1979 Fiat X1/9 : Classic Cars
If you’re looking for an Italian mid-engined sports car that won’t clean out the savings account, the Fiat X1/9 is a great car to consider. This 1979 Fiat X1/9, for sale on Hemmings.com, comes from a benchmark year for the model as the engine displacement grew from 1.3 to 1.5 liters, bringing a little more pep to Turin’s mid-engined targa. In addition to the new engine, a five-speed gearbox was included with new one-piece bumpers and a raised engine cover to provide more room for the larger power plant. As with most 1970s cars, rust is something to look out for and there are plenty of spots to be aware of including underneath the windshield, the seams in the hood as well as the various panel bottoms. From the seller’s description:
An exceptional example of Bertone’s exquisitely designed sports car for Fiat, this all original two-owner X1/9 has been beautifully maintained its entire life by Jeff Wilson Enterprises in Orange County, California. Finished in the 1979-only color “Rosso Ciliegia” (Metallic Red), the body is in immaculate condition with no signs of corrosion or damage. The original tape striping and protective trim are in like-new condition as is the removable top and engine cover. Once seated in the cockpit, you are transported back to the heyday of Italian design under the hospice of Nuccio Bertone and the X1/9′s chief designer, Marcello Gandini. The parchment vinyl and cloth seats with contrasting brown side bolsters are in pristine condition and the steering wheel and dash have been completely protected from the California sun. The sporty 4-spoke steering wheel and unique shifter are both comfortable and very responsive. The interior shows very little sign of use with the exception of some minor wear on the carpeting near the pedals. This was the first year for the larger 1498cc motor and 5-speed transmission and both the engine and drivetrain have clearly been babied by the original owner. The included service records show only routine maintenance including scheduled oil changes and tune-ups. The car runs and drives like the day it came off the showroom floor. Do not miss this chance to own what is arguably one of the best examples in the country.
