Volkswagen Golf R Evo : Concept Cars

Volkswagen is planning to debut the 370 hp Golf R Evo Concept at the upcoming Beijing Motor Show sources have confirmed.

First reported by AutoCar, the Golf R Evo Concept will be one of the most powerful Golfs ever produced (the Golf Design Vision GTI concept is the most powerful with 500 hp). In order to achieve such a boost in horsepower, the EA888 engine used by the standard Golf R has been tuned with a brand new cylinder head and induction system.

Total output is now reported as being 370 hp and 322 lb ft of torque.

All this power will be transferred through a six-speed dual clutch transmission and Halex multi-plate clutch four wheel drive system. The concept is also said to extensively utilize carbon fiber and other weight saving materials in its body panels in order to bring the total curb weight to just a hair over 3,000 lbs.

Also interesting to note is that the man behind Mercedes’ recently released 355 hp 2.0-liter four cylinder engine — Fritz Eichler — is also the man behind the new Golf R Evo Concept.

Speaking to AutoCar, Eichler said he had no doubts that 400 hp could be coaxed out of a turbocharged four-cylinder engine in the next few years. That is news that bodes well for Golf fans.
