Wiesmann Shuts Down... Again : News

Wiesmann has shut its doors for good after years of manufacturing bespoke, BMW-powered sports cars.

The company first encountered financial issues in 2009 when a planned expansion fell at the same time as the global recession of that year. Ultimately, Wiesmann filed for bankruptcy protection last year, and despite coming up with a plan to save the brand and its 125 employees, AutoExpress says a buyer for the company after it kept on incurring debt.

Wiesmann started out in 1985 as a firm that manufactured hard-top roofs for convertibles. A few years later, it expanded into building bespoke sports cars with retro styling and powertrains derived from BMW’s M division. Currently, Wiesmann’s most powerful model is the GT MF5, a fiberglass-bodied coupe powered by a twin-turbocharged V8 engine from the BMW X5 M.
