Mercedes-Benz SL400 : Current Models

Mercedes-Benz has quietly unveiled the SL400 on its U.S. website, which will now the most affordable way to get into an SL-class on this side of the pond. Under the hood of the 2015 Mercedes-Benz SL400 is a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V6 producing 329 hp and 354 lb-ft of torque and mated to a seven-speed automatic transmission. These are figures that just a couple generations ago could only be had in the V8-engined AMG version of Stuttgart's flagship roadster.

The price of entry is now $84,925, which is a full $22,900 cheaper than the $107,825 starting price of Mercedes-Benz SL550. The SL500 is powered by a 4.7-liter twin turbocharged V8, and offers 100 hp and 162 lb-ft of torque more than the SL400. The V6-engined SL400 can make the sprint from 0 to 60 in 5.1 seconds, compared to the 4.5-second time offered by the SL550.

This won't be a poverty-spec model, however, as many of the same options are available in the SL400 as in its pricier siblings. The Premium 1 Package, which includes Parktronic with Active Parking Assist, a rearview camera, ventilated seats, the AirScarf neck-level heating system, massage seats, a hands-free trunk closer, and Keyless-Go, can be had for an additional $4,900. The SL400 will also be offered with a $2,950 Driver Assistance Package that includes Distronic Plus, Pre-Safe automatic braking, lane keeping assist and blind spot assist. Standard features include heated leather seats, GPS navigation, and a Harman/Kardon audio system. The roadster will also offer the Splitview front-rear entertainment system for an extra $1,000 and the dimming Magic Sky Control SPD-SmartGlass electro-transparent roof for an extra $2,500.

The SL400 can be ordered starting this month, just in time for autumn's cooler weather (where available).
