2015 Maserati GranSport : Concept Cars

A replacement for Maserati's tough GranTurismo coupe appears closer than ever this week, with reports that CEO Harald Wester has confirmed a 2015 debut.

Porsche's 911 will reportedly get a new rival not long after, with Wester understood to have confirmed earlier talk of a new 'GranSport' coupe.

Speaking with Britain's What Car?, Wester said the successor to the GranTurismo will become more of a 2+2 coupe (with the barely-there backseats common to the format) rather than a genuine four-seater.

The reported 2015 launch date will make the current GranTurismo around eight years old by the time it bows out.

As for the much-hyped 911 rival - the so-called GranSport - Wester confirmed only that a second sports car is in the works, but did not offer details.

Earlier reports suggest the coupe will utilise an enlarged version of the mid-enged composite chassis of the upcoming Alfa Romeo 4C - which Maserati is also expected to build.

While the 4C concept uses a 235kW 1.75 litre four-cylinder turbo engine, the GranSport will reportedly feature a Ferrari-developed turbo V6.

Reports elsewhere this week point to a new and very high-end coupe that will sit above even the GranTurismo as a new flagship model, offering more power, more luxury and more exclusivity.

Whether Maserati will build all or only some of these models remains to be seen, but with a new Quattroporte, the smaller Ghibli sedan and the Levante SUV on the way, the carmaker's plate could soon be overflowing.
