Saleen Inc., celebrating its twentieth anniversary as a specialty vehicle manufacturer, specializes in the manufacture of vehicles for enthusiasts that include technology developed from the Saleen/Allen Speedlab race team, eight-time winners of sports car racing manufacturer championships.

The company, started by former racing driver Steve Saleen, began in 1983. Saleen used his business degree from USC, coupled with experience in his father's manufacturing business, to build the company. His passion for racing also played a part. Steve began autocrossing, then rapidly moved into SCCA pro series (Formula Atlantic, Trans-Am Championship) and then into Indy car racing.

By 1984, the first Saleen street car was ready for sale. It boasted special aerodynamics, an attractive and highly functional cockpit and a precise handling suspension package. The result was a car built as a limited edition model with individual serial numbers assuring authenticity. Later, demonstrating the car's performance, the company’s race team brought home a victory for Saleen, Ford and sponsor General Tire at the 24-hour race at Mosport Park in Ontario, Canada.

Italian sports car and super car maker Ferrari issued the Ferrari GG 50 in the year 2005 at the Tokyo Motor Show. It is a super car that is meant to commemorate designer Giugiaro’s fifty years in the automotive business.

The Ferrari F1 GG 50, as it is known under its full name, takes in to consideration certain F1 modifications that allow for better performance and speed. The Ferrari F1 GG 50 utilizes a sixty five degree V12 petrol Configuration that is naturally aspirated. This Configuration can develop a peak power of up to 540 hp. This translates in to about 94 hp per liter. The compression ratio on the Ferrari F1 GG 50 is 11.2 to 1. The Ferrari F1 GG 50 utilizes an odd sequential mode automatic transmission.

The Ferrari F1 GG 50 takes the form of a 2 + 2 coupe super car. The vast majority of its design cues have been taken from the Ferrari 612 Scaglietti. The steering wheel is derived from previous Ferrari F1 models. Some of the Ferrari F1 GG 50’s unique parts include the dashboard, as well as the satellite navigator known as the AVIC X1R, which was made by Pioneer.

The Rolls-Royce Corniche IV was the fourth generation of a Rolls-Royce luxury car that was available as both a coupe and a convertible. The Rolls-Royce Corniche was in production from 1971 until 2002, although there was a break in production between the end of the fourth generation and the introduction of the fifth. Construction of the first four generations of the Rolls-Royce Corniche ran consecutively from 1971 to 1995, when it was ultimately terminated. The fifth generation of the vehicle was launched in 2000, but was only manufactured for a very short period before being terminated in 2001.

Rolls-Royce Corniche IV Origins
When the Rolls-Royce Corniche was introduced in the 1970s, it provided a coupe and convertible luxury car to complement the Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow. Both the coupe and convertible models were in production since 1966, but were renamed to the Rolls-Royce Corniche in 1971. A Bentley Corniche was also in production, but it was renamed the Bentley Continental in 1984. Corniche was registered by Rolls-Royce since the late 1930s, but the car wasn’t built due to the start of World War II.

About the Rolls-Royce Corniche IV
As with all Rolls-Royce models, the Rolls-Royce Corniche IV was a luxury car. Essentially, the Rolls-Royce Corniche was a two-door version of the four-door Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow. Although a coupe and convertible were initially launched, the coupe was dropped from the model line in 1981. All subsequent generations of the Rolls-Royce Corniche, including the Rolls-Royce Corniche IV, came as a two-door convertible only. Although the Rolls-Royce Corniche IV was a big car, it had a reputation for being quicker and easier to handle than would be expected of most cars of its size.

Rolls-Royce Corniche IV Features
Besides terminating the coupe version of the first Rolls-Royce Corniche, very little changed style-wise between all four generations of the car. From the outside, it is difficult to differentiate between the four generations of the car. Of course, the coupe version was only produced for the first generation, but subtle changes have been made to the convertible. The original Rolls-Royce Corniche could be painted with two-tone paintwork, but later versions came in a single color. Bumpers were changed to alloy and rubber from the original chrome ones, and from the third generation were painted the same color as the body of the car.

New alloy wheels were fitted for the Rolls-Royce Corniche III and IV, and a glass rear window was added to replace the plastic one when the Rolls-Royce Corniche IV went into production. Not only was the window in the rear of the soft top changed, but so was the mechanism for latching it to the car. Unlike the previous generations, the soft top for the Rolls-Royce Corniche IV had automatic latching instead of manual latching.

Opulent is one word to describe the interior of the car. Not only was it made to look luxurious, but to provide the utmost in comfort for all passengers. An all-leather interior was manufactured using Connolly leather, and with each subsequent generation, the seating was adjusted to improve comfort. Chrome gauges and wood trim are used for the instrument panel, plus all manner of features are included as standard. Dual-zone temperature control systems, multi-speaker audio systems, and ride control systems are all fitted to improve comfort and enjoyment during the ride. The soft top is insulated to reduce noise.

Rolls-Royce Corniche IV Evolution
The Rolls-Royce Corniche IV was unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show in 1992, with models ready for sales for the 1992 model year. Production of the convertible moved to Crewe in England, as the London factory closed in 1994. It was fitted with a 6.75-liter V-8 engine that was introduced during the production of the second generation of the Rolls-Royce Corniche; there was little improvement in power output, but torque improved significantly. Over time, the engine was modified so that the power output was also increased. For the Rolls-Royce Corniche IV, owners could choose between the standard V-8 engine and a turbocharged version. With the addition of the turbochargers, the engine was known as one of the most powerful engines available at the time.

In 1992, Rolls-Royce also launched a 25th anniversary edition of the Rolls-Royce Corniche. Only these cars were painted Ming Blue and had an anniversary plate on the dash. In 1995, the production of the Rolls-Royce Corniche IV terminated, as did the model line, until 2000 when the Rolls-Royce Corniche V was launched.

In honor of the Nissan Juke’s fifth birthday, some British artists turned sheets of paper and cardboard into a Nissan Juke. Similar to the cardboard Lexus RC350, this origami Juke is a celebration of the model's Japanese roots and technical advancements.

Artist Owen Gildersleeve spent more than 200 hours folding and gluing this Juke into existence and left us with a good facsimile of the mini 'ute.

During its short life, the Juke has been exposed to some strange marketing experiments. This origami model will simply be just another notch in the Juke’s weird bedpost. The Juke-R and Terry Grant's two-wheel adventure around the Goodwood festival of Speed (below) helped place this Nissan on the top of viral video lists.

Whats next for the Juke? We're not sure. But we're hoping Nissan will put it through more zany challenges.

Hyundai’ s upcoming Genesis luxury brand is slowly taking shape. Only weeks after it was revealed that Hyundai would spin-off the Genesis into a separate premium brand, new information has revealed that the Genesis brand could include more models other than the previously mentioned G70, G80, and G90.

Filings made by Hyundai with the Korean Intellectual Property Rights Information Service (KIPRIS) back in July 2015 shed some light on some possible new models to come out of the Genesis brand. Some of the names include G60, GC60, GT60, GV60, GC64, GT64, and G65. There have been no indications on what those models could be, but the G60 could turn into the company’s version of the BMW 3 Series and the GC60, GT60, and GV60 names could be variants under the G60 model. At this point, reports have indicated that the current Genesis will be rebadged as the G80 once the Genesis brand goes live. The Hyundai Equus will also move to the Genesis brand under the name G90. Then there’s the G70, which is still a mystery model at this point, but could end up being a rival model to the BMW 5 Series.

If these patent filings bear fruit in the future, the Genesis brand could turn into a full-scale premium outfit sooner than we thought. There’s already talk that the G90 will live up to its flagship status and be the first model of the new brand to make its debut. There’s no timetable on when that’s going to be, but don’t be surprised if it welcomes 2016 with a bang by taking the stage at the 2015 North American International Auto Show in January.

Based on what we know so far, Hyunda’s plan to launch six new models under the Genesis brand by 2020 is going full steam ahead. There’s every indication to also believe that Hyundai Hyundai is really taking this seriously. The new report citing all those name filings seem to suggest that the Korean automaker wants to aggressively fill up the Genesis brand with models that can compete in key segments where rivals like BMW, Mercedes, Infiniti, and Lexus currently occupy.

It’s really too good to be true if you think about it. At the very least, it’s hard not to get excited about what the Genesis Genesis brand will look like when it becomes a stand-alone brand that’s independent from Hyundai. So far, we only know of the G90 and the G80. The speculation surrounding the G70 and the G60 seem to be spot-on too, given the hierarchy in the nomenclature of the models. That leaves us with the G64 and the G65. Could this pertain to a future crossover and SUV, respectively? That’s not out of the question.

There’s also that matter of filling up the Genesis brand with entry level models akin to the BMW 1 Series and the Mercedes A Class. Could there be patent filings of G40 and G50 that we still don’t know about? At this point, I’m willing to bet that Hyundai’s already done that or is in the process of doing it in the near future. It wouldn’t make sense to have filings on the upper end of the “G-number” nomenclature and then leave out the lower end.

With the Middle East such a major market for supercars, it was inevitable that the region eventually would birth its own supercar company. Now it has. W Motors, which bills itself as the first Arabian brand of high-performance luxury sports cars, was established in Lebanon in 2012 and moved to the more luxury-goods-friendly environment of the United Arab Emirates the following year. At the U.A.E.’s Dubai auto show, W Motors unveiled its latest offering, the Fenyr SuperSport.

The mid-engine Fenyr features a carbon-composite body over an aluminum chassis. Motivation comes from a 4.0-liter twin-turbo flat-six engine by German tuner RUF that makes 900 horsepower and 885 lb-ft of torque. A seven-speed dual-clutch automatic sends that output to the rear wheels. Top speed is claimed to exceed 249 mph, with 62 mph arriving in “less than” 2.7 seconds.

2016 Lexus GX 460 : Current Models
2016 Lexus GX 460 : Current Models

The 2016 Lexus GX 460 SUV is on sale now at Lexus dealerships, priced at $51,080, including a $940 destination charge.

The price reflects a $655 increase over the base 2015 GX 460.

The top-of-the-line 2016 GX 460 Luxury model is priced at $62,455, including shipping.

This is a carryover vehicle with minimal changes for the new model year.

Owners can now opt in for Lexus Enform Service Connect with a one-year trial subscription. This new service lets customers remotely view information, including maintenance alerts and a vehicle health report.

Another option is Lexus Enform Remote, which lets the owner remotely view and control certain vehicle features using a mobile app for iOS and Android devices. Key features include remote door lock and unlock; remote stop-start for the engine and climate control and a vehicle finder.

The GX 460 is equipped with a 301-horsepower 4.6-liter V8 engine with a 6,500-pound trailer capacity.

Key competitors include the Audi Q7, BMW X5 and Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Toyota Sinks $1B Into US Research : News

Toyota Motor Corporation has created the Toyota Research Institute, Inc, (TRI) an R&D facility to be headquartered in Silicon Valley near the campus of Stanford University. Set to open in January, TRI is being charged with performing advanced research and product planning, focusing its initial efforts in the areas of artificial intelligence and robotics as it pertains to vehicles. With a projected staff of 200, it also will serve as a conduit between fundamental research and ultimate product development. The automaker plans to invest $1 billion over the next five years to support TRI, which will have a sister facility located near the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge. Toyota has already committed $50 million to those schools to establish joint artificial intelligence research centers at each.

TRI is being headed by Dr. Gill Pratt who joined the firm in September as Toyota's Executive Technical Advisor after serving as program manager for the U.S. government's DARPA Robotics Challenge from 2010-2015. It will utilize artificial intelligence and big data to accelerate the pace of fundamental research in ways that "contribute to a sustainable future where everyone can experience a safer, freer, and unconstrained life." To that end, Pratt notes TRI's three primary goals will be to find new ways to decrease the likelihood of vehicle accidents; make driving accessible to everyone, regardless of ability; and apply Toyota technology used for outdoor mobility to select indoor environments, particularly for the support of senior citizens who are becoming a large percentage of the American population. TRI's brief also encompasses a broader mission to improve production efficiency and accelerate scientific discovery with respect to materials.

What you see here is the culmination of a lifelong dream of a young Californian to become the owner of an Italian exotic. An obsession that took Tom Meade to Modena via any means possible and became a way of life until his death in 2013. Beginning with old Ferrari race car chassis that he could obtain cheaply, Thomas Meade hand-crafted three Thomassima models—I,II, and III. Sadly, number I met its demise in a flood, and number III is on permanent display in the Ferrari museum. Which brings us to number II, or what has been titled a Ferrari 250 P/4 Roadster. Recently unveiled at the 2015 Concorso Italiano, the 1967 Thomassima II is freshly restored to working and original condition and is available for purchasing for the discerning (and deep-pocketed) collector.

Hennessey Performance was founded in 1991 as an extension of John Hennessey’s competitive spirit, engineering creativity, and burning desire to keep finding ways and events that allowed him to go faster.

In a whirlwind of speed related events over the span of that year, John Hennessey and his self-modified, daily driver Mitsubishi 3000 GT commuted to and participated in a diverse combination of speed events that included Nevada open road races, the Pikes Peak Hill Climb and a record setting 173-mph run at the Bonneville Salt Flats.

John was obviously hooked on racing, but he realized that he wasn’t alone in his need for speed. Already a successful entrepreneur in the environmental services industry, and looking for ways to supplement his ravenous racing budget, John saw the potential for turning his automotive passion into his life’s work by taking the knowledge and development skills he had gained through racing and probing the performance potential of his car to others with similar cars and speed-focused ambitions.

The first few years saw John’s efforts concentrated on building and modifying turbocharged imports such as the Mitsubishi 3000 GT, Toyota Supra and Mazda RX7. But in March 1993, the future and successful growth of Hennessey Performance was set into motion when a customer, impressed by John’s winning drives in the Nevada open road challenge events, came to him with one of the first Vipers in the country seeking modifications that would make him competitive in similar events.

Those modifications and tuning resulted in an increase of about 100 more horsepower, prompting John to dub it the Hennessey Venom 500 Viper. The car’s subsequent 164-mph average run in the Silver State Challenge drew the attention of the automotive media as one of the first, if not the first, Viper to participate in any form of competition.

The next few years saw demand for Hennessey enhanced Vipers, including cars built for Jay Leno, Bob Lutz and other Chrysler executives, increase to the point that by 1996, Hennessey Performance was dealing exclusively in the V10 Chrysler super sports car. To meet this demand, the company had grown to over a dozen employees and was operating out of a 30,000 square-foot hangar at the Houston airport.

In 2005, once again a new customer provided the means for a major change in the growth and direction of Hennessey Performance. Don Goldman had taken early retirement from a successful career of acquiring, growing then selling businesses to concentrate on his passion of car collecting. His desire to build a Ford GT capable of doing well over 200 mph on a mile long course initiated a successful diversification for Hennessey Performance into building high performance

Don Goldman was also instrumental in mentoring and partnering with John on the 2004 acquisition of the Lonestar Motorsports Park drag strip facility and subsequent acquisition, in early 2008, of the adjacent property that is now includes the headquarters of Hennessey Performance.

During this period, John was watching what another friend and customer Bob Lutz was planning in terms of performance cars in his new role at General Motors. When the Cadillac CTS-V arrived in 2008, Hennessey Performance was ready with modifications that could put out 650 horsepower from its Corvette derived V8.

That same year also saw the design and development of the Venom GT ultra exotic sports car in England.

Building on its success with the Cadillac CTS-V, Hennessey Performance became one of the first aftermarket companies to offer high performance models of the Camaro when it arrived.

In contrast to John’s one man, apartment based startup operation in 1991, Hennessey Performance currently has 30 employees based in a 30,000-square foot facility off Interstate 10 about 45 minutes west of Houston.

In addition to administrative offices and a customer showroom, facilities include 20 service bays, 16 vehicle lifts, a welding and fabrication shop, Dynojet 248C chassis dynamometer rated to 1800 rear wheel horsepower, Dyno Dynamics all-wheel drive chassis dynamometer rated to 2000 horsepower, and a Hunter 4-wheel laser alignment rack built in-ground to handle lowered vehicles and race cars.

The surrounding acreage includes a 1/4-mile drag strip and 1.4-mile road course to allow testing and development to be done on site.

Hennessey Performance also operates a state certified Tuner School on the premises offering hands-on instruction to students interested in pursuing a career in aftermarket performance tuning. The school has also provided Hennessey with some of its own in-house technicians.

After two decades, while the size and scope of the operations, along with the vehicles and products, have diversified and expanded, the founding principle of Hennessey Performance has remained unchanged. The goal is to provide ultimate performance for customers, who like founder John Hennessey, have a passion for speed and racing.

Kahn has released the first pictures of its new Flying Huntsman 105 Defender Pick-Up prototype.

Based on the Land Rover Defender, the pick-up is the latest in what has become a family of Flying Huntsman vehicles. The first two models, a standard off-roader and a more hardcore 6x6 version, were unveiled at the Geneva motor show earlier this year.

Kahn says it has added 15in to the standard car’s 90in wheelbase, as well as adding extra length to the front and widening the car by 150mm.

The Flying Hunstman Pick-Up is based on the Defender 90 pick-up, but the British tuning house says it has overhauled the suspension and braking systems and fitted a new six-speed automatic transmission.

Other mechanical modifications include new wings at the front and rear, extended wheel arches, a new front bumper, chrome headlights, new bonnet and side vents and 18in alloy wheels.

Inside, Kahn says the car gets sports seats clad in Artico leather, with custom fittings used throughout. Among the new fittings is a Churchill clock and a new Kahn-designed steering wheel.

Despite the car currently being designated a prototype, Kahn plans to put the model into production with prices starting at £70,650. The company says the car represents "exceptional value for money".

2016 Green Car of the Year Finalists : Awards

Green Car Journal recently announced the finalists for its 2016 Green Car of the Year award. Strangely enough, no diesels made the cut, but it’s not all hybrids, either: The gas-powered Honda Civic and Hyundai Sonata are in the running. Naturally, the three other contenders are the major names that always come up in green car discussions: the Chevy Volt, the Audi A3 E-Tron and the Toyota Prius. (Read our takes on the four of the five finalists below.)

To arrive at this set of finalists, the editors over at the Green Car Journal looked at all vehicles on the market, no matter the fuel source or onboard tech, and boiled that list down to the five that we currently have. The vetting process was based on fuel efficiency, EPA and CARB certification, plus performance and affordability.

Also, availability and accessibility to real consumers was considered, so both limited-market EVs and super-expensive vehicles like the Tesla Model S were eliminated (though we wonder why the Ford Focus electric didn’t make the cut).

The Green Car of the Year competition has been going for a decade -- the first award was dished out at the 2005 LA Auto Show. In keeping with that tradition, we’ll have to wait to report on the winner until the end of November. So be sure to check back to see our coverage of the LA Auto Show and to see which car is worthy of being called the greenest car of the year.

Tesla Motors Inc.’s new Autopilot features are a step toward the self-driving cars of the future. For now, though, drivers must keep their hands on the wheel.

Most of the time.

In a 20 minute test-drive last week, a Model S with the operating system that’s being rolled out to owners of newer Teslas competently handled Interstate 280 — the curvy venture capital superhighway that connects San Francisco to San Jose.

Drivers engage the lane-keeping feature that Tesla calls Autosteer by double-pulling on the cruise-control stalk. A blue Autosteer indicator appears on the instrument panel, and he or she sets the ideal speed and the distance they want to maintain behind the car in front. It switches off when the driver takes control of the steering wheel.

To change lanes: Turn on the blinker, and the vehicle does the job of physically moving to the adjacent lane.

But if there’s an accident, Tesla says the human behind the wheel is liable.

“The hardware and the software are not yet at the point where a driver can abdicate responsibility,” Chief Executive Officer Elon Musksaid Wednesday during an event with journalists at the company’s Palo Alto, California, headquarters. “That will come at some point in the future, but it’s not the case today. These are still the early days.”

The technical capabilities have raced out ahead of regulatory and legal systems — cars can drive pretty much drive hands-free, but Tesla, like Mercedes-Benz, Honda and other carmakers, can’t allow it, because of liability issues.

“The technology is waiting for regulations to catch up — and not just on a national level but internationally as well,” said Thilo Koslowski, an analyst and automotive practice leader at Gartner Inc.

Requiring drivers to keep their hands on the steering wheel is also a safety net for automakers, he said, because it means that the human driver can intervene as needed, such as if a sensor failure causes the system to shut off. Not letting consumers ignore the road completely “reduces some of the excitement” about the technology, but it’s an important stage in its development, he said in an e-mail.

“It takes time for consumers to trust the technology,” Stephanie Brinley, an analyst with IHS Automotive, said in a telephone interview. “It took a long time for people to become comfortable with adaptive cruise control.”

Tesla started equipping the Model S with hardware — radar, a forward-looking camera, 12 long-range sensors, GPS — to enable the autopilot features about a year ago. The hardware now comes standard on the Model S, as well as the recently released Model X sport utility vehicle. Retrofitting older Model S sedans would be tricky.

Musk said Tesla can probably develop acompletely self- driving car in about three years. Though fully autonomous vehicles would likely require additional sensors and 360-degree cameras, as well as regulatory changes to address liability issues.

“I think Tesla will have a car that can do full autonomy in about three years,” said Musk. “Maybe a bit sooner, but I am trying to recalibrate my time predictions. I’m confident that in three years, the car will be able to take you from point to point — like from your driveway to work — without you touching anything. You could even be asleep the whole time, and do so very safely. But getting regulatory approval for full autonomy will vary by jurisdiction.”

On Thursday, Model S owners who got Tesla’s 7.0 software through an over-the-air update were already downloading it. James Hilden-Minton of Atlanta was installing it while at work and said he plans to try the Autopilot features on his commute home.

“My commute is about 12 miles of surface streets, stop and go, 40+ minutes,” he said in a Twitter message. “Very tedious, so I value” Autopilot.

Introduced on March 31, the 1951 Plymouth Cranbrook Belvedere arrived as a two-door pillarless hardtop. It was Plymouth's first vehicle of such design and was built in response to Chevrolet's Bel Air. That vehicle, the first two-door hardtop in the low-priced American market, was introduced in 1950 and ended that model year with great success.

The Cranbook Belvedere was not a separate model. Rather, it was the specific name only used for the two-door hardtop version of the Cranbrook. Being built on that car's 118.5 in (3,010 mm) wheelbase gave the two-door Belvedere very favorable proportions. Powering the Belvedere was the familiar flathead straight-6 engine. Displacement was 217.8 in3 (3.6 L), the compression ratio was a relatively low 7.00:1, and output was 97 hp (72 kW) (SAE gross). First-year prices started at US$2,114.

1957 would be a banner year for the Chrysler Corporation, and Plymouth was no exception. Plymouth's design was so revolutionary that Chrysler used the slogan "Suddenly, it's 1960!" to promote the new car. The Belvedere line once again included the Fury. This year a new 277/292/309/320 in3 V8 with dual four-barrel carburetors was the standard engine in the Fury, and it was available on all Plymouths.

For fashion-forward automobiles, matte is the new black. So it’s not too surprising to see newly SoHo-based Cadillac get hip with the times by adding a low-luster finish for the ATS-V coupe and sedan, as well as the CTS-V sedan. The three are now offered as a Crystal White Frost Edition.

As the name implies, the White Frost Caddys feature matte-white paint that’s exclusive to this model. All three also come with the contents of the Luxury and Carbon Fiber option packages; special-finish wheels complete the look.

The Crystal White Frost Edition ATS-V sedan retails for $71,460 (before options), a $2400 premium over an ATS-V sedan with the same equipment but more ordinary livery. For the ATS-V coupe, the figure is $73,660, or $2K above what you’d pay for a more plainly painted version. For the Crystal White Frost Edition CTS-V, the ask is $94,990—although again, don’t be shocked to see dealers drive up the bottom-line price with additional options. The White Frost premium here, though, is only $1000.

The CTS-V also will be the rarest of the bunch, with only 29 built. That’s against 31 ATS-V sedans and 39 coupes. (As with any high-fashion item, seeing the same thing elsewhere sends the coolness factor plummeting.)

The concept, based on a fantasy race car conceived for the Gran Turismo video game, was co-developed by Nissan and Polyphony Digital, the creators of the Playstation racing simulator.

Though the car originally debuted at the 2014 Goodwood Festival of Speed, it will receive minor re-tweaks for its Tokyo reveal. Gone is the dark silver paint, traded in for a vivid red hue Nissan calls Fire Knight. The grille has been revamped as well, now bolder and with the V's arms extending into the bodywork. This so-called V-motion grille has been propagated throughout Nissan's production car lineup from the Murano to the Maxima.

Supposedly, the 2020 Vision Gran Turismo is a hint at what the next generation Nissan GT-R will look like. Realistically, the body work will probably be not quite so extreme. Rumor has it that it will be powered by a twin-turbo V6 mated to a hybrid system -- the same setup as their Le Mans car -- that can generate 1,250 horsepower.

The Tokyo Motor Show begins October 28.

The 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE 450 AMG Coupe is an SUV that feels like a sports car. A cruiser that can pounce. Basically it's the most versatile accessory since the black t-shirt, according to the folks who built it. All we know so far is it looks like an X6 and comes with an options catalog longer than Santa's "naughty" list.

While this vehicle has the bulbous build of a crossover, Mercedes says "occupants are led to believe that they are in sports rather than off-road mode." If the high ride height confused you about that, just look at the gaping air intakes and steamroller wheels with up to 22" of bling. It all says speed,man.

The biturbo three liter V6's output has been posted at a fairly hair-raising 362 horsepower and 384 lb-ft of torque on tap from just 1,400 RPM. Curb weight and fuel economy are still secret.

BMW's boosted six-banger of the same displacement in the X6 can only crap out 300 horsepower and 300 lb-ft of torque, "so suck it" (is what I read between the lines of the Mercedes media briefing).

The GLE AMG Coupe's engine is mated to a 9G-TRONIC nine-speed automatic transmission, which is once again a bigger number than BMW's equivalent offering which has a paddle-shiftable eight-speed.

4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive with a 40/60 front-to-rear power split transfers energy to the wheels. The powertrain can be cycled through Comfort, Sport, Sport+, Slippery, and Individual modes with a rotary control on the center console.

These modes basically adjust power distribution to create an experience indicated by their title, and Individual allows "personal preferences for engine control strategies" to be pre-selected. Not sure how much good that would actually do you though; it's not like the car's going to let you write a better fuel map than what Stuttgart's engineers could come up with.

The GLE Coupe's human-machine interface also adjusts with the vehicle's mode; Mercedes describes the gauges in Comfort as "relaxed" while the Sport and Sport+ dials take on a more aggressive look.

Engine sounds are augmented. Oh yes, that means fake noise, which is enhanced in the Sport modes "especially when downshifting." But Mercedes is keen to stress that this car, SUV, crossover, or whatever the hell you want to call it will yield a genuinely engaging driving experience. All the sporting pretensions you want with the headroom to wear the stovepipe hat you so desperately can't be without, remember?

The vehicle stands at 192.9" long, 78.9" wide, and 68.1" tall with a 114.8" wheelbase. It goes on sale late this summer, with what we're promised is a terrifically long list of color and aesthetic trim options and an unbelievably long list of safety features.

No, really, there are a lot. Ready? Deep breath:

ESP® Curve Dynamic Assist and Crosswind Assist, COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST PLUS, DISTRONIC PLUS with Steering Assist, PRE-SAFE® Brake with pedestrian detection, BAS PLUS with Cross-Traffic Assist, Active Blind Spot Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist and PRE-SAFE® PLUS, a Parking Package with 360° camera and Active Parking Assist with PARKTRONIC. And of course MAGIC VISION CONTROL which disappointingly has nothing to do with tribal ritual but rather is Mercedes-Benz's heated, adaptive windscreen wiper system. We can discuss what the rest of those mean and if you need them in the comments.

As for the name, which would be GLE 450 AMG 4MATIC Coupe; remember that all Mercedes SUVs are "Gsomethingsomething's now. G is still the (in)famous G-Wagen. GLA is the tiniest "SUV" in the line. GLC is the slightly-less tiny one formerly known as GLK.

Now GLE being the old M-Class, or ML-Class if you like, the GLE Coupe must logically be the equivalent of an E-Class Coupe in the M-Class range, now known as the Gxx range. Duh.

The Damage of the Euro Diesel Scandal : News

Only one out of four vehicle owners think favorably of Volkswagen this week, in the wake of the brand’s diesel emissions scandal.

It’s yet another indicator that the brand, which saw three out of four opinions favorable before scandal, faces a long, tough road to earn back consumer trust. Even the companion VW Group automaker Audi, which used the affected engines in one of its models, the A3, has seen its reputation plummet, to 29 percent now, versus 69 percent previously.

The figures are from the California market-research firm AutoPacific, and based on a survey of 500 U.S. vehicle owners.

It’s all due, of course, to Volkswagen’s admission, two weeks ago, that it cheated on U.S. emissions tests, with the installation of a software-based “defeat device” that allowed VW’s so-called Clean Diesel TDI four-cylinder engines to emit up to 40 times the nitrogen oxides allowed by the law.

Volkswagen faces fines, class-action lawsuits, and investigations from many other governments. And as such, it’s a bit different than any safety-related recall, or a quality issue, and difficult for some consumers to see the situation as anything but intentional deceit.

Sales stopped, as have the Clean Diesel cheers

The automaker has stopped selling the affected vehicles, yet it argues that the vehicles are safe to drive (and that might not even be true if you have pollution-based public-health concerns).

For the brand, the results are catastrophic, as they’ve made some loyal legions of buyers incensed and remorseful. Prior to the diesel scandal, three out of four owners had a positive opinion of Volkswagen; in the wake of the scandal, as owners of affected vehicles wait for VW to announce a fix (and reimbursement scheme).

“Volkswagen was a tremendous catalyst in the marketing of diesel engines as being clean and fuelefficient,” said Ed Kim, AutoPacific’s VP of industry analysis. “Their marketing efforts over the past several years not only improved consumer opinions about the performance of diesels in the U.S., but also sold consumers on the environmental friendliness of their vehicles.”

AutoPacific found that about 80 percent of respondents classified the issues as “a big deal,” while only eight percent thought that it would lead to the demise of the diesel market in the U.S.

A significant portion of consumers do however think that the emissions issue is less severe than GM’s ignition-related recalls and Toyota’s accelerator-related issues of recent years.

Volkswagen and Audi combined were on track for having 87 percent of the U.S. diesel passenger-car market; and for those two brands combined, diesels made up 17 percent of total sales in 2014. Monthly sales returns for September are already showing a hit for VW, with the brand’s overall sales about flat versus last year as some rival brands report double-digit gains.

Are there more vehicles part of the scandal?

Consumers are leery that the announced vehicles aren’t the only ones affected by the deceptive engineering. Among the respondents, 64 percent thought that in light of this issue, they don’t trust Volkswagen, and the same percentage believe that other automakers are using defeat devices on their diesels.

Even 55 percent thought that some gasoline vehicles are affected by such devices.

VW’s reputation will likely make a reasonable recovery after this issue is properly addressed. But will those buying habits return to the same levels of diesels? And will the brand have the same level of trust? That’s all a bit harder to imagine.

The law of conservation of energy states energy cannot be created or destroyed. This law is the basis of how regenerative braking systems on vehicles like the Toyota Prius and F1 cars work. Instead of letting that energy go to waste, the heat created by braking is then transferred back into electrical energy and stored in a battery pack – later used to power electrical accessories or electric motors. This recent video released by Toyota shows just how much energy an F1 car stores from regenerative braking after one lap around the Circuit de la Sarthe.

The TS040 normally uses the energy saved from regenerative braking to power its electrical motor, but in this video, that energy is used to generate the heat needed to make breakfast for 171 people – that’s one cup of coffee, a half slice of toast and one-third of an egg. Pretty amazing when you consider Kazuki Nakajima – the first Japanese racer to take pole position in the 24 Hours of Le Mans – only made one simulated lap around the 8.469-mile track. It is an interesting video that really puts things into perspective as far as energy loss goes. The video isn’t quite as interesting as some, but it’s certainly worth a look. Enjoy.

Honda’s dealers have been pleading for an exciting, sporty car ever since the demise of the S2000. It appears their pleas have not gone unnoticed as Honda is working on a new sports car to help fill the void.

Earlier in the year patent drawings filed by Honda for a mid-engine sports car concept hit the web. They confirmed that Honda was at least considering the car. Now, Auto Express has managed to dig up some details on a production version.

According to the British mag, the car will arrive on the market in calendar year 2018 and feature styling remarkably similar to the concept version shown in the patent drawings, just as Acura’s NSX supercar stayed true to the lines of its own series of concepts.

A hybrid powertrain is planned, though rather than adopt the Civic Type R’s 2.0-liter turbo engine for the internal combustion component as previously speculated the new Honda sports car is now expected to come with a 1.5-liter turbo. Working with an electric motor, peak output should come close to 300 horsepower.

There will reportedly be some Formula One-inspired technology too, most likely in the powertrain department since Honda’s currently serving as an engine builder rather than a constructor in F1. Unfortunately, we also hear that there won’t be an open-top version, so it shouldn’t really be considered a successor to the S2000. This makes sense as the new Honda sports car will likely be more expensive than the S2000.

As touched upon in the intro, part of the reason for launching the car is to mollify U.S. Honda dealers who, unlike their counterparts in other markets, don't get a halo car. The NSX is sold as a Honda outside the U.S., but as an Acura here (and also in China).

Given that American focus, it perhaps wouldn't be surprising if the car was built alongside the bigger model in Ohio. That's reportedly one option Honda is considering, along with the Yokkaichi, Japan, plant that currently builds three mid-engined models—the S660 sports car, and Vamos and Acty vans.

Dodge unveiled a host of new options in 1955, but the 1955-1956 Dodge D-500 was arguably the most powerful -- Dodge offered an extra-cost "Power Pack" for the hemi-four-barrel carb and dual exhausts adding 10 horses. With it, the hemi was officially (and clumsily) called the "super-powered Super Red Ram," but soon became known simply as the "D-500" option.

The Dodge D-500 returned for 1956 on a hemi stroked out to 315 cubic inches. Larger valves, mechanical lifters, reprofiled camshaft, and higher compression (9.25:1) gave it a mighty 260 horses, close to double the maximum power Dodge had offered just two years before. A two-barrel, 218-bhp version of the Dodge D-500 came standard on Royal and Custom Royal. Coronets retained the poly at a slightly more muscular 189 bhp.

Dodge's mild 1956 face-lift brought higher, finned rear fenders to all models, which now included V-8 Lancer four-door hardtops in each series, including the Dodge D-500. As on other Chrysler makes, control of the optional Powerflite automatic changed from the chromed corporate dashboard wand of 1955 to the soon-to-be-infamous pushbuttons.

Highland Park went more heavily into high-performance limited editions for 1956, issuing the new Plymouth Fury and DeSoto Adventurer to supplement the follow-up version of the hairy Chrysler 300. Little appreciated is the fact that Dodge had a similar special, the Golden Lancer. This was basically a Dodge D-500-equipped Custom Royal hardtop coupe with Sapphire White and Gold Gallant Saddle paint; gold-colored dash, windshield, and door moldings; and patterned white/gray/black upholstery. Production is unknown, even to Chrysler, but was doubtless minuscule.

Equally rare was "La Femme," a new-for-1955 trim package offering umbrella holder, makeup case, and a dazzling pink-and-white exterior in a patronizing nod to women buyers typical of the age. The 1956 La Femme kept most of milady's accessories, but the colors changed to Regal Orchid over Misty Orchid. Limited to the Custom Royal hardtop coupe -- and available with the Dodge D-500 option -- it sold fewer than 1,500 copies through 1956 (estimates range from 300 to 1,100), after which it was tastefully withdrawn.
