The world’s first production-ready flying car, which transforms from an automobile to a plane in just several seconds, has been unveiled to the public in Vienna by its Slovakian inventors.

The presentation of AeroMobil 3.0 took place at the Pioneers Festival in the Austrian capital of Vienna on Wednesday.

“Really, I dedicate of this topic practically 25 years and I started really in garage with my father and with my brother and we made several projects, several prototypes, and now it's time that we can present the real concept,” AeroMobil co-founder and CTO, Stefan Klein, said.

The AeroMobil 3.0 transforms from a car to a plane by unfolding its wings, which are located behind the cockpit where the rear seats in an ordinary car would be.

The compact vehicle is designed to be able to drive in road traffic and fit into a standard parking space.

The flying car requires a paved or grass strip of around 250 meters to take off, and just 50 meters to land.

Powered by a Rotax 912 engine, it can reach speeds of up to 160 kilometers per hour on land and 200 kilometers per hour in the air.

The AeroMobil 3.0 runs on standard automobile gasoline and can be re-fueled at any petrol station.

The fuel consumption stands at 12.5 kilometers per liter while flying, and 15 liters per hour while driving.

A pilot’s license would be required to fly the car, which has all the safety features present in other airborne vehicles – including autopilot, avionics, and a parachute deployment system.

The vehicle "has behavior as normal plane, is fantastic in air, and very nice on the earth. And as here I said, my idea was because I wish I was connected with emotion, with passion, with freedom, and present now an object that can open connection between people,” Klein said during the presentation.

The flying car has been successfully tested in the air. However, Klein and his business partner, Juraj Vaculik, say they aren’t taking orders yet, because a standard production process still needs to be perfected.

When the AeroMobil 3.0 finally goes on sale, it will cost less than a small plane, but more than a speedy sports car, according to the inventors.

Porsche has its own ideas, but if you ask us, an all-wheel-drive 911 on steroids would look a lot like a BMW X6. An X6 M, to be precise.

When the first generation of this slant-backed beast arrived five years ago alongside its platform-mate, the X5 M, the duo marked departures from several formerly sacred principles of BMW's M GmbH. These Ms were not only SUVs, they used a torque-converter automatic, all-wheel drive, and a turbo. Earlier prohibitions against these attributes were swept aside because, well, the M division resides in the peaceful village of Garching, just north of Munich and within shouting distance of BMW's headquarters. And on the upper floors of that four-cylinder-shaped building, the execs like numbers on the balance sheet: Big, fat, black numbers.

Nonsensical as it seemed to outside observers, the X6 M became wildly popular with customers. Imposing, loud, and fast, it was about as politically correct as a Hummer H2 and less useful. But it was fun to drive. Now it is back. Based on the just-launched second-generation X6, it has become a better car in virtually every respect. Just look at its heart: The 4.4-liter twin-turbo V-8 gets a boost to 567 horsepower and a whopping 553 lb-ft of torque, up 12 hp and 53 lb-ft. It also gets a new eight-speed automatic transmission and launch control. The numbers are great, as expected: BMW says zero to 60 mph takes a mere four seconds flat, top speed is governed at an entirely sufficient 155 mph.

What customers may appreciate more often is the 20-percent improvement in fuel economy, at least as measured in the European cycle. If mirrored in U.S.-market EPA tests, the combined rating could rise from today’s 15 to as high as 18 mpg, a figure that won't win any more respect at your natural foods co-op. Still, it's nice to go farther on a tank of fuel, no?

X6 M buyers—and those of the new X5M, which debuts at the same time—may also notice the sound. “The exhaust system has been modified to satisfy the sporting ambitions of the new M models,” says BMW, as if the previous model’s exhaust note were somehow insufficiently loud.

The skillful engineers of M GmbH have modified the chassis extensively to match this X6's awesome power. The front control-arm suspension and the independent rear suspension have been stiffened and lowered to allow higher cornering speeds. Standard 21-inch wheels wear 285/35 front and 325/30 rear rubber. A high-performance braking system is in charge of stopping about 5000 pounds of metal in the shortest possible distance. Judging from our impressive experience with a regular V-8–powered X6, the M model must be a stunning performer on twisty roads and even on the racetrack.

Inside, the X6 M comes with uplevel appointments and plenty of "M" cues. These include specific instrumentation, sportier seats, and customization features offered only on the M models. And outside? The changes are extremely successful at expressing successful extremity. From the large, functional air intakes to the “air-breather” vents aft of the front wheels, the vertical rear reflectors, and those four exhaust pipes you can't miss, the X6 M is probably the most impressive and cleanest-looking X6 of all.

It's yours for $103,050. And until Mercedes-AMG or Porsche comes up with its own coupe-like SUV variant, the X6 M remains in a class of one.

The recently merged Fiat Chrysler Automobiles empire has ambitious plans for growth, and it's going to need some big bucks in its coffers in order to enact them. Part of that cash injection is coming from the floating of its IPO on the New York Stock Exchange, but now FCA has announced a further capital campaign to be based on the enormous asset that is Ferrari.

FCA's board of directors has just approved the separation of Ferrari from the rest of the group as a separate entity. Once that separation is complete, Ferrari will put 10 percent of its shares on the stock market "in the United States and possibly a European exchange" as well.

This isn't the first time that the idea of a Ferrari IPO has been raised. Sergio Marchionne, chief executive of Chrysler, Fiat and Ferrari (pictured above), first raised the idea four years ago. Former Ferrari chairman Luca di Montezemolo nixed the idea, but now that he's been discharged, it appears there's nothing to get in the way of Marchionne's desires.

The remaining 90-percent stake in Ferrari will be distributed among FCA's existing shareholders, of which the largest (at over 30 percent) is the Agnelli family's Exor investment company headed by Fiat chairman John Elkann.

San Francisco industrialist Sterling Edwards was enamored with sports cars. Rather than assemble a stable of Europe’s finest; however, he was convinced that America could build a model that would compete with the best of them. The result was the Edwards R-26, a Ford-powered, tube-frame sports racer, very successful in its early seasons.

His second venture, the Edwards America, aimed at a more sophisticated audience. Coachwork was fiberglass, in a quasi-Italian idiom, built on a Mercury chassis with Cadillac or Lincoln V-8 power and Hydra-Matic transmission. By the time it reached market in 1954, however, Chevrolet’s Corvette was in full swing and Ford’s Thunderbird was in the wings. Just six Edwards Americas were built.

Believed to be the second Edwards America built, this car was originally owned by Robert Miller of San Francisco. Lincoln-powered, it was subsequently owned by Fred Hoffler. In the early 1970s it had suffered fire damage, was refurbished and sold to Richard “Tiny” Williams in Florida. At Tiny’s passing, the car was inherited by his son in Ontario, Canada, from whom the current owner acquired it in 2000.

A striking car, it shows some age, particularly on the paint and brightwork. The brown leather interior is very good, as is the matching carpet. The handsome varnished wood dashboard has Stewart Warner gauges and an AM radio. Michelin whitewall tires are mounted on Kelsey-Hayes chrome wire wheels. Reminiscent of the Cunningham coupes of the 1950s and taking cues from Virgil Exner’s Chrysler show cars, the Edwards America personifies elegance on wheels.

The 2014-'15 Ford Focus Electric car starts at $29,995, including an $825 destination charge, reflecting a $6,000 price cut, Ford spokesman Aaron Miller told Edmunds on Tuesday.

With a $7,500 federal tax credit, Miller said car shoppers can now get a Focus Electric for $22,495.

"We've cut the price for two reasons," Miller said. "It puts the Focus Electric at a very competitive price point and we wanted to give consumers another reason to buy it."

The 2014 Focus Electric is on sale now at all Ford dealerships, with the 2015 Focus Electric set to go on sale later this year.

This marks the second time Ford has slashed the price of the Focus EV. In July 2013, Ford cut the price by $4,000.

Miller said Ford has sold 1,500 Focus Electric cars through September of this year.

"We're on pace to have the best sales year ever for the Focus Electric," he said.

The 2015 Focus Electric will get some exterior and interior updates, but no mechanical changes.

"It will have a more sporty and dynamic look," Miller said.

The interior will add more knobs, so consumers have a choice between more traditional items and the MyFord Touch system.

The key rival of the Focus Electric is the 2014 Nissan Leaf.

The Focus EV has an EPA-rated range of 76 miles between charges.

You can make many inferences about Crosstrek equipment and specs by looking at the 2015 Impreza which will arrive at Planet couple months ahead of the Crosstrek. For example, we expect to see more sound insulation and upgraded interior materials appear on the Crosstrek because these improvements are scheduled on the Impreza.

Years ago, Subaru called its high-riding, rugged Impreza model the "Outback Sport." When introducing the all-new Impreza in 2012, Subaru took a year off from offering a beefed-up version. For 2013, Subaru introduced the Crosstrek--an Impreza-based compact crossover with more ground clearance, moderate off-road capability, more equipment, and a tougher appearance than the Impreza.

Subaru has been building and studying the performance of this generation Impreza since it was introduced in calendar year 2011 and the Crosstrek since it was introduced in calendar year 2012. When making changes, they evaluate all the data they have gathered, including customer feedback, warranty claims, and crash tests looking for tweaks that will improve performance and reliability.

You won't see huge changes in the 2015 Crosstrek, but we expect you will be able to tell the difference both inside and out.

The first supercar from a country with a proud motoring tradition. When you think about it, it’s kind of odd that no supercars come from Argentina. It’s the country that gave us Juan Manuel Fangio, Alejandro de Tomaso and Horacio Pagani, three towering automotive legends. But another Argentine F1 driver, Clemar Bucci (of Fangio’s era), had hoped to change that, and began work on a new supercar which would bear his name. Bucci passed away in 2011, but the project has moved forward, and will soon debut.

The roofless car is powered by a 7.3-liter AMG-sourced V12 which sends its 600 horsepower though a Pagani-built six-speed transmission. The car will debut at the Buenos Aires Motor Show which kicks off this week. We unfortunately don’t know a whole lot more about the car, other that the fact that the company is still in the hands of the Bucci family. We’re eager to see if the car makes it to other markets, to say nothing of how much we want to see what it can do.

The Luce name had traditionally been applied to larger Mazda rear wheel drive luxury sedans, until a coupe variant was developed in 1969. Styled by a partnership with the Italian design firm Bertone, the attractive a smartly styled coupe looked more European than like anything in Mazda’s line. Initially the Luce was available in one of two four cylinder models: a 1500 or 1800. The most attractive variant, the coupe differed from the sedan due to its use of a 1.3 L rotary engine driving the front wheels (the only front drive rotary Mazda). With front disc brakes and 126 hp, the R130 was quite the performance bargain, if you could find one. Although not a limited edition car, it was rare, with only 1,000 or so cars produced through its run of four years.

Wankel rotary engine development had been going on at Mazda since the early 60’s and was used on sportier cars. The Luce coupe was the perfect platform, coming in two models. The broad appeal of it’s European styling meant that it sold well in Japan in the few export markets it was available in where it was sometimes called Mazda Bertone 1500 or 1300. Although not a limited edition car, it was rare, with only 1,000 or so cars produced in its production run of 5 years.

The European influence continued inside with a wood steering wheel and a fully instrumented dash. Other nice touches included declinable bucket seats, lockable glove compartment and retractable radio antenna. The no nonsense Japanese efficiency of the interior worked well with the Italian flair, making the Luce something of a performance and luxury bargain compared to all the Alfas and Fiats of the world.

Technically the R130 was technically advanced, no doubt showcasing the emerging Japanese company’s technical abilities. The Luce R130 set the stage for future high volume Mazda rotary powered coupes like the RX4 of the 70’s and the legendary RX7. The Luce range continued up to 1990, being sold as the Mazda 929 in the United States. The immediate successor to the R130 called the R1800, was one of Mazda’s first cars sold to the US market in 1970. It was a flop here, but sold well in Europe.

Meister of Nurburgring, for the last time before his sudden demise, left his finger mark on the design of this car that Toyota Motor Corp. unveiled in Tokyo Motor Show, 2011. The car we are talking about is GRMN Sports Hybrid Concept. And those who have yet not recognized the Meister, he is no one but legendary test driver of Toyota Hiromu Naruse. GRMN Sports Hybrid Concept is also the second incarnation of MRS/MR2 layout vehicles, discontinued in 2007. With midship engine, all-wheel drive and distinctly different power-train, the car is a new chapter in MS/MR2 series. Naruse-san himself test-drove the car and tuned its design. GRMN is nothing but Gazoo Racing car tuned by Meister of Nurburgring.

The Powertrain
The new car is continuation of MRS/MR2 engine layout. However, Toyota tried to make it a completely new car in every other sense to give more stability, road grip and power. Let’s have a look under the hood:

Engine: The concept model sports V6 engine with 3.5 liter capacity instead of ZZ series aluminum engines, common with defunct MR-2 cars. New engine yields 247 horsepower. Besides the gas-fed (petrol) engine, the concept vehicle sports an electric motor which drives the front wheels. Vehicle got hybrid tag because of this electric motor. It draws power from battery.

Transmission: GRMN Sports Hybrid is an all wheel drive. Similar to the MR2 tradition, gas-fed engine drive the rear drive axel with separate transmission system. For front wheel, it has front axel mounted electric motor.

HPs: V6 generates 247 horsepower or 183 kW of energy. This might not sound very big for a V6. However, along with the electric motor, total power generation reaches 299 horsepower or 220 kW.

Toyota designed the concept car with more carbon fiber to make it lighter yet strong and this is the reason it weighs only 1500 kg or 3,300 lb. Besides the weight, vital statistics of the car goes like:

Height – 1.2 m
Wheelbase – 2.57 m

The car sports 225/40R19 tires in the front and 255/35R19 tires in the rear wheels.

What’s new?
1. All-wheel drive with a midship engine is common. But Toyota used an electric motor on front axel, which is a new concept. The motor drives the front wheels in tandem with the midship engine. The concept lowers energy loss in differential common in transmission of mid-engine AWD.

2. V6 engine has replaced ZZ engines, common in MR-2 series. ZZ engines were low capacity. V6 produce more horsepower. Besides the added power, this engine gives more stability too.

3. All-wheel drive design more traction and comfort while cornering. This is more helpful in surfaces with less traction.

What’s refreshing?
1. Major refreshment is of course the engine. Unlike ZZ engine, V6 yield not only more power but also takes less space compared to inline engines. Considering the space shortage in 2-seater sports coupe and power thirst, Toyota rightly chose the V6.

However, the gas-fed V6 in the hybrid concept does not give more than 247 horsepower to the wheels. This is not much impressive since V6 are capable of generating more. Along with the electric motor, the car produces maximum of 300 horsepower.

2. MR-2 series was mid-engine rear wheel drive. Toyota designed the new car as all-wheel drive with completely new power-transmission. Different torque at front and rear wheel makes the car more stable at higher speed. Benefit is more visible while cornering on loose traction surfaces like snow, sand etc.

3. The second incarnation of MR-2 series has completely redesigned body work. Curvy aerodynamic lines and air-vents for engine cooling are the most visually attractive features of the concept vehicle.

Price & availability
Toyota has announced nothing yet on pricing and date of commercial launch. However, considering the innovative design it seems they are serious. The concept vehicle ran on 24 Hours Nurburgring track. This implies Toyota is serious about the commercial viability and success of the concept. Meanwhile, we can remain only hopeful of laying our hands on it.

The 2015 model will have 401hp and 354 lb-ft of torque going to the rear wheels. It’s not particularly light, but decent by electric car standards at 3,362 lbs. Venturi claims it can hit 60 mph in 4.5 seconds and go all the way to 137 mph. More importantly, it can travel an impressive 155 miles before needing to recharge and has a 22kw on-board charger that can recharge it in 3 and a half hours. Only 25 of these Americas will be built for 2015, so get in line now. No word on cost as of yet, but we hear it will push into the six figure range.

Something new appeared on Super Bee engines for 1969: a Ramcharger Air Induction System that forced colder, denser outside air through the carburetor, selling for $73 (standard with the Hemi engine.) Gathering even greater publicity was the Super Bee "Six Pack" option, consisting of a trio of two-barrel Holley carburetors feeding a 440-cid V-8, all hidden beneath a pinned-down, flat-black fiberglass hood.

Priced at $463 above the $3,138 hardtop base figure, the Six Pack delivered 390 horsepower, along with a brawny 490 pounds/feet of torque. That was sufficient to permit 0-60 mph acceleration times of 6.3 seconds or so. Strangely enough, an ordinary 383-equipped Bee could handle the job in less time: as little as 5.6 seconds as reported by Car and Driver.

Nearly all of the 10,849 R/Ts built in 1968 were Magnum-powered; a mere 230 had the Hemi, whose days were numbered. In 1969, fewer than half as many Hemis went under R/T hoods, as production shrunk to 7,238.

Price was part of the reason, since the Hemi added $604.75 to an R/T's cost. Super Bee figures tell a similar story. Of the 27,846 built for 1969, only 166 had a Hemi installed.

Both the Coronet R/T and Super Bee hung on for one more year. Although overshadowed at the end by Chargers and the winged if seldom-seen Daytonas, the final Coronets proved themselves to be true dual-purpose machines.

Serving as subdued family transportation most of the time -- just like their Coronet Deluxe and 440 brethren -- with the proper drivetrain on tap they were also able to turn into Mr. Hyde with a hard slap at the gas pedal. For both traits, they'll be fondly remembered.

Surprisingly, former General Motors CEO Dan Akerson all but broke that rule last year when he openly admitted he wanted to see the Opel Cascada cross the pond and land in the United States with a Buick emblem on the grille.

The executive's statement fueled wild speculation about what is shaping up to be Buick's first convertible since the two-seater Reatta was axed in 1991 after a very brief production run. Rumors, industry whisperings and spy shots suggest the Cascada will land here in time for the 2016 model year but Buick and Opel have resorted to automotive omertà.

What is it?

Introduced in Frankfurt last year to replace the Astra Twin Top, the Cascada has a Spanish name, a German passport and American genes. It rides on a modified version of the Delta II platform that also underpins the Chevrolet Cruze, the Chevrolet Volt and the Buick Verano, among others.

The Cascada is noticeably bigger than its compact predecessor. It stretches 184 inches long, 72 inches wide and 58 inches tall, dimensions that make it about the same size as the Verano. It's rather portly at 3,750 pounds in its lightest configuration - for the sake of comparison the Verano tips the scale at 3,300 pounds.

In Germany, the base Cascada is powered by a 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine that sends 140 horsepower to the front wheels via a six-speed manual transmission. Buyers after a more frugal engine can select a 165-horsepower 2.0-liter turbodiesel called CDTI in Opel-speak.

Additional engine options that are available when the range-topping trim level is selected include a twin-turbocharged evolution of the CDTI that produces 195 horsepower and a familiar direct-injected 1.6-liter Ecotec turbo four that makes up to 200 horsepower.

The model tested here is powered by the less expensive 1.6-liter Ecotec mill that generates 170 horsepower at 4,250 rpms and 206 lb-ft. of torque at 1,650 rpms, enough to send the Cascada from zero to 62 mph in a claimed 9.9 seconds. Buyers can choose between a six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed automatic controlled by shift paddles.

Life Aboard

The center console, the dashboard and the instrument cluster were all carried over from the Golf-fighting Astra hatchback with only minor modifications as far as aesthetics go. However, the Cascada serves as Opel's de facto flagship and the company made a conscious effort to ensure the interior reflects the car's positioning.

Upholstered in Brandy-colored leather (an optional extra), the seats strike an ideal balance between comfortable and supportive. Many of the plastics feel top notch, while soft-touch materials and gloss black trim on the center console and on the dashboard help create a premium ambiance. Astra drivers would feel right at home in the Cascada but they would be surprised by how much nicer everything feels and looks.

Being a fairly large car, the Cascada is roomy enough to carry four average-sized adults in relative comfort, at least when the top is down. It goes without saying that head room is compromised when the top is up but two adults can cram in the back for short trips if needed.

Infotainment is not one of the Cascada's strong points. The IntelliLink system is not particularly user-friendly and it takes a lot of getting used to, especially because the center console seemingly has more buttons than the cockpit in your average trans-Atlantic airliner. Additionally, the display for the rear-view camera is black and white which is a little difficult to accept in a vehicle that is billed as a premium halo car. Frankly, we've seen better infotainment systems in economy cars that cost a fraction of the price of the Cascada.

The Cascada offers 12.4 cubic feet of trunk space with the top up and 9.9 cubic feet with the top down. The rear seats fold down to clear up a fairly generous amount of cargo space, meaning you can make a run to Home Depot with the wind in your hair.

Speaking of wind, the three-layer top is well-sealed and wind noise is reduced to perfectly acceptable levels when the top is up. A button located between the seat opens the top in 17 seconds and closes it in 19.

On the Road

Quiet and smooth on all road surfaces, the Cascada is a refined all-arounder that is one of the best topless daily drivers out there. The transmission shifts with an exceptional smoothness when left in drive and the car is stable enough on the highway to make 80 mph feel like 50.

Sport mode is engaged by pushing a button on the center console. It stiffens the suspension, modifies the throttle response, tells the automatic transmission to hold each gear longer, makes the steering more responsive and adds red lighting around all four analog gauges. Sport mode doesn't completely transform the Cascada, it doesn't become a track car by any means, but it makes it more enjoyable to drive on twisty back roads.

The 1.6-liter turbo four provides instant response thanks to its broad torque curve, and the Cascada feels like it takes a lot less than 9.9 seconds to hit 62 mph when you really put the pedal to the floor. With a light right foot we averaged about 30 mpg in a mixed driving cycle.

All Cascadas regardless of trim level come standard with the HiPerStrut suspension system that is also found in other members of the Opel lineup as well as select Cadillacs and Buicks. The system reduces torque steer but it largely fails to live up to its promise of improving the steering response. While the Cascada is easy to maneuver around town and comfortable to drive at normal speeds, the steering lacks feel once the pace picks up. Granted, it's more of a touring car than a sports car but there is a definite lack of connection between the driver and the road, it's missing that little something that turns a comfortable car into a driver's car.

Leftlane's Bottom Line

It's no secret that convertible sales are on the decline but that doesn't mean it's time for automakers to pull stumps and abandon the segment altogether. There are plenty of sun-worshippers out there who want to go topless without spending big bucks or getting a loud engine with a large displacement.

In that regard the Cascada ticks many of the right boxes. It certainly isn't a sports car but it provides a satisfying, wind-in-your-hair driving experience while remaining practical enough to use on a daily basis.

After bitter courtroom battles and a brutal stare-down of dealership lobbying groups across the country in a bid to establish a unique (in the auto industry) direct-to-customer sales model, it looks as if Elon Musk has blinked first, if his comments on Autoline Detroit last week are to be taken at face value.

“We may need a hybrid system,” explained Musk, in answer to an Autoline question about scaling up his fledgling car company. “… a combination of our own stores, and some dealer franchises.” (emphasis mine).

If it happens, it would be a stunning turnaround for both Tesla Motors and Elon Musk, who have built a rabid following and loyal customer base in part because of its radically different approach to selling cars and the transparency and customer access afforded by the lack of a franchisee/middle-man. So much for a "Free Market," America.

If it seems to you that everyone and their cousin wants to get into the hypercar game, you're right. We see new supercar startups popping up all the time. Some make it to production and some don't, and while it may be too soon to render verdict on this latest project, we hope it's one that comes to fruition.

The company is called Trion Supercars, and its bid for high-speed glory is called the Nemesis. We first reported on the project back in the spring, but a few more details – and a handful of additional images – have surfaced, whetting our appetites and giving us a clearer idea of what to expect.

Targeted squarely at the likes of the Bugatti Veyron and Koenigsegg Agera, the brief for the Trion Nemesis calls for a 9.0-liter, twin-turbo V8 driving around 2,000 horsepower through an eight-speed sequential transmission to all four wheels. If Trion does its considerable homework, that should be enough to propel it to its anticipated top speed of 270 miles per hour, reaching 62 in 2.8 seconds.

Trion Supercars aims to have the first prototypes – being built by California-based coachbuilder N2A Motors – ready by February, after which it plans to build 50 units at over $1 million apiece starting in at the beginning of 2016. We wouldn't be surprised to see that cost inflate by the time it reaches the road, though, joining similar world-beating hypercar projects like the Hennessey Venom F5 and SSC Tuatara in the high-speed pipeline.

The DKW 3=6 was a compact front-wheel drive saloon manufactured by Auto Union AG. The car was launched at the Frankfurt Motor Show in March 1953 and sold until 1959. It was also named as the DKW Sonderklasse and, following the factory project number, as the DKW F91. From 1958, by which year the car’s successor was already being sold and the earlier version had therefore become, in essence, a ‘run-out’ model, it was badged more simply as the DKW 900.

Apart from complications involving its naming, the 3=6’s notable features included its two-stroke engine and front-wheel drive layout along with the sure-footed handing that resulted.

In a market segment increasingly dominated by the Volkswagen Beetle, the Auto Union contender also boasted class leading interior space, especially after the arrival of the four-door version, which featured a modestly extended wheelbase.

The DKW 3=6 in due course replaced the DKW F89 / Meisterklasse, although the Meisterklasse remained in production until April 1954. In its turn, the 3=6 was succeeded by the more powerful Auto Union 1000, offered already from 1957.

Many Names
DKW was one of four companies that had come together in 1932 to form the Auto Union based in Zwickau. The company was effectively refounded in West Germany in 1949, following the loss to the Soviets of its Zwickau assets.Three of the four businesses that had constituted Auto Union before the war seemed unlikely ever to reappear on either side of the Iron Curtain, but starting in 1949 the DKW name was used for the F89 assembled by Auto Union in the west: this was the model replaced by the 3=6.

The name ‘Sonderklasse’ differentiated the car from the previous model which had been known as the ‘Meisterklasse’. Both names had also been used for commercially successful DKWs in the 1930s. Sonderklasse is a German verbal concatenation that does not translate comfortably into English: it is based on the word ‘Sonder’ of which one translation is ‘special’, linked to the word ‘Klasse’ which translates as ‘class’, or category’.

The name ‘3=6’ started out as an advertising slogan, but by the time of the 1955 face lift, the name was to the fore, and the car was advertised as the ‘Large 3=6’ (Grosse 3=6) differentiating it from the earlier version which already carried the script ‘3=6’ ahead of the door on its left side. The point of the advertising slogan was to highlight an equivalence between the car’s two stroke three cylinder engine and a four stroke six cylinder engine. The underlying logic was that with the two-stroke cycle there is engine power produced by an explosion within each cylinder for every rotation of the crankshaft: with the four-stroke cycle there is power produced by an explosion within each cylinder only for each alternate rotation of the crankshaft. Thus it was asserted that the two-stroke engine was working twice as hard per rotation of the engine. In terms of torque the two-stroke system does indeed appear to have conferred substantial benefits when compared to a four-stroke engine of similar size, but in terms of bhp much of the theoretical energy gain in terms of power output seems to have been dissipated as additional heat which in turn required a larger energy consuming cooling fan, all of which made the arrangement rather noisy when placed just ahead of the driver and front-seat passenger.

The name F91 was the factory project number of the car. ‘F’ stood for ‘Frontantrieb’ (Frontwheel drive). The F91 was an evolution from the DKW F9 which had been a prototype presented in 1938, planned for production at Auto Union’s Zwickau plant from 1940. By 1950 the F9 itself had been made production ready and was being produced as the IFA F9 in Zwickau, so that name was in practice not available to ‘old’ Auto Union’s western successor. The DKW F91 was replaced by the F93 followed by the F94, their names also taken from factory project numbers. Because the other names have proved increasingly unfathomable, the names F91, F93 and F94 are the ones commonly used retrospectively.

It was perhaps in recognition that any perceived marketing advantages available from the unconventional namings had been exhausted, that from 1958 the car was sold simply as the DKW 900, the name being now conventionally based on the car’s approximate engine displacement. The successor model, already in production in 1957, also benefited from this less challenging nomenclature.

The Bodies
The F91 was presented as a two-door saloon with front opening doors which presumably facilitated access. A ‘pillarless’ coupe version, first seen in 1953, was produced from 1954, as well as a cabriolet, bodied by Osnabrück coach builders Karmann. In addition there was a three-door estate version, called the ‘Universal’, which continued to be offered unchanged until June 1957, by which time saloon buyers had been offered the F93, an upgraded version, for two years.

Modifications came progressively. The coupe version had been launched with a ‘panoramic’ three piece wrap around back window, and in the back end of 1954 a similar wrap-around back window appeared on the two-door saloon. Advertising highlighted such features as a fuel gauge and an interior light that could be set to come on automatically when the door was opened.

1955 saw the launch of the F93 version, also known as the Grosse 3=6. This shared the 235-centimetre (92.5 in) wheel-base of the F91, but was slightly longer, wider and taller. The track was also increased by 10 centimetres (3.9 in). In place of horizontal metal slats, the new model featured an oval shaped front grill containing five horizontal metel coloured slats. The oval grill was modified again in 1957 when the slats were replaced by a chrome coloured grid design. Inside there were improvements to the instrumentation and the heating.

The DKW Monza which appeared in 1956 was essentially a DKW F93/F94 under its (light-weight plastic) skin.

In 1957, with the introduction of the F94 version of the car, a four-door version finally became available. The four-door saloon’s wheel-base was extended by 10 centimetres (3.9 in) over that of the two door: advertising continued to emphasize the DKW’s class leading interior spaciousness. 1957 was also the year when the F91 ‘Universal’ estate version was upgraded to an F94: it now incorporated many of features introduced two years earlier on the saloons.

DKW In South America
Auto Union cars were also very popular in South America, where a number of special types based on the DKW 3=6 were manufactured in Brazil under licence by VEMAG from 1956 to 1967. Models sold were the DKW Belcar sedan, the Vemaguet station wagon, and the Fissore, a two-door coupe with a smooth designed body and elegant appointments, which resembled in general terms the DKW F102. The F94 line made by DKW-Vemag was equipped with doors hinged at the front (from 1964) and four headlights (in 1967). Altogether about 109,343 cars were built in Brazil.

DKW vehicles were also made in Argentina from 1960 through 1969 by IASF S.A. (Industria Automotriz Santa Fe Sociedad Anónima) in the city of Sauce Viejo, Santa Fe. The most beautiful are the Cupé Fissore when had many famous owners (Julio Sosa, César Luis Menotti and others). Other important models are the Auto Union 1000 S (21.797 Sedán made until 1969), the Auto Union Combi/Pick-up and the Auto Union 1000 Universal S (6.396 made until 1969, too). The last version of the Auto Union Combi/Pick-up launched in 1969, survives few months and after, IME use the cabs for this model.

The 896 cc three cylinder engine provided at launch a claimed 34 bhp (25 kW). Following the company’s pioneering work in the 1930s, the car had a front-wheel drive configuration which meant there was no bulky driveshaft running through the passenger cabin. The water cooled engine was installed longitudinally above the front wheels, but the radiator was located not ahead of the engine but between the engine and the passenger cabin.

The gearbox, controlled by a column mounted lever, was a three speed manual system coupled with a free-wheel device: in Autumn 1953 a four speed box was offered as an option. 1957 saw a further transmission advance with the availability of a Saxomat automatic centrifugal clutch on the DKW.

The F93 version launched in 1955 now boasted power output increased to 38 bhp (28 kW). That increased further to 40 bhp (30 kW) in 1956. The F93 also incorporated a strengthened chassis and improvements to the suspension and braking system.

The 4RS was released back in 1990. At first, it could only pack 260 horsepower, though engineers managed to increase it by 40. To do that, they had to remove some of the components such as the muffler and the converter. The result – a beautiful Porsche 911 Carrera 4RS Lightweight which used a flat-6 engine that could reach a top speed of 300 horsepower. The cars were produced in a limited number, thus making the 4RS a rare Porsche car. There was an action in 2009 that sold a Carrera 911 4RS for $139,000.

Porsche is without a doubt one of the world’s most renowned car manufacturers. Every car made was special in one way or another, and while the company did have some struggles over the years, it still managed to stay on top. Whether you’re absolutely in love with a design911 car model or you’d rather go for a GT or Speedster, Porsche will certainly exceed all your expectations. In spite of a rather high price, these vehicles are brilliantly made and worth every penny.

Ukrainian importer paired with a Chinese manufacturer of long harnessed with the title that Geely GX7, then Emgrand X7. In the second version, by the way, and stopped. Concept cars debut all the time that are from European carmakers that consumers in the US never expect to see cruising the streets. We also know that most of the cars we see as concepts making the car show rounds will never see production. One of the cars that made the rounds that looked cool, but many thought wasn't that likely to see the roads was the Opel Monza concept.

While some of the more outlandish styling cues, like the massive gull wing doors, are unlikely to make it to market, apparently the Monza in some form is destined to cruise the streets of a city near you. The big catch is that it might not be as an Opel model alone, it will be as a Buick in the US as well.

Opel chief Karl-Thomas Neumann has said that when you next see the styling of the Monza it will be as an Opel Insignia. The Insignia will be sold in the US as the next Buick Regal. The Regal needs some style and excitement; it hasn’t really been cool since the late 80s in Grand National form.

The chances of the next Regal being something akin to the Grand National are slim, Buick is more interested in luxury buyers than performance fiends. I'd wager many of the interesting design elements of the Monza concept will never see the light of day. Those gull wing doors are very unlikely to make it to production, as I mentioned before, and the wild dash and seats on the inside are unlikely to see production. The Regal is expected to hit the US around 2017.

The 1964 Pontiac Catalina "2+2" was only available in a 2-door hardtop-coupe or convertible configuration and had a 119" wheelbase. They were all front engine and rear wheel drive vehicles. The standard engine was the 389 c.i. V8, with 2-bbl carburetor producing some 283hp and a manual 3-speed transmission with a floor shifter mounted in the center console. 

The optional engines were the 389 c.i. V8 with 3-2bbl carburetors (Pontiac's infamous Tri-Power setup) producing some 330hp and the 421 c.i. V8 with 4-bbl carburetor producing some 320hp (plus a few "specially tuned" 421's with up to 370hp were rumored to be produced as well) and an optional Hydramatic, automatic transmission or 4-speed manual transmission were available. Since 1964 was the first year, the "2+2" was basically a "trim" option with special badging including "2+2" on the front fenders, hood and interior. Also some interior upgrades like special door panels, "Morrokide" bucket seats up front and center floor console with vacuum gauge were standard or available options.

For 1965 the Pontiac Catalina "2+2" had a facelift and it's wheelbase increased to 121" which improved handling characteristics. It would also become the most popular and sought after version of all the "2+2's" made. The front fenders capped and were "cut-back" just below the upper headlamp and now contained vertical louvers or "gills" situated behind the front wheel-openings.

The interior upgrades for the "2+2" again included the bucket seats, full carpeting, floor console, special badging and outside had custom pinstriping and special hood and rear deck "2+2" badging and under the hood they had chromed valve covers and air-filter housing. According to AutoExpress interview with Kia Designer Tom Kearns, the Kia GT4 Stinger concept, unveiled at the Detroit Motor Show, could be on sale by 2016 and be priced under £30,000.

The GT4 Stinger’s designer, Tom Kearns, told Auto Express: “It’s a total concept, but when we do these cars we have in the back of our minds that if we decide to make it, we don’t have to change it too much.”

According to Kearns, the two areas that are most likely to change are the radical LED light stack and the innovative see through A-pillars. “The gaps in the A-pillars aren’t symmetrical so it works well from the driver and passenger seat,” he said. “Pillars are getting bigger and bigger by requirement – it’s a big problem, so we looked for a solution.”

When questioned about a potential price for the GT4 Stinger, Kearns said: “We’re looking at the Scion [Toyota GT-86] and [Subaru BRZ], and even the Mazda MX-5 – true enthusiast, affordable cars. Pricing has to be fitting for a Kia – it’s a value brand”

The GT4 Stinger concept sits on a rear-wheel drive platform and features a 311bhp turbocharged version of Kia’s 2.0-litre T-GDi. If it makes production, it’s likely to use a platform from within the Hyundai-Kia Group, possibly from the Hyundai Genesis Coupe.

Kearns also said that he hoped the shape wouldn’t change too much: “I’d love it to be like this,” he said. “It looks sporty and muscular without looking like an angry transformer. We have a new version of our signature grille – a face with a simplicity of design”

And, according to Kearns, other versions could be on the cards: “I’d be okay with a convertible version. What do you think?”

Detroit SP:01 Electrified : Videos

The delayed Detroit Electric SP:01 electric sports car is heading toward production, with a U.S. on-sale date set for early 2015, the company said on Friday.

A new YouTube video provides a glimpse of the production-ready SP:01.

The video provides "a hint of the final exterior design of the company's new vehicle," Detroit Electric said in a statement. Detroit Electric will relaunch its Web site in late October with updated information about the SP:01.

The SP:01 is an open-topped two-seater built on a Lotus Elise platform. The car completed "successful prototype testing in June this year," Detroit Electric said.

There is no confirmation yet of model-year designation or whether the estimated price still remains around $135,000.

The startup automaker also said that all of the cars will be manufactured in a "new, dedicated Detroit Electric production facility in Leamington Spa, England."

Earlier, the company scrapped plans to build its Detroit Electric SP:01 in Michigan and said it will manufacture the vehicle in the Netherlands.

Detroit Electric provided no update on another new model (a sedan) that was to be engineered, developed and assembled in Detroit.

The Detroit Electric brand was revived in 2008 by Albert Lam, former CEO of the Lotus Engineering Group and executive director of Lotus Cars of England.

At last year’s Frankfurt Motor Show, Maserati revealed the special Quattroporte Ermenegildo Zegna Edition. Now the Italian marque has done the same with the Ghibli and released the Ghibli Ermenegildo Zegna Edition at the Paris Motor Show 2014.

Built around the standard Maserati Ghibli S Q4, the Ghibli Ermenegildo Zegna Edition features a plethora of upgrades in the cabin as well as a special shade of paint. This colour is dubbed Azzurro Astro and it is complemented by a special set of 20-inch Urano wheels finished in Liquid Metal. The aluminium pigments used in Azzurro Astro add a special sense of depth to the paint work.

It is the interior however where the collaboration between Maserati and Ermenegildo Zegna becomes immediately apparent. Across the seats, extra fine grain natural colour leather is utilised alongside contrasting light grey stitching. This is matched to a central silk insert with a micro-chevron weave of vertical rolls on the central seat and backrest area, within which the central roll, with leather piping on the sides, features a special macro-chevron weave.

The door panels feature Zegna silk Jersey and a diagonal roll pattern. This same luxurious material is used for the 2015 Maserati Ghibli Ermenegildo Zegna Edition’s roof lining, pillars and sunshades. Elsewhere in the cabin, glossy carbon fibre is featured on the central transmission tunnel and areas of the door panels.

Powering the Maserati Ghibli Ermenegildo Zegna Edition is the same twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V6 engine as the regular Ghibli S Q4 model. This powertrain delivers an impressive 410 hp and 550 Nm of torque and can accelerate the car to 100 km/h in just 4.8 seconds and a top speed of 284 km/h.

In the 1950s, Giovanni Moretti was serious about producing custom Italian racecars and he became king of the 750cc class with the 750 Sport and 750 Gran Sport models. They used a special twin-cam engine which was completely designed inhouse. Like all his products, these were the result of high craftsmanship and lightweight engineering which produced some of the smallest competition cars on the market.

Based in Turin, Fabbrica Automobili Moretti SpA was a small firm, but one that could take advantage of all the ateliers in the area. Initially Moretti produced a 4-cylinder overhead cam engine of his own design in 1950 that was intended for a series of Sedans, Cabriolets and Station Wagons called Giardinettas. Eventually a Sports model was offered which used the same engine, but with a twin-overhead camshaft design that produced around 60 bhp.

The potent twin-cam was installed in a custom tubular chassis then sent out to one of the many competent body shops in the area. Typically bodied in aluminum, these were either equipped with a spider or Berlinetta body, the later being penned by Giovanni Michelotti. Depending on bodystyle around 100 mph was possible.

Moretti would design and fabricate almost any design provided he could get the money upfront to produce the car. Very few were ordered outside of Italy, but Ernie McAfee had the intuition to order several Gran Sport Berlinettas into California.

Routinely, Morettis raced in the many of the small Italian hill climbs and local events in the 750cc class. They were entered in many Mille Miglias and the 1956 24 Hours of Le Mans where both cars failed to finish.

The Chevrolet Impala will be making its way to Sin City, albeit a tad darker and meaner looking. Debuting at the 2014 SEMA show, The Chevrolet Impala Blackout Concept builds on the tasteful styling, and adds a healthy dose of, well as the name suggests, black.

Every accessory shown on the Impala Blackout Concept is available from Chevrolet. The basic, but very handsome look starts with the deep black exterior paintwork. A black grille surround has been added, as well as painted mirror covers which, you guessed it, are black. Black and aluminum wheels add the right amount of contrast to the concept, and a black Chevrolet bow tie gussies up the Impala just enough. Like James Bond before a hand at poker.

The interior is also blacked out, and completely leather trimmed with custom plates, sport pedal kit, and wire mesh pattern stainless steel sills. The Impala Blackout is also outfitted with the 11-speaker Bose Surround Sound System, featuring Chevrolet MyLink.

The Impala Blackout Concept features the available 3.6L, 305 horsepower LFX V6, providing just enough grunt to match the lunar looks. Watch for the Impala Blackout Concept next month at the SEMA show in Las Vegas.
