should I buy the current 2015 instead?
Yes, if the very latest in looks and tech is less important to you than getting an excellent automobile – before the inevitable model-year price increase. The 2016 Accord won’t change fundamentally, leaving the ‘15 a terrific choice in a midsize sedan or sporty coupe. And its reputation for reliability and resale value is already an industry standard.

Will the styling be different?
More deeply etched lines could provide a sleeker appearance – and benefit fuel economy through improved aerodynamics. The interior could get new colors, contours, and graphics but would retain analog-style gauges and a center dashboard control stack with functionality as its theme. Expect no major changes to the lineup. Four-cylinder sedans should be offered in five trim levels: base LX, dressier Sport, better-equipped EX, leather-upholstered EX-L, and EX-L with Navi (a navigation system). V-6 models likely would return in three trims: EX-L, EX-L with Navi, and top-line Touring. Coupes will mirror those designations, with four-cylinder two-doors also available in LX-S form. Again offered only as a sedan, the Hybrid will likely come in EX, EX-L, and Touring trim with the Plug-In Hybrid in one high-level grade roughly equivalent to an EX-L with Navi – though with the carmaker’s “bio-fabric” interior materials in place of leather.

Any mechanical changes?
The Hybrid will again combine a four-cylinder gas engine with an electric motor, though reports suggest Honda could give it a turbocharged engine. That could generate more than the 2015’s net 198 horsepower – or allow the automaker to save gas by downsizing the engine from 2.0-liters. All 2016 Accords will retain a front-wheel-drive configuration. A 2.4-liter four-cylinder will again be the most popular choice and should repeat with 186 horsepower and a choice of a six-speed manual or a continuously variable transmission. Instead of set gear ratios, a CVT delivers power like a rheostat. Expect the V-6 to again account for less than 20 percent of Accord sales. This 3.5-liter should return at 278 horsepower and link with a six-speed automatic transmission in sedans and a choice of manual or automatic in Coupes. The Plug-In Hybrid will again be able to capture an initial charge from the power grid for a range of around 13 miles on electric-only power. After that, the gas engine will kick in and it’ll run like a conventional hybrid. Initial charge time should remain between one and three hours, depending on the charger source. And a console button will again allow the driver to choose when to use EV mode. Both of these Hybrids use an electric motor that acts as a CVT.

Will fuel economy improve?
If the hybrid gets a turbo and uses it to reduce the size of its gas engine, its fuel-economy ratings could improve from 2015’s 50/45/47 mpg city/highway/combined. Otherwise, expect the hybrid and the other 2016 Accords to repeat at or near their model-year 2015 ratings. For gas-only Accords, the 2.4-liter four-cylinder should reprise a laudable 27/36/30 mpg city/highway/combined with the CVT and 28/34/28 with the six-speed manual. Expect V-6 versions to again rate approximately 21/34/26 mpg with automatic transmission and 18/28/22 for coupes equipped with the manual. This V-6 almost certainly will retain cylinder deactivation in which three cylinders are automatically idled in low-demand driving to conserve fuel. The Plug-In Hybrid should again rate 47/46/46 mpg. Note, however, that under the EPA’s electricity-to-gas conversion metric, the Plug-In earns an overall rating of 115 mpg-equivalent.

Will it have new features?
Don’t look for sweeping changes to Accord’s long list of available features. Honda does not offer options per se, electing instead to equip each model in a lineup with a well-defined suite of features. The entry-level LX version will again come nicely equipped, with an eight-inch LCD dashboard touchscreen display, 16-inch alloy wheels, a rearview camera, cruise control, Bluetooth and USB connectivity, tilting and telescoping steering column, dual-zone climate control, and power windows, locks and mirrors. Repeating as standard equipment on all models will be antiskid and traction-control, antilock brakes, a tire-pressure monitoring system, daytime running lights (LEDs on EX-L and Touring versions), two rear LATCH points (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children), child-proof rear door locks. All but the LX and Sport will return with a power moonroof and heated power mirrors. EX and EX-L levels will again add such features as Honda’s innovative and effective video-camera-based LaneWatch blind-spot monitor, with EX-L and Touring versions getting forward-collision and lane-departure warning systems. Heated front seats with memory driver’s seat will again be part of the Touring models’ standard features, along with adaptive cruise control, forward-collision and lane-departure warning systems, premium audio, and keyless entry with pushbutton start. How will 2016 prices be different? Prices shouldn’t increase drastically. Expect a base-price range of roughly $24,100-$35,140, including a destination fee of approximately $800. The Hybrid should start around $31,400, the Plug-In around $40,300 – though they could actually decrease in price if production is relocated to the U.S.

1949 Bristol 401 : Classic Cars
1949 Bristol 401 : Classic Cars

The Bristol automobiles were designed in a wind tunnel meaning there are no exposed door handles; rather push a large button in the door and it opens. The body was constructed of a steel tubular frame with an aluminum body. The Bristol Cars Company was created by the Bristol Airplane Company which is evident by the quest for aerodynamic designs. With their experience in designing airplanes it was only natural that the technology and mechanics utilized their aviation experience. The first Bristol automobile was the Bristol 400 created in 1946. The Milanese designer, Carrozzeria Touring, had inspired the Bristol's body. He had also been instrumental in creating pre-war designs for the BMW 328, the very car on which all early Bristols were closely based upon. The early Bristol models used a BMW 326 chassis and a BMW 328 engine. The bodies were similar in design to the BMW 327.

The Bristol 400 was produced from 1947 through 1950. It had very strong similarities to the BMW models, even imitating the radiator grille. The second series, the Bristol 401, was created from 1948 through 1953. The 402 was a convertible built on the 401 chassis and designed exclusively for the rich and famous. The convertibles hoods conveniently stowed behind the seats out of eye's view and the trunk provides ample cargo space, regardless of the room taken by the convertible top. The windows were wind-up rather than side curtains. The 2+2 configuration was sporty, but the rear seats provided little room for their passengers. The interiors were plush with leather interior, ivory buttons and a curved dashboard. The two-door sedans had wood for the dashboard. The transmission is operated through a floorshifter. Under the hood lurks a powerful 2 liter, six-cylinder BMW engine with 3 downdraught Solex carburetors and pushrod-operated overhead valves. During the production run, there were around 23 convertibles created with only 13 accounted for in modern times.

The Bristol 403 were built from 1953 through 1955. They are distinguished by a long, flowing hood with four lights mounted cleanly on the front of the vehicle. The body is complete and the lines are clean. The round wheel arches continue the sculpted body design, free of gaps, and gently covering the large wheels. The Touring design is amplified in the Bristol 403 and draws strong inspiration from the early BMW pre-war models. The long hood quietly hides the 2-liter BMW straight-six engine. With its 100 horsepower output, the 403 could go from zero-to-sixty in around fourteen seconds with a top speed of around 80 mph. These performance figures are not astounding, even the Bristol 401 was quicker. The aerodynamic body and potent engine were not enough to combat the weight of the vehicle. Still, the Bristol 403 was a magnificently designed vehicle in regards to artistry and aerodynamics. With around 281 examples of the 403's created, their exclusivity is forever guaranteed.

Ultimately, the Bristol is the result of a superior German BMW engine, Italian coachwork and aerodynamic efficiency.

Bentley Bentayga : Concept Cars
Bentley Bentayga : Concept Cars

The Bentley Bentayga SUV will add plug-in hybrid and diesel variants in 2017, a year after the W12-powered model launches around the world.

The hybrid variant will be able to travel about 31 miles on electricity. It will have a V6 or V8 gasoline engine to extend range, though a final decision has not been made as to which one will be used, CEO Wolfgang Dürheimer said. The diesel, a V8, will be the first in a Bentley.

The company confirmed "Bentayga" as the name of its new SUV at the Detroit Auto Show. Speaking to Autoblog on the show floor, Dürheimer said the British luxury maker has high ambitions for its upcoming model. It expects to sell 3,500 copies of the SUV globally in 2016, which would lift the company's total sales to around 15,000. About a quarter of the Bentayga's sales volume is projected to come from US customers.

Bentley can't take orders because the vehicle hasn't been officially priced yet, but it already has a list of 4,000 customers who are interested in buying the SUV, and most have put down deposits.

"Our customers liked the idea," Dürheimer said. "We see a growing SUV market share around the world."

The Bentayga has changed since the concept, called the EXP 9 F, debuted at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show, and the front has been modified to look more like Bentley's production models. The interior, however, remains close to the original concept.

2015 Volkswagen Jetta GLI : Current Models
2015 Volkswagen Jetta GLI : Current Models

Think of the Volkswagen Jetta GLI as the VW Golf GTI’s wallflower cousin, and you’ll get a sense of what this often overlooked sport sedan has to offer. No longer siblings in the way they once were, the Jetta GLI sits on a less sophisticated platform and has a less powerful engine than the redesigned 2015 Golf GTI, but nevertheless employs a similarly compelling recipe of practicality, value, and fun.

A turbocharged, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine sits behind the Jetta GLI’s special honeycomb grille, making 207 horsepower and 210 lb.-ft. of torque. Peak torque is made fairly low in the rev range, and remains available nearly to where peak horsepower takes over. The result is an engine that feels much stronger than the numbers might suggest.

A 6-speed manual gearbox is standard, with a 6-speed Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG – an automatic manual transmission) available as an option. Both route power to the front wheels through Volkswagen’s cross-differential system (XDS), which is designed to limit torque steer and make the Jetta GLI feel more responsive turning into, and accelerating out of, corners.

Combine these bits of mechanical goodness with a lowered performance suspension, attractive 18-inch aluminum wheels, and sport-bolstered front seats wrapped in V-tex leatherette with red piping, and you’ve got an affordable, German-flavored sport sedan. Additionally, the Jetta GLI features standard vertical fog lights, LED taillights, a sporty 3-spoke steering wheel, and stainless steel pedal caps.

Oh, and did we mention the Jetta's roomy trunk, starting price of about $27,000, and "Top Safety Pick" crash-test rating? There is plenty to love about a Jetta GLI.

Changes for 2015
Updated styling with new aluminum wheel design, LED taillights, improved aerodynamics
Revised interior details including instrumentation, trim, and accents
Available bi-Xenon headlights with an adaptive front lighting system
Optional blind spot monitoring system with rear cross-traffic alert
Free maintenance program shrinks to one year or 12,000 miles
