1959 Tojeiro Jaguar : Classic Cars

This is the unique 1959 Tojeiro Jaguar, which retired at Le Mans and Goodwood that year. Following Gregory's massive accident at Goodwood, the carwas not immediately repaired. The remains were eventually sold by Ecurie Ecosse to a Dr Bothwell. He also acquired a many spares from John Tojeiro, which included a bonnet and spare chassis. Passing through various hands, the remains and the additional components eventually arrived at restoration specialists Crosthwaite & Gardiner during the early 1990s. John Tojeiro himself inspected all the major components and agreed that they were either from the car as crashed at Goodwood or made in period by Tojeiro or in the case of the front end by Williams & Pritchard.

Crosthwaite & Gardiner set out restoring the car with the help of former Ecurie Ecosse mechanic Stan Sproat, who had built the car in period. It was first raced by Lynx Engineering's John Mayston-Taylor at an Aston Martin sprint meeting, fittingly at Goodwood. Handling better than it ever did in period, it duly won its class. Soon after, the car joined the superb Dick Skipworth collection of ex-Ecurie Ecosse competition cars. He has since had the car, fitted with a 3.8 litre XK engine, raced extensively and very successfully in historic events. The car's most prolific and successful driver over the years has been Barrie 'Whizzo' Williams. In Skipworth's ownership, the Tojeiro Jaguar has competed in all 16 editions of the Goodwood Revival.

Along with the rest of his collection, he has now decided to part with the unique sports racer and it has been consigned to Bonhams' 2013 December sale. The pre-sale estimate is GBP 300,000 - 500,000.
