VW Recalls 3,837 Jetta Hybrids To Replace Gearbox Oil : News

Volkswagen’s low-volume Jetta Hybrid sedan is being recalled to replace faulty gearbox oil that can put the vehicle in a “stall-like” condition, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said today.

The Jetta Hybrid comes with a seven-speed dual dry clutch transmission -- basically, an automated manual transmission that is shifted electronically with fast-acting electronic solenoids and actuators.

Jetta Hybrids manufactured from October 2012 to October 2013 have additives in the transmission oil that can leave deposits inside the transmission. NHTSA says those deposits can cause some of the gearbox’s internal electrical components to corrode, short out and make the car feel like it is stalling.

VW says 3,837 Jetta Hybrid models in the United States are affected.

The latest recall is part of 1.6 million VW vehicles worldwide recalled earlier that feature the seven-speed dual dry clutch transmission, a VW spokeswoman said today.

The loss of power could increase the chances of an accident, NHTSA says. Volkswagen dealers will change the gearbox oil.
