Hydrogen-powered BMW i5? : News

BMW is reportedly preparing to introduce its third i-Series model with a hydrogen fuel-cell powertrain.

Despite lingering doubts surrounding hydrogen's viability in the automotive market, fuel-cell development progress by Honda and Toyota is pulling BMW and its German rivals into the arena, unnamed company sources have told Autocar.

The allegation does not come as much of a surprise, as BMW and Toyota have been jointly developing fuel-cell technology for the past few years. The collaborative agreement aimed to merge existing technologies from both automakers, including fuel stacks and tanks, to create a common fuel-cell system by 2020.

Mercedes-Benz early this year confirmed plans to launch a new hydrogen-powered B-Class in 2017, using a drivetrain jointly developed by Daimler, Renault-Nissan and Ford. Audi, meanwhile, is set to introduce the A7 Sportback h-Tron Quattro fuel-cell concept this week in Los Angeles.

BMW has not yet confirmed any details surrounding the rumored fuel-cell vehicle, which is expected to be called the i5.
