2013 Chevrolet Corvette 427 Convertible : Current Models

Chevy has confirmed that the 2014 model year will bring an all-new, seventh-generation Corvette. Until then, though, the bow-tie brand has put together a special Vette with a big-ass engine, as well as a paint-and-tape package to celebrate the nameplate's 60th birthday.

Big Engine, Big Sky
The number in the Corvette 427 convertible's name pretty well sums up the car. It's a Corvette convertible with a 427-cubic-inch—or 7.0-liter, in modern parlance—engine under the hood. Actually, the engine's massive 7008-cubic-centimeter displacement converts to 427.7 cubic inches. While that rounds up to 428 cubes, Chevrolet calls it a 427 for nostalgic purposes to pay homage to the 427 big block that powered Vettes back in the day. Today's "427," called the LS7, has until now only been available in the Corvette Z06 coupe. It loses no power for its installation in the 427 convertible, meaning it'll offer 505 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque. A six-speed manual transmission is the only available gearbox, and the driveline and rear axle are borrowed from the Z06, too. We hope the company has beefed up the rest of the convertible to handle the extra power, but the truth is that the regular 426- and 436-hp Vette convertibles have to be pretty sturdy already.

Many of the features that are either standard or available as options on the Z06 will be included on all 427 convertibles: Magnetic Ride Control, a trunk-mounted battery, special wheels (19-inchers up front, 20s in the rear), and Michelin PS2 tires. Carbon fiber is employed throughout the 427 convertible, including for the hood, fenders, and floor panels. As a result, Chevy says the Corvette 427 convertible weighs in at 3355 pounds—just 156 pounds more than a Z06 coupe.

The Paint and the Tape
The car you see in the pictures above also includes an optional 60th Anniversary package, celebrating the completion of yet another decade in the Corvette's life. That package will be available on all 2013 Corvettes. This scintillating cornucopia of options brings special "Arctic White" paint and a blue leather interior. From Chevy's description, it seems that designers have stuck "60th" logos anywhere they could. For further adventures in decoration, 60th Anniversary Vettes will be available with blue stripes running the length of the car—on convertibles, they'll travel up the hood and continue in stitched fabric over the roof. Seriously.

We'd caution you not to confuse the 2013 Corvette 60th Anniversary package with the 2012 Corvette Centennial Edition, which celebrated the 100th anniversary of Chevrolet. Commemorative editions are nice and all, but we'll admit to being more interested in the C7.

We first heard about Monaco’s Venturi Automobiles back in the early days of 2006, back when the company was first touting the benefits of zero-emission electric vehicles with the Tesla Roadster rivaling Fetish and unveiling wacky concepts like the Eclectic ‘autonomous energy’ vehicle.

Several years on, and with a few industry tie-ups in the bag, Venturi has announced plans to establish operations in the lucrative U.S. market. Venturi is partnering with Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio and plans to design, engineer and eventually manufacture electric vehicles on U.S. soil.

Venturi is still a small company, with only about 70 employees in total at its existing facilities in Monaco and France. Heading the new U.S. division will be CEO John Pohill, a man with over 30 years experience in the auto industry and previously held stints at Chrysler and General Motors.

Venturi picked Ohio State University as the company has already worked closely with the campus, building and testing the Venturi Buckeye Bullet high-speed electric vehicle.

The company’s latest creation is the America electric sports buggy concept, which made its world debut last year in Paris and has now been unveiled once again at this past week’s 2011 Detroit Auto Show.

The concept is equipped with the same 300 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque electric motor found in the Fetish and is described as a high-riding sports car. Such a design offers the possibility of venturing off the beaten track while still protecting the environment in terms of both noise pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.

Powering the electric motor is a 54 kWh lithium-ion polymer battery, which can see the vehicle run some 186 miles on a single charge.

Interestingly, Venturi isn’t the only European electric vehicle start-up planning to build cars in the Midwest. Norway’s Think has already established a manufacturing facility in Elkhart, Indiana for its City electric minicar.

Chief Executive Officer Sergio Marchionne said he is working “diligently” on preparing a possible share sale by Fiat’s U.S. unit Chrysler, as the company’s long-term goal is to own it 100 percent.

Chrysler last month filed papers to list shares held by a union-related healthcare trust on the New York Stock Exchange.

“We have filed, it’s a process we will work at diligently,” said Marchionne on a quarterly earnings conference call. “We are ready to execute the Chrysler IPO within 2013.”

But Fiat still wants to own 100 % of Chrysler, he said in reply to a question about whether his goal had changed.

Jay Leno's latest car review is not really a car. It's the 1914 Christie Fire Engine. It's one amazing piece of machinery because it's actually an adapted version of a horse-drawn cart where they got rid of the horse bit and installed an engine.

Solid rubber wheels, a clutch made from just one piece of metal and a top speed in the 25 mph area. Horses had been in the fire department for about 75 years when this machine was introduced and fireman actually didn't like the modern technology because it got rid of some of the romance and adventure.

The boiler on the back of this thing is just as interesting as the pulling head. It's not full of water that it pumps out. It's actually a vacuum pump that pulls water from a hydrant or a cistern and sprays it.

In Korea, Kia calls its flagship rear-wheel-drive sedan the K9. Figuring the name could meet derision and bewilderment in the United States -- among dog owners, anyway -- Kia considered using the car's puzzling overseas handle: Quoris, which we think is pronounced like Boris, or perhaps something with a vaguely French trill at the end. Kia split the difference with the forthcoming 2014 Kia K900.

Yet another addition to the automotive alphanumeric stew is disappointing from a company with memorable names like the Soul, Forte and Cadenza. Certainly it could have delved further into music-themed possibilities. The Kia Basso Profundo or Kia Keith Moon, perhaps?

Regardless of name, the 2014 Kia K900 promises to be a sportier edition of Hyundai's more patrician luxury sedan, the Equus. The K900 will likely offer a 3.8-liter V6 and a 5.0-liter V8, both joined to an eight-speed automatic transmission. And with exterior styling led by a former Audi chief designer, the K900 will be more visually distinct and aggressive than the Equus.

The K900 should also offer LED headlights, adaptive cruise control, a collision warning system, blind-spot detection, lane departure warning and a 360-degree-view monitor display. Many of these features could come standard and would not only reinforce Kia's priority on exceptional value, but also justify an anticipated base price between $50,000 and $70,000.

The 2014 Kia K900 is expected at U.S. dealers early next year. Check back for a full review of the K900, including specs, driving impressions and buying advice, as it becomes available.

Suzuki has revealed three concepts which will be showcased next month at the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show in Japan.

First up is the red Crosshiker compact crossover which is described as an alternative to the 2011 Regina concept shown at the same venue. It has the size of a compact car in a body that weighs just 810 kg (1,785 lbs) with power coming from a new three-cylinder, 1.0-liter engine.

The silver X-LANDER concept rides on the Jimny platform and has a four-wheel drive system while under the hood it gets a 1.3-liter engine linked to a newly developed automatically-controlled manual gearbox. The concept is actually a hybrid as it features an electric motor built onto the four-wheel drive system.

Lastly, the orange HUSTLER concept is a crossover which fits in the minicar segment and was designed for those who love sports and the outdoors. Suzuki plans on showcasing the concept also as a more stylish coupe but with the same "roomy, comfortable, and useful interior."

Lexus, Toyota and Acura top Consumer Reports' annual reliability survey, but a brand from General Motors and two from Europe have cut into the top 10.

Overall, Japanese brands took seven of the top 10 spots. All Lexus and Acura models earned an above average reliability score. All Infiniti, Mazda, and Toyota models were average or better.

The consumer magazine, whose annual ranking based on surveys of its readers are closely watched, says Audi has quietly been climbing through the reliability ranks. This year, it is fourth, up from eighth last year. The A6 sedan, Q7 SUV and Allroad wagon, all have "much better than average" reliability.

And under the heading of much improved, Volvo, the Swedish maker now controlled by a Chinese company, rose 13 places to finish seventh. GM made its mark with its GMC truck brand, which came in ninth. That was up from 12th last year. GMC wasn't the only GM stand-out, however. Buick climbed nine slots to 12th place, with Buicks except the V-6 powered LaCrosse, which is no longer in the lineup, rated average or better.

When it comes to terrible reliability, the new Ford C-Max Energi plug-in hybrid brought up the rear. The non-plug hybrid version was pretty lousy, too. C-Max was also the worst vehicle in J.D. Power's Initial Quality Study released earlier this year.

Not all Japanese models did well. The redesigned 2013 Honda Accord V-6 and the 2013 Nissan Altima are no longer recommended, having scored too poorly.

One of the key issues tripping up automakers in the survey continued to be balky electronics systems, especially in-car infotainment. CR says many of the systems are "buggy, with frustrating screen freezes, touch-control lag, or a reluctance to recognize a cell-phone, an MP3 device, or a voice command."

The year 1974 marked the dawn of a new era for the Ford Mustang. The OPEC oil embargo, coupled with an uncertain economy, changed the way consumers viewed driving. As such, Ford was forced to return to the drawing board. Its goal: create a new Mustang that would be both fuel efficient and capable of passing newly introduced emissions standards.

Lee Iacocca, President of Ford Motor Company, latched on to the project, coined the “Mustang II”. When asked about the challenges he faced in creating a new Mustang, he said, “All the 1974 will have to be is one thing; it will have to be a little jewel.”Of course, Iacocca was no stranger to the Ford Mustang. He, along with a team of designers and engineers, had created the first Ford Mustang back in the early 1960s. His first goal was to create a car that would boost sales. Mustang sales had been on the decline for some time. He also wanted to create a vehicle that could conform to new federal standards, such as the one that mandated bumpers be able to withstand a 5 mph collision without damage to the vehicle.

In addition to the vast hordes of Porsches and the occasional Ferrari Boxer, the 1982 24 Hours of Le Mans grid also had a pair of ChevroletCamaros numbered 80 and 81, which were entered by Stratagraph Inc. The owner of Stratagraph, an oil field services company, was Billy Hagan, a NASCAR driver from Louisiana. Co-driving the number 81 car with Gene Felton, a successful SCCA and IMSA racer, Hagan drove the car to 2nd in the GTO class and 17th overall while the number 80 car finished 19th overall.

Car number 81, the example on offer here, was built by Tex Racing Enterprises using a Dennis Frings chassis and was run by Hagan from 1982 to 1984. In addition to running Le Mans in 1982, the car won the inaugural GP Miami IMSA GTO Grand Prix in February of 1983, as well as the GTO Class (6th overall) at the Daytona 24 Hours in February 1984, driven by Billy Hagan and Terry Labonte. The car also won its class at the Sebring 12 Hours (driven by Hagan, Labonte, and Gene Felton) and placed 8th overall in March of 1984.

The car was then sold to sports car racer Chauncey (Jocko) Maggiacomo, Jr. in Poughkeepsie, New York, who then sold the car to Reynolds Aluminum engineer Hoyt Overbaugh, who raced the car several times from the mid 80s and into the 90s. This included outings at Daytona, Sebring, and Watkins Glen. Throughout this period, Tex Powell, owner of Tex Racing Enterprises, kept track of the car and continued to supply driveline parts. Overbaugh sold the car to its most recent owner who undertook an exhaustive restoration.

Tex Powell, the car’s original builder and Le Mans crew chief, was instrumental in the completion of the restoration, supplying many parts, many of which were from Hagan’s remaining stock for this car. Powell visited the car during the restoration and the car comes with a letter written by him in 2013 that corroborates the car’s history and remarks on the authenticity of the restoration and the passion and dedication of its owner. Every mechanical system was rebuilt or replaced, including correct 4-disc clutch, rebuilt magneto, rebuilt rear end, hubs, spindles, transmission from Powell, new fuel cell, and much more. The engine was completely rebuilt by Petty Enterprises and displaces 358 cubic inches.

The car has excellent racer cosmetics having been freshly restored and with test time only on it. The car’s Le Mans livery has been faithfully replicated with most of the graphics are hand painted, although some are stickers. The car wears the sponsorship of both Stratagraph and Jean Charles Chevrolet, the dealer in Paris that is still in business. The car wears powerful Marchal lamps appropriate for the Mulsanne straight at night, and lurid flares to cover the enormous wheels. The overall appearance is of a freshly restored racer that was done to similar standards as to when it was new. The interior is Spartan and function and features full Stewart Warner instrumentation. A modern fuel cell and fire system have been installed. The roll cage is a very serious affair, giving the impression of a tub frame car. The undercarriage is extremely clean, confirming that the car has not been used since its restoration.

The car comes with a variety of interesting documents including a February 1982 letter of acceptance to Le Mans from the Automobile Club de L’Ouest. There is also a letter from the same entity from July of 1982 thanking the team for their participation. There are also several prints of the car in action at Le Mans in 1982, as well as copies of the quick reference guide and rule book for the 1982 Le Mans race. There is also a congratulatory letter from Peter Schutz in which he expresses his admiration for the American team’s participation on the continent. A transcript of the letter from Tex Powell is also included with the car.

This is an extraordinary opportunity to acquire a truly historic American race car. A one off car, this example has illustrious history of success at some of the world’s great endurance races including Le Mans, Daytona, and Sebring. Additionally the car has a variety of interesting documentation, and has been authentically and freshly restored. Its known provenance for its entire life ensures that there is no ambiguity about its identity and it likely represents a fine investment as it becomes increasingly eligible for historic events as well.

The Cadillac CTS-V wagon is the sort of vehicle enthusiasts dream about and automakers rarely have the courage to build. With a fire-breathing 556 horsepower V8, an available manual transmission and a capacious wagon configuration, this a machine that certainly won't appeal to everyone but will strike some as the perhaps the finest mix of power, practicality and luxury currently on the market.

Mechanically identical to the CTS-V sedan and coupe, the Sport Wagon offers a little extra utility to go with its Eaton Twin-Series supercharged 6.2-liter V8. Pumping out the same 556 horsepower and 551 lb-ft. of torque as other CTS-Vs, the Sport Wagon offers both a six-speed Tremec manual transmission and a six-speed automatic. Currently, Cadillac does not offer a manual transmission in the standard CTS Wagon.

Both transmissions channel the power to the rear wheels, which take advantage of a limited-slip rear differential with a cast iron housing. Fuel economy, one of the car's few weaknesses, is rated at 14 mpg in the city and 19 mpg on the highway with the stick and 12/18 mpg with the automatic.

The CTS-V Sport Wagon is fitted with Cadillac's Magnetic Ride Control, which uses magnetorheologically controlled shock absorbers to respond quickly and precisely to changing road conditions. Brembo brakes - six-piston calipers in front, four-piston calipers out back - help bring things to a stop.

Inside, the CTS-V Sport Wagon is mostly a standard CTS-V affair, though it is distinguished by Obsidian Black accents on the dashboard and doors and optional Alcantara covering for the gear lever and steering wheel.

Naturally, the CTS-V wagon looks the part on the outside. Sharing the same basic body kit seen on the coupe and sedan, the Sport Wagon rides on 19-inch alloy wheels wrapped in Michellin Pilot Sport PS2 tires.

The coupe's Brembo brakes feature six pistons per caliper up front and four per caliper at the back. The front brakes were redesigned for the latest model year and feature a new two-piece that saves weight, offers greater resistance to warping and lengthens rotor life.

Standard equipment includes leather upholstery, heated seats, navigation, HID headlamps, Magnetic Ride Control and Brembo brakes.

Several options are available, namely a package with Recaro heated and ventilated front seats, polished 19-inch alloy wheels, "midnight Sapele wood" and a suede steering wheel/shift lever package.

Occupant Safety
All CTS models come standard with dual front, front side and full-length side curtain airbags in addition to traction and stability control systems and a tire-pressure monitoring system.

Key Competitors
As BMW has elected not to bring its M5 wagon stateside, the CTS-V Wagon's only competition is the similarly powerful, special order only Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG Wagon.

Buyers Are Back After Shutdown : News

The federal government shutdown kept some would-be car shoppers away from dealerships in the first half of October, but forecasters still expect U.S. auto sales to rise at least 12 percent this month.

The debt ceiling battle in Congress dinged consumer confidence and added to concerns lingering from September, when the industry broke a 27-month streak of consecutive gains.

Some dealers near Washington said last week that traffic still had not rebounded since the government resumed full operations Oct. 17, while others said they saw few effects from the 16-day shutdown.

"Whatever the reason, for us it's trending to be one of the better months of the year," said Jim Bone, dealer principal at Nissan Santa Rosa, 50 miles north of San Francisco. But Bone said business at his adjacent Kia store has been "off significantly" in October.

Forecasts call for October sales to be about 7 percent higher than in September, despite recent warnings by several auto executives that the shutdown could cause sales to fall this month. Hyundai Motor America CEO John Krafcik said Oct. 15 that demand could be 5 to 10 percent lower than in September.

Analysts from LMC Automotive, Kelley Blue Book and Barclays Capital said they think the industry's seasonally adjusted annualized selling rate would climb to an estimated 15.4 million, from 15.3 million last month and 14.4 million in October 2012. is forecasting a 13 percent increase and a SAAR of 15.5 million.

Automakers are scheduled to report October sales on Friday.

"It looks like the government shutdown ended just in the nick of time," Jessica Caldwell, Edmunds' senior analyst, said in a statement. "The week-by-week data suggest that consumers started to get jittery by the middle of the month.

"But with the government back to work, most lost sales should be made up in the latter half of the month, and the industry's momentum will continue the pace it enjoyed before the disruption in Washington." reported a 28 percent decline in daily sales in the first half of October, when more than 800,000 government workers were furloughed, compared with the first half of September. It called the drop "significant" and said state-by-state declines varied from 63 percent in Alaska, which has a high proportion of federal employees, to just 1 percent in Mississippi.

'Disruptive impact'
"There is no question that the federal government shutdown had a disruptive impact on sales," Mike Jackson, CEO of AutoNation, said during a conference call to discuss third-quarter earnings. "Business was very strong from August going through Labor Day, and once the prospect of the government shutdown became more certain it definitely was disruptive to sales."

Jackson said that traffic began picking up after the shutdown ended and that sales for the rest of the year should keep rising as a result of new products and continued pent-up demand from people who need to replace their vehicles.

"We'll have to wait until we announce our October results to see how that all worked out," Jackson said, "but I expect the increases we saw throughout the year will now resume in the fourth quarter."

LMC last week reduced its full-year retail-sales forecast by 100,000 units, to 12.8 million. Its forecast for total sales in 2013 is unchanged at 15.6 million, matching the projections by KBB and Barclays analyst Brian Johnson.

Through September, automakers sold 11.8 million vehicles, the most since a nine-month total of 12.4 million in 2007. Since the recovery began in 2009, the fourth quarter has accounted for slightly more than 25 percent of annual sales on average; a continuation of that trend would result in a full-year total of 15.7 million.

The homestretch
If 4th-quarter trends for the past 4 years hold, U.S. sales will reach 15.7 million in 2013. Some forecasts aren't that optimistic.

Congress still an issue
Jeff Schuster, LMC's senior vice president of forecasting, said he still expects sales to surpass 16 million units in 2014. But he warned that demand could take another hit from Congress early in the year.

"There is a higher risk that consumer confidence could be distracted again in the first quarter if, as expected, the debt-ceiling gridlock returns," he said in a statement.

Ford Motor Co. CFO Bob Shanks said the company is "cautiously optimistic" about the prospects for the U.S. economy. Although consumer confidence ticked lower during the shutdown, Shanks said, Americans have to some degree "become immune to everything going on in Washington."

Edmunds and KBB predict Toyota and Ford will report the largest gains among the eight largest automakers. Both expect General Motors, Hyundai-Kia and Volkswagen to lose market share with below-average increases.

Chrysler should report its 43rd consecutive year-over-year monthly increase, they said, though Edmunds expects the company's share to fall slightly.

The Merak was the result of Maserati’s decision to market a lower cost alternative to the V-8 Bora. Introduced at the Paris show in 1972, the beautiful Giugiaro-penned Merak shared most of its sheet metal with the Bora, the notable difference being a buttress treatment behind the cockpit as opposed to the Bora's complicated and costly clamshell engine cover. Cost was kept in check by utilizing a 3-liter, 190-hp version of the V-6 that Maserati had developed for (Maserati's then-owner) the Citroen SM. Similarly, the car's dashboard, steering wheel, transaxle, and hydraulic boosted steering and brakes were sourced from Citroen. The combination of a smaller V-6 riding in the Bora chassis allowed Maserati to nominally add a small pair of rear seats to the Merak.

This first generation Merak went on sale in the U.S. in 1974 and lasted largely unchanged through 1976. In 1977, the higher powered, 220-hp Merak SS appeared at U.S. dealers, and it can easily be distinguished from the previous car by its "SS" badging, front spoiler, flat engine cover, and an interior that disposed of all Citroen pieces in favor of those of the Bora. Some like the quirky Citroen influence of the early cars, but these later SS cars with Bora interiors tend to command a premium in the U.S. market.

Prospective owners should look out for body panel rust, cam chain issues, and thermal reactors on earlier U.S.-spec cars that might still conceivably carry this add-on emissions equipment installed. Compared to a Maserati Bora, the Merak represents a bargain for those looking to experience a mid-engined Maserati, and they are an attractive alternative for those looking to experience a 1970s Italian exotic that isn't quite as ubiquitous as the Ferrari 308.

For years, Europeans have ridiculed American buyers for their SUV addiction, but small-SUV sales are booming on the Continent right now. The new XV Crosstrek was conceived as a way for Subaru to capitalize on the trend, its tidy dimensions making it ideal for tight European roads. When U.S. dealers saw the XV, though, they loved it and convinced Subaru brass that it would be a hit with young urban families stateside. Here, it will be known as the XV Crosstrek.

Jesse James has called the Teutuls of Orange County Choppers fame “cake decorators,” alleging that their products are just flashy eye candy and not true customs. He might level the same barb at the XV’s engineers, as the model is really just a lifted Impreza hatchback with new bumpers, some fender cladding, and unique wheels. That’s the same basic formula Subaru followed to create the Impreza-based Outback Sport.

Mooom! He’s Stealing My Sales!
Subaru’s own Forester is 4.1 inches taller, 4.3 inches longer, and no wider than the Crosstrek; the latter’s success likely will depend on how many sales it can cannibalize from the former. The XV will cost a bit more than the Forester, but it will get better fuel economy from its 2.0-liter flat-four than the larger car sees from its 2.5. EPA figures haven’t been finalized—the car isn’t due in showrooms until the fall of 2012—but expect its ratings to be very similar, if not identical, to the Impreza’s. That car is rated at 25 mpg in the city and 33 on the highway with a five-speed manual and at 27/36 with the optional CVT. That’s quite a bit better than the Forester’s 21/27 mpg (of course, the turbocharged Forester gets even worse fuel economy, at 19/24 mpg).

The Crosstrek’s interior being identical to the Impreza hatch’s, it packs the same 23 cubic feet of cargo volume with the rear seats up. Here, the Forester has a clear lead, with 34 cubes. The larger car also betters the XV’s passenger space, with two more cubic feet up front and a significant eight more—49 to 41—in the back. Both the base Forester and XV boast 8.7 inches of ground clearance, or three more than a regular Impreza. Three inches make a big difference when fording the deep snow often found in Subaru-heavy markets such as the Northeast, the Northwest, and the Rocky Mountain states.

Yup: Like a Taller Impreza
As in the new Impreza, the XV’s flat-four is a letdown. With only 148 horses, acceleration is tepid. Plus, the XV transformation adds 50 to 100 pounds to an Impreza wagon. We expect a quarter-mile sprint of 16.8 seconds with the five-speed manual; add a few 10ths with the optional CVT. If the engine were a torque monster, you wouldn’t need to downshift to climb slight grades. But with 145 lb-ft at 4200 rpm, it isn’t, and so you do.

The weak engine lets down a fairly athletic chassis. Like the Impreza, the XV turns in eagerly and is competent when hustled. Raising the body, and thus the center of gravity, does not alter the handling too much. There are a little more body roll and a touch more dive under braking, but these are expected side effects of the loftier ride height. The brakes even took a steep mountain descent without showing signs of fade. Aside from the minimal feedback through the electrically assisted steering, the XV’s chassis is well tuned, and its ride quality falls on the firmer side.

Outside the Subaru showroom, the XV has few natural competitors. The five-door Suzuki SX4 also offers all-wheel drive, but its starting price of $17,764 is a good deal lower than the Crosstrek’s will be. Other all-wheel-drive cars are few, meaning the Crosstrek will primarily battle the equally inexplicable Mitsubishi Outlander Sport and, to a lesser degree, small SUVs such as the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4.

If There’s Nothing Below It, Is It Still Premium?
Cost will be a key component of the XV’s success. For 2012, a base Impreza hatch is 18,745, a base Forester is $21,370. Both are offered in three trim levels, but Subaru tells us it will likely offer the XV in just the two upper trim levels, Premium and Limited. At about $22,500, the XV Premium will be a couple grand more than the equivalent Impreza and a bit less than the Forester 2.5 Premium.

Subaru also let us sample the diesel XV it will offer in Europe. Like the gas engine, the oil burner is a 2.0-liter flat-four, but this one gets a turbocharger. The compression-ignition version only gives up three ponies, but torque soars to 258 lb-ft at 1600 rpm. It’s a sweetheart. Plus, it delivers fuel economy that is roughly 25 percent better than the gas 2.0’s. If that sounds like something you’d be interested in, tell your dealer. Apparently, he has Subaru’s ear.

For the second time in three quarters Toyota Motor Corporation outsold all other carmakers, according to January-September global sales figures, as the Japanese carmaker closes in on a record annual profit.

The company announced today that group sales totaled around 7.412 million vehicles, up 0.1% from the same period a year ago, as strong sales in the United States offset slowdowns in Thailand and China.

Toyota’s groupwide total includes sales at affiliates Daihatsu and Hino Motors. Toyota’s recent success – analysts estimate it will post record profit this fiscal year – illustrates how Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s policies that have weakened the yen are benefiting Japan’s exporters and helping revive an economy that’s been through three recessions in five years. Large manufacturers are more confident than they’ve been since 2007, and share prices are near the highest in half a decade.

General Motors sold 7.25 million vehicles during the same January to September period, up 4.6 % year-on-year, while Volkswagen rose 4.8 % to 7.03 million vehicles, according to figures released earlier this month.

Toyota regained the global sales crown in 2012 after slipping to third place behind GM and Volkswagen in 2011, following natural disasters in Japan and Thailand. Previously, it had been on top from 2008 through 2010.

The Honda Civic sedan, Generation 9.1. Honda’s famous compact car was all-new last year, but we and other critics ripped the car for banal looks and a cheap-feeling interior. Honda’s CEO said the company was racing ahead on a refresh—normally not done until a car is three or four years old—to address these problems. These pictures show a cleaned-up exterior and a grille more like the new Accord’s. Although we can’t see this car’s interior, that’s where we’re expecting the biggest upgrades: better materials and a more appealing design.

That the ninth-gen car was anything less than perfect was a nasty black eye for Honda. It’s had a phenomenal sales year so far, but no company can rely on name inertia and “pretty good” products these days. The Civic is Honda’s second-most-popular product, and, with the Accord, defines the company’s brand here.

Honda is conservative with engines on all-new models. Since this is a refresh, don’t expect anything to change from the current car. The 140-hp inline-four will return as the mainstay engine, and the Si will keep its 201-hp mill.

The 1961 Lincoln Continental was based upon a stretched version of a proposed 1961 Thunderbird two-door hardtop that had been rejected as too classy and not sporty enough for the typical Thunderbird buyer. The 1958 recession and Edsel debacle had severely injured the Ford Motor Company. While the four-seat Thunderbird was a huge success, the Lincoln division was in danger of being culled. Designers and engineers worked hard at making a new, distinctive and profitable Lincoln; they succeeded admirably with these cars. A decision was made to build the cars as four-door vehicles, but a convertible was desired and there was the continuing mandate to share major underbody designs with the Thunderbird. In fact, until 1968, all Lincoln Continentals were four-door vehicles. In an effort to limit the size of the 1961 cars, “suicide” rear-hinged rear doors were selected. The length of the wheelbase was a relatively short 123” until the car was stretched to 126” from 1964 through 1969. These cars may have been physically shorter than the prior-generation cars, but they were almost equally heavy. Convertible versions weighed 300 pounds more than hardtops, due to the need to brace the unit body. Engines are characteristically massive, starting out with 430 cubic inches and 320 hp in 1961, with a bore and stroke increase to 462 cubic inches and a power increase to 340 hp in 1966. The 1969 car is a “hybrid” that utilized the all-new 460 cubic inch, 365 hp Lincoln V-8 in the carry-over unit body. All such cars are considered collectible; earlier four-door hardtops are more affordable than convertibles, given the class and quality of the vehicle. No mention of these cars is complete without the sad remembrance that it was a stretched version of this car that carried President Kennedy on the day of his assassination in 1963. That very car resides at the Henry Ford Museum to this day.

2014 BMW M235i Coupe : Current Models

Evoking a legendary number is a dangerous tactic -- it can lead to big expectations. No NHL player would dream of wearing Wayne Gretzky's number 99, and a rookie NBA player better be able to back-up wearing Michael Jordan's 23. And yet just four pages into the 2014 BMW 2 Series Coupe's 20-page long press release BMW makes its first of several mentions of the legendary 1968 2002. Could the 2014 BMW 2 Series have what it takes to follow in the classic coupe's footsteps?

At the face of it, the new 2014 BMW 2 Series, which will debut at the 2014 Detroit auto show, certainly has the goods to back up the 2002 connection. There are going to be two versions of the rear-drive coupe: the 2014 BMW 228i, and the 2014 BMW M235i – the very first M Performance Bimmer offered in the U.S. The 2014 228i gets the 328i's 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4 under the hood, making 240 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, while the M235i gets BMW's 3.0-liter turbo I-6 pushing out 322 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque. Both cars come standard with an eight-speed automatic, with an available six-speed manual.

Both versions of the 2014 2 Series certainly look to be quite the performers on paper. Equipped with standard-across-the-board launch control, the base 228i can reportedly accelerate from 0-60 mph in just 5.4 seconds when equipped with the automatic. Top speed is limited to 130 mph; though opting for the Sport Line or M Sport packages raises the limiter to 155 mph. The M235i is, not surprisingly, even quicker – 0-60 mph reportedly comes in just 4.8 seconds with the auto, with top speed limited to an autobahn-friendly 155 mph. The manual is expected to take 5.0 seconds for the 0-60 mph run.

Both 2014 2 Series models seem thrifty at the pump, with the 228i predicted to net 22/34/26 mpg city/highway/combined with the manual and 23/35/26 mpg with the automatic. The M235i is expected to get 19/28/22 mpg with the manual and 22/32/25 mpg with the automatic.

But who cares about fuel economy? An Ultimate Driving Machine must perform just as well in the corners as it does in a straight line. To that effect, the 2014 M235i comes impressively equipped for good times on back roads. The M235i gets an M Adaptive Suspension, and M brakes standard, as well as a sport-tuned steering setup. BMW also fits the M235i with standard 18-inch M wheels shod in ultra-sticky Michelin Pilot Super Sports. The M235i's option list includes 19-inch M forged-alloy wheels, and a mechanical limited-slip diff.

Though it doesn't come standard with the performance goodies of the M235i, the 228i can be performance-focused, too. Like the rest of the BMW lineup, the 2014 228i is designed to be individually tailored around the driver with various trim lines. The 228i's Sport Line brings 18-inch alloys and various M235i-inspired interior and exterior trim pieces to the base car. The M Sport package adds an M-tuned suspension to the 228i, as well as M wheels, and much of the M235i's exterior and interior pieces.

Though we can't yet test the 2 Series' 2002 connection, it certainly looks the part. The 2014 BMW 2 Series has the traditional three-box coupe design that BMW made so popular on cars like the 2002 and E30 3 Series. The 2 Series is most certainly an evolution of the 1 Series, with sharper-looking headlights and taillights, crisp body lines, and an overall less-frumpy appearance than the outgoing car. All the traditional BMW touches, from the kidney grille, to the Hofmeister kink are there, as are some of BMW's latter design features, like the "Air Curtains" from the new 4 Series Coupe. Dimensionally, the 2 Series is larger in every dimension than the 1 Series. The 2014 2 Series is as long as an E36 3 Series at 174.5 inches, though wider at 69.8 inches, and with a shorter wheelbase, at 105.9 inches. BMW says both cars have a 50:50 weight distribution, though it doesn't mention the car's estimated curb weight.

Inside, the new 2 Series is typical BMW, with a 2+2 design similar to that of the 4 Series, with a driver-oriented cockpit. A 6.5-inch center-stack mounted screen with iDrive is standard, while those who want navigation get a larger 8.8-inch unit. BMW's Sensatec leatherette is standard, while real leather is optional. Matte silver is the standard interior trim, while brushed aluminum and wood are available. BMW says the 2 Series' cockpit is roomier for passengers in all seats with boosted headroom and legroom.

Though the smallest BMW, the new 2 Series isn't the cheapest -- that honor still goes to the related BMW X1 crossover. The 2014 BMW 228i starts at $33,025, while the 2014 BMW M235i begins at $44,025. Both prices include $925 in destination. We expect the 2 Series Coupe to be complemented by a 2 Series Convertible in the future. On paper, the 2014 BMW 2 Series coupe appears to have what it takes to live up to the expectations set up for it with the 2002 connection, and when the car debuts at the Detroit auto show in January and hits dealers early next year, we'll be sure to test out those claims.

The average price for a gallon of regular gasoline in the United States slipped 2 cents in the past two weeks, though the decline may soon end unless crude oil drops further, according to the Lundberg survey.

The average price of just more than $3.36 per gallon is about 22 cents cheaper than six weeks ago, based on the Oct. 18 survey of some 2,500 retail stations in the lower 48 states, said survey editor Trilby Lundberg. Prices are 39 cents cheaper than a year ago.

"Unless crude prices slip further from here, I think this is probably it for the retail price decline; the pace of decline has already greatly slowed," said Lundberg, who is based in Camarillo, California.

U.S. crude futures fell 2.9 percent over the past two weeks. "If they fall further," Lundberg said, "that could give more breathing room for refiners to cut prices, but right now they have skimpy margins for gasoline."

Albuquerque, New Mexico, had the least expensive gasoline in the country at $3.03 per gallon, according to the survey, while drivers in San Francisco - often the country's priciest gasoline market - paid the most, at $3.81 per gallon.

In California, the lowest average price was $3.64 in Sacramento. The average statewide for a gallon of regular was $3.74, a drop of 9 cents.

Like most sport-utility vehicles, the Pathfinder has been through several personality adjustments over the years, from the original wild child Hardbody truck of 1986 to the mannerly, well-adjusted, seven-passenger family hauler that will roll into Nissan showrooms at the end of October.

Lots of evolution, but the transition from the current third generation Pathfinder to the new 2013 model, is perhaps the most dramatic.

The outgoing Pathfinder is an old school truck-based body-on-frame design, basically rear-wheel drive, with substantial ground clearance, a rugged setup conceived for those who think driving fun begins when the pavement ends.

But the adventurous element has been diminishing in the last few years, replaced by a much different set of priorities: fuel economy, roominess, comfort, and safety. Grown-up stuff. The body-on-frame design gives way to a new architecture, shared with the Infiniti JX—basically front-drive, unibody construction (frame integrated with the body shell), higher chassis rigidity, dramatically lower curb weights, and dramatically higher mpg ratings.

According to Nissan, the new Pathfinders will weigh from 4149 to 4471 pounds, depending on trim level and whether they're equipped with all-wheel drive. That may look like pretty substantial mass, but it's much lighter than the 2012 model, by as much as 500 pounds.

Making the weight reduction even more impressive, the new Pathfinder is bigger than its predecessor in almost every dimension. The wheelbase gains 2.0 inches, to 114.2, overall length goes from 192.3 inches to 197.2, and width increases from 72.8 to a lane-filling 77.2. The only diminished dimension is height, down 3.0 inches to 69.6, in part due to reduced ground clearance, a very modest 6.5 inches, about the same as many sedans, and not at all conducive to rugged off-roading.

Nissan has put the added inches to good use in the roomy interior, whose middle row seats adjust fore and aft by as much as 5.5 inches, with third-row seat access that doesn't require contortions. An interesting touch: the middle row seatback can flip forward for third-row climb-in even when there's a child seat in place. Plenty of cargo space, too.

Overall, the cabin feels more open than some SUVs, thanks to a lower beltline and slim A and D roof pillars. Instrumentation is straightforward and gratifyingly legible, the center stack, which is dominated by an 8-inch display screen, includes a sensible mix of touch-screen controls augmented by ordinary buttons and rotary knobs, as distinct from some competing all digital setups. MPG and MPH
Nissan's ubiquitous 3.5-liter V-6 replaces the previous 4.0-liter. At 260 horsepower and 240 lb.-ft. it sacrifices a bit of thrust, particularly on the torque side of the ledger, but it's hitched to a significantly lighter vehicle, so acceleration doesn't really suffer. Expect 0-to-60 mph to come up in the mid 7-second range.

As with the Infiniti JX, power finds its way to the pavement via a continuously variable transmission (CVT), which is another key component in the Pathfinder's strong fuel economy story. EPA ratings are 20 mpg city, 26 highway for the front-drive model—best highway rating in class, according to Nissan—and 19 mpg city/25 mpg highway with all-wheel drive. That is a big gain from the 14 mpg city /20 mpg highway rating of the current vehicle.

On Road and Off
The driving experience can be summed up as mature. Suspension tuning is firm enough to keep cornering attitudes level, without compromising the comfort quotient, and there's enough power to minimize drama in passing on two-lane highways.

But there's little in the new Pathfinder's dynamic persona to encourage friskiness. Relatively slow at 3.3 turns lock to lock, the new electric power steering system delivers little tactile information to the driver, and the transmission exhibits the up and down hunting that's typical of CVTs, though Nissan is making steady progress with this transmission type.

As an aside, it's worth noting that the new Pathfinder's towing capacity—5000 pounds—is exceptionally high for a CVT. On the other hand, the third generation Pathfinder could tow up to 7000 pounds.

Still, if fun-to-drive is essentially absent, there are other virtues of a grown-up nature. Ride quality, for example, is firm but compliant enough to iron out most pavement nastiness, brake pedal feel is just right and nicely responsive to driver modulation, interior noise levels are commendably low at all speeds, and if the Pathfinder isn't designed for off-road adventures it figures to do well in rain and snow, even in basic front-drive mode.

The Bottom Line
Designed to compete in the premium large SUV segment with the likes of the Ford Explorer, Honda Pilot, Chevy Traverse and Toyota Highlander, the Pathfinder's pricing ranges from just over $28,000 to well over $40,000 for a loaded top-of-the-line version with all-wheel drive.

2002 Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR Roadster : Classic Cars

After producing only 20 of the 25 CLK GTR Coupes, HWA decided to build the remaining five as roadsters. Unlike the Coupe, they have a rear wing supported by normal stanchions and built up headrests with intake scoops. Each was specially built for an individual customer and had a huge list of standard options including air conditioning and a luggage set.

The company behind the GTR Roadster is HWA GmbH and they have a long history developing Mercedes-Benz race cars. Since 1967, HWA have been producing cars such as the CLK DTM touring cars and other one-of creations. Naturally, HWA also worked with AMG on many of these projects.

Back in 1999, DaimlerChrysler acquired AMG, renaming it to Mercedes AMG GmbH. In doing so they effectively separated HWA from AMG developments. This left the 170-employee firm with independence over its products and let the company produce the stunning CLK GTR Roadster.

In November of 1998 the very first road-going CLK GTR was completed to homologate the GT1 racecar. GTRs competed in every round of the 1997 FIA GT Championship against the Porsche GT1 and McLaren F1. Drivers Bernd Schneider and Klaus Ludwig took many victories and helped the factory team win the FIA's championship in 1997 and 1998. Riding on this success, HWA decided to sell a road-going variant and limited production to 25 examples.

While the front end of the GTR had a resemblance to the front-engined CLK saloon it was named after, the GTR was entirely new. The road cars (Straßenversion) mimicked the racecars almost entirely from the outside, but featured more forgiving suspension, a lush interior and an integrated wing.

The technology used to beat the competition on the track is bred into the CLK GTR. The basis of the car is a race-proven, carbon fiber and aluminum honeycomb monocoque. Protection for the occupants is provided by an integrated steel roll cage with rigid crash-impact boxes. The suspension is all inboard, like the race car and the ride-height is adjustable. The entire body is made from carbon fiber.

Powering the GTR was the M120 V12 based off the SL600. It displaced 6.9 liters and produced around 600bhp. Mated to the monocoque tub and sequential gearbox, the engine was a stressed member of the chassis. A six-speed sequential-manual transmission is fitted to the power plant with gear change by buttons on the steering wheel. Some customers had their car ordered or upgraded with the 7.3 liter engine.

Inside the car was very well appointed with a bespoke instrument cluster, a leather clad steering wheel with integrated airbag, air conditioning, an audio system, adjustable pedals, four point seat belts and luggage pods with set of seven suitcases.
