2012 Nissan Versa Probed For Front Air Bag Safety Concerns : News

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has opened an investigation into 2012 Nissan Versa sedans over concerns with the small car's front air bags.

The safety agency says Nissan discovered pinched wiring in the steering wheel, which could possibly short-circuit and prevent the air bag from deploying during a collision in the Versa.

NHTSA's Office of Defect Investigation has opened a preliminary evaluation into the issue to determine if a recall of the estimated 100,000 Nissan cars is needed. (Read More)

2013 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT Coupe : Current Models
2013 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT Coupe : Current Models

The SLS AMG’s short run has run its course; and with an emphasis on fuel efficiency resulting in engine downsizing, you could be forgiven for thinking that surely this is the end for AMG’s fire-breathing 6.2-liter V-8 as we know it, too. After all, AMG’s twin-turbo 5.5-liter V-8 lies in wait, making monster power from relative sips of fuel. The Times, They Are A Changin’, you could say. Like Ron Burgundy, the skunkworks crew in charge of the SLS AMG GT has never heard that song. So as we say goodbye to the 563-hp SLS AMG, we welcome the 583-hp SLS AMG GT.

More Power, More Noise

The newly powerful engine makes maximum horsepower at the same 6800 rpm as the outgoing version. That increase comes via the manipulation of timing, fuel injection, and spark to improve combustion. Despite the power gain, the improved 6.2-liter’s torque production remains at 479 lb-ft. All that backside-compressing power is fed through the same seven-speed, dual-clutch automatic as the previous model. However, the transmission receives new gearchange logic paired with updated engine mapping, which Mercedes promises results in quicker shift times. (Although our complaints regarding AMG’s DCT unit have been few and far between, its only-slightly-sluggish response time is the most frequently heard.)

The result of those 20 extra miniature horses crammed underneath the GT’s long hood is, Mercedes estimates, a 0-to-60-mph time reduced by 0.1 second, to 3.6 seconds—we’ve hit 60 in 3.5 seconds with an SLS coupe—and an electronically limited top speed of 197 mph, which is the same as your grandfather’s old SLS AMG. If shaving a tenth from the 0-to-60 sprint doesn’t do it for you, take comfort in knowing that the GT comes with “passionate acoustic feedback for the driver.” That’s more of the snap, crackle, and pop off-throttle we’ve grown to love. Audio enhancement is done naturally, Mercedes tells us; that means no synthetic exhaust notes piped through the stereo system like some other German brands that shall remain nameless.

The previous-gen Adaptive Suspension is swapped out in favor of AMG’s new Adaptive Performance Suspension, featuring stiffer and more aggressive spring and damper tuning for both of its two modes. The stiffness being conveyed through the even-stiffer-than-before suspension is met at the other end of the equation by standard matte black/polished face (three other colors will be made available), 19-inch, 10-spoke aluminum wheels at the front and 20-inchers in the rear. Housed in those spoke-tacular rollers are the same 15.4-inch vented discs in the front and 14.2-inchers at the rear as were in the pre-GT SLS; carbon-ceramic discs again will be an option.

Same Gooey Inside

Much of the interior is covered in Mercedes’ Designo leather, with faux-suede accents present on the seating surfaces, the grips of the recontoured steering wheel, and elsewhere throughout the cabin. The GT’s center console, door panels, and air vents are trimmed in a high-gloss black finish (carbon fiber again is available as an option); even more black can be found in the gauge cluster, which features new black dials and black accents surrounding the LED shift lights. In contrast to all that darkness—and to make sure your passengers are aware they’re in a sporty vehicle—the GT gets red seatbelts, red-trimmed floor mats, and red contrast stitching on the seats, center console, dashboard, and door panels. To go with all that black, you can option your SLS AMG GT in color combinations of mocha brown/porcelain, titanium gray/porcelain, and mystic red/porcelain. We wonder how red seatbelts will look in a mocha brown interior.

About the only part of the SLS AMG GT that isn’t soft—well, not counting the suspension in Sport and Sport Plus modes—is the exterior. The hard candy outside is subtly updated with head- and taillamps that have been given a darker look, as well as gloss-black finishes to the grille fins and three-pointed star. There’s also a GT badge next to the AMG emblem on the rear.

The SLS AMG GT will go on sale this November in both coupe and roadster form. Pricing information is not yet available; expect details to emerge closer to the reinvigorated supercar’s on-sale date.

1968 Chevrolet Corvette L-88 Owens/corning Race Car : Classic Cars

In the late-1960s, the Corvette was one of the “cars to beat” in varying racing series. It was also one of the few American cars that stood a chance against the likes of Ferrari, Aston Martin, and Porsche. One car, however, has topped every other Corvette throughout its lifespan: this is the 1968 Chevrolet L-88 Corvette Owens/Corning FIA/SCCA Racing Car with the chassis No. OCF/T.P.I. 002-68.

With its numerous victories in SCCA and FIA races throughout its life, particularly in the ’60s and `70s, this L-88 Corvette is often referred to as the most victorious racing Corvette ever. Now, documentation is scarce on some other Corvettes, so that is technically an unofficial title, but regardless, it is one accomplished piece of machinery.

After its retirement, this particular model was lost in the shuffle and wasn’t found again until its previous owner decided he had to have it. After hiring Corvette specialist, David Reisner, to find this classic `Vette, he finally met the Corvette he had been searching for. It was found at Road Atlanta when a colleague of Reisner overheard a racer claiming his `Vette as being an ex-Jerry Hansen and Owens/Corning car.

After all of this time and money spent searching for this car, it is now being presented at auction by RM Auctions in August 2012.

2015 Bentley Continental Supersports : Current...
2015 Bentley Continental Supersports : Current Models

Bentley is planning a 650bhp-plus Continental Supersports model for launch around 2014 as a new high-performance flagship coupé.

The lightweight model is expected to feature carbonfibre panels, stiffer suspension and possibly a stripped-out cabin, plus more power from its twin-turbo W12.

A Supersports was launched in autumn 2009 ahead of the run-out of the previous-gen Continental GT, but the new car will become a long-term feature of the line-up.

The Supersports will bridge the gap from today’s 616bhp Speed model to the eagerly anticipated, 675bhp-plus, road-going Continental GT3 that Bentley plans to launch in 2015 alongside a race-ready Continental GT3 customer car.

Like Porsche, which often differentiates models with quite small power hikes, the Supersports is likely to feature a relatively modest 30bhp or so increase over the Speed.

“There is a limit to how much power can sensibly be extracted, so the Supersports wouldn’t be all about pure power,” said a Bentley source.

In turn, the rest of its improvements would focus on cutting the kerb weight, sharpening gearchange speeds, revising the chassis settings and improving braking power.

All the changes would be focused on a keener driving experience with sharper steering and handling, firmer body control and a sportier exhaust note to mark the Supersports as a more focused driver’s machine.

To get the weight down, Bentley is understood to be planning carbonfibre body panels, lightweight composite seats and possibly stripping out the rear seats to make a two-seat cabin.

GM Targets Higher Resale Values To Boost...
GM Targets Higher Resale Values To Boost Profits, Margins : News

General Motors, seeking to boost its profit margins, says it can save as much as $200 million annually by improving resale values of its vehicles and further narrowing the gap with competitors who don't have to spend as much to offer lease deals.

The automaker's so-called residual values rose to 44 percent last year from 36.5 percent in 2009 when the company went through bankruptcy reorganization, according ALG Inc., the Santa Barbara, Calif.-based company that sets resale values.

Higher residuals help automakers offer lower monthly lease payments because the cost is based upon the projected resale value when the contract ends.

GM's lower resale values relative to rivals mean the automaker spends an additional $150 million to $200 million annually to make its lease payments competitive, Chuck Stevens, chief financial officer for GM North America, told analysts March 27 at a Bank of America Corp. forum in New York.

"The key will be great products and pricing and incentive discipline," Stevens said. "It's that simple."

GM Chief Executive Officer Dan Akerson is pushing the company to boost operating margins to be more competitive with Ford Motor Co. and Volkswagen AG.

GM is introducing about 20 new vehicles to the United States this year after its model lineup had grown stale following bankruptcy. The company's U.S. market share fell to an 88-year-low last year

GM's increase in residual values compares with a rise in the industry average to 46.5 percent last year from 42.7 percent in 2009.

Ford rose to 45 percent from 39.6 percent and Chrysler Group LLC increased to 44 percent from 36.4 percent while Honda Motor Co.'s Honda, the major auto brand with the best resale value, declined to 51.5 percent from 52.3 percent, ALG said.

Closing the resale value gap is part of GM's efforts to boost its adjusted earnings before interest and taxes margin in North America to 10 percent from 7.4 percent during the past three years, Stevens said.

"Residual values, at the end of the day, are the ultimate acid test of whether the vehicle has been successful," said Alan Batey, GM's top U.S. sales executive and interim chief marketing officer. "Was it well received, did it have good quality and is it desirable, did people really want to buy it?"

New vehicles, such as the Chevrolet Cruze, and a strategy to avoid hurting those models with too many discounts and capping sales to rental car companies have helped, Batey said.

"I like leasing," he said. "You build retention with the customer. If you've got really strong residual values and you're not having to discount heavily to hit certain lease rates, it's great business."

GM's Cadillac luxury brand saw the largest improvement among the company's four U.S. brands, rising to 45.6 percent from 34.7 percent, according to ALG.

The automaker began selling two new sedans last year and this week revealed a redesigned CTS sedan in New York.

The automaker continues the effort with the redesigned Chevrolet Impala, arriving in U.S. showrooms next month.

GM sold few Impalas through lease last year, about 1 percent, Russ Clark, a Chevy marketing director, said.

With the new Impala, the company is aiming for as much as 20 percent as the company seeks to increase the rate of sales to retail customers from 30 percent of deliveries to 70 percent, Clark said.

GM also wants to boost sales in Californa and the East Coast, which do more leasing than other parts of the U.S.

2013 Acura NSX Concept : Concept Cars
2013 Acura NSX Concept : Concept Cars

A year after impressing auto enthusiasts with the original NSX Concept, Honda's Acura division unveiled the next evolution of its hybrid sports car at NAIAS 2013. While the exterior is largely the same with the exception of some tweaks here and there, Acura opens the doors and provides a look at one possible direction for the coupe's interior.

The all-new interior is defined by Acura as a "Human Support Cockpit" based around the concept of "synergy between man and machine," which is a gimmicky way of describing a driver-centric interior design. Key to the driver-focused nature of the cabin is the "simple sports interface," which aims to give the driver quick, sure control of the car without overwhelming them with buttons, dials and gizmos.

Acura furthers the NSX Concept's sporty intent with its choice of interior materials – red leather, carbon fiber and red-stitched Alcantara help create a space that exudes power, speed and confidence. The carbon fiber trim provides a clear barrier between passenger and driver areas, adding to the driver focus.

Outside, the latest concept is largely the same as the original, with the low, wide proportions carrying over. Look a little closer, though, and you'll see why the NSX Concept designers have been getting paid for the past year – tweaks around the front and rear fascias, new wheels and a couple of other minor body changes distinguish the 2013 NSX Concept from its 2012 counterpart.

"This further evolution of the Acura NSX Concept design is remarkably true to the original concept styling," said Mike Accavitti, Acura's vice president of national marketing operations. "We're making great progress in delivering on the expectations we created a year ago, with advanced technology that will bring new levels of performance and a unique, dynamic experience to the exotic sports car market."

As was announced last year, the car will use a sport hybrid Super Handling AWD (SH-AWD) powertrain with a mid-mounted V-6 engine with integrated motor and two front-mounted electric motors. With the help of an engine-integrated motor and dual-clutch transmission, this layout delivers instant positive or negative torque to the front wheels to boost handling capabilities.

Acura has not yet provided specs like power and acceleration, but with a couple of years left before production, the company will keep us guessing for a little while longer.

2013 "World Performance Car" : Award Winners
2013 "World Performance Car" : Award Winners

At a press conference hosted by the New York International Auto Show and Bridgestone Corporation, the Porsche Boxster / Cayman was declared the 2013 World Performance Car.

This is the second consecutive year that Porsche has won the prestigious World Performance Car title and the third overall. The Porsche 911 won last year’s award and the Porsche Cayman won the inaugural World Performance Car award in 2006.

The Porsche Boxster / Cayman was chosen from an initial entry list of twenty new cars from all over the world, then a short list of ten, then three finalists: the Ferrari F12 Berlinetta, the Porsche Boxster / Cayman and the combined entry Scion FR-S / Subaru BRZ / Toyota 86 / GT 86.

“To be chosen as the winner of the World Performance Car by this global jury is extremely rewarding,” said Detlev von Platen, president and CEO of Porsche Cars North America. “The new Boxster is a serious sports car and has become a worldwide success. Its brother, the new Cayman, is launching this month and has already captivated sports car enthusiasts around the world."

The World Car jurors observed that, “The Job One for this new generation of Porsche's littler two-doors was actually two-fold. The Boxster needed to be seen as less of a fancy secretary's car and the Cayman needed to be set loose to be an even better Porsche sports car than the iconic 911. In both instances, mission over-accomplished. Both cars are now allowed out of their company cages and they drive as if they're celebrating."

Candidates for the World Performance Car award must demonstrate a specific and overt sports/performance orientation while satisfying the same availability criteria as for the overall World Car of the Year award. Candidates may be chosen from the World Car of the Year list of eligible vehicles, or they may be newly introduced variants that satisfy the same criteria, but are derived from existing rather than brand-new models. In all cases, they must have a minimum annual production rate of five-hundred (500) vehicles.

Previous World Performance Car winners were the Porsche 911 in 2012, the Ferrari 458 Italia in 2011, the Audi R8 V10 in 2010, the Nissan GT-R in 2009, the Audi R8 in 2008, the Audi RS4 in 2007 and the Porsche Cayman S in 2006.

Vehicles are selected and voted on by an international jury panel comprised of sixty-six (66) top-level automotive journalists from twenty-three (23) countries around the world. Each juror was appointed by the World Car Steering Committee on the basis of his or her expertise, experience, credibility, and influence. Each juror typically drives and evaluates new vehicles on a regular basis as part of their professional work. Through their respective outlets they collectively reach an audience of many millions world-wide.

About the World Car Awards
Now in their ninth year, the annual World Car awards have become one of the world’s most prestigious, credible and significant programs of its kind.

The awards were inaugurated in 2003, and officially launched in January 2004, to reflect the reality of the global marketplace, as well as to recognize and reward automotive excellence on an international scale. The awards are intended to complement, not compete, with existing national and regional Car of the Year programs.

The awards are administered by a non-profit association, under the guidance of a Steering Committee of pre-eminent automotive journalists from Asia, Europe, and North America. Peter Lyon (Japan) and Matt Davis (Italy) are the co-chairs; John McCormick (USA), Jens Meiners (Germany), Mike Rutherford (U.K.), Eddie Alterman (USA), and Gerry Malloy (Canada) are the directors. There is no affiliation with, nor are the awards in any way influenced by any publication, auto show, automaker, or other commercial enterprise.

Prime Research International, a global leader in strategic communication research and consultancy is the World Car Awards’ research partner. The company will provide strategic reports in 2013 that analyze our awards global automotive media coverage.

U.S. Auto Sales Wrapping Up A Strong March...
U.S. Auto Sales Wrapping Up A Strong March : News

U.S. auto sales are finishing March on an upbeat note, with analysts expecting the industry to extend its strongest streak in five years.

Three independent forecasters predict a seasonally adjusted annual sales rate of 15.3 million, nearly matching February’s 15.36 million SAAR and up 8 percent from a year earlier on a unit basis. Kelley Blue Book is at the low end of forecasts, at 15.2 million. More positive are Barclays at 15.5 million and Edmunds.com at 15.6 million.

A performance at those levels would mark the fifth straight month above the 15 million rate. The last streak of that length ended in early 2008, as the economy veered into recession.

Automakers release March results on Tuesday, April 2.

“We will have a strong March” Ludwig Willisch, CEO of BMW of North America, said at the New York auto show this week. “For the rest of the year, we are looking at constant growth.”

BMW sales cooled in the first two months of the year, rising 1 percent after a December surge. The German automaker’s results trailed the industry’s 8 percent gain.

Mercedes-Benz USA CEO Steve Cannon isn’t sure if ending the month with an earlier-than-usual Easter will affect retail sales, but said “it will be a record March” anyhow.

But Mike Hoornaert, general manager at Fox Automotive in Rochester Hills, Mich., said “it looks like it is going to be a strong close.”

Hoornaert said customers at his Chevrolet, Toyota and Volkswagen stores are no longer reacting much to politics. But they do respond to incentives. “It all depends on the incentives,” he said.

Robert Davis, senior vice president of Mazda’s U.S. operations group, said incentives remain at reasonable levels, but big players in highly competitive segments can raise the ante for everybody. He said American Honda spent big on outgoing Civic models in the fourth quarter and now has a smaller incentive on the new-generation Civic.

“Everybody had to react to that,” Davis said in New York. “They’re so dominant in that segment that when they make a move everybody else makes a move with it.”

General Motors expects to finish the first quarter with an increase in market share for retail and fleet, Alan Batey, interim marketing chief and head of U.S. sales, said at the New York show.

“The first quarter has been on the high end of our expectations,” he said. “We’re a little bit above where we thought we’d be.”

He added: “March looks really strong.”

Expectations also are rising for the full year on improving U.S. economic indicators.

The Dow Jones 30 Industrials and Standard & Poor’s 500 indexes set record highs this month. IHS Global Insight economist Nigel Gault expects gains next week in monthly reports on manufacturing, jobs and payroll wages.

This week, Barclays analyst Brian Johnson raised his total 2013 U.S. sales forecast a notch to 15.5 million – 1 million more than last year’s total and 5 million more than the 10.4 million sold during the industry collapse of 2009.

Jeff Schuster, the top forecaster for LMC Automotive, said car buyers are ignoring political deadlock.

“Consumers do not appear fazed by headwinds from Washington,” Schuster said. referring to the battles in Washington over the fiscal cliff and the sequester spending cuts. “Auto sales are outperforming earlier expectations.”

Mercedes’ Cannon said: “We are thrilled about the start of the year and confident with the economy, feeling like it is gaining traction.”

General Manager Rick Jones of Mike Shaw Toyota in Corpus Christi, Texas, said he’s “bullish” on April.

“With increased credit availability, Toyota incentives being strong and the redesigned RAV4, I think April will be like March,” he said. “It’s going to be a barn burner.”

2013 Toyota i-Road Concept : Concept Cars
2013 Toyota i-Road Concept : Concept Cars

Automakers increasingly are turning to electric vehicles to offer buyers zero-emissions mobility, but four-wheeled EVs can be heavy and expensive, and they can’t slice through urban centers any better than regular cars. Toyota thinks it has a solution, and it’s called the i-ROAD. The small, three-wheeled electric-powered concept is something of a cross between a car, a motorcycle, and a fancy golf cart, and Toyota refers to it as a personal mobility vehicle.

On paper, the i-ROAD might not seem as cool as conventionally powered three-wheelers such as Morgan’s 3-Wheeler, but it’s actually quite innovative. The i-ROAD seats two passengers in tandem to keep the body as narrow as possible; it measures just 33.5 inches wide, 56.9 inches high, and 92.5 inches long. That’s just a bit more than half the width of a Smart Fortwo Electric Drive, and Toyota claims that the i-ROAD is no wider than a two-wheeler. Toyota must be referring to some of the beefier bikes, but either way, the concept is skinny.

Besides offering hypothetical urban customers a tight, motorcycle-like footprint, the i-ROAD also gives them protection from the elements. Featuring a fully enclosed body—bettering BMW’s odd C1 scooter, which had only a roof panel—the i-ROAD makes a far better foul-weather proposition than a regular motorcycle or even the Morgan or Can-Am Spyder. Toyota says that because the i-ROAD’s passenger cell is fully enclosed, no helmet is necessary—a critical point for the hair-style sensitive. The closed body also means the driver cannot stick his or her foot out to steady the i-ROAD when at rest, so Toyota gave the concept a trick front-wheel setup that keeps it upright without human help.

Toyota calls the i-ROAD’s self-righting front-wheel gadgetry Active Lean technology, and it consists of a geared actuator affixed to each front wheel’s suspension arm. A computer manages the degree of lean of each front wheel—as the angle of lean of one wheel increases, the other lowers by the same amount—using steering angle, a gyroscope, and vehicle speed to induce lean in corners or keep the i-ROAD steady at low speeds. The system also can filter out potentially balance-upsetting road imperfections when traveling in a straight line. The i-ROAD is steered using a squircle-shaped steering wheel rather than a set of handlebars.

If you thought the i-ROAD’s front-wheel setup couldn’t get any more involving or interesting—from a technical standpoint, at least—prepare to be further wowed. The i-ROAD is actually front-wheel drive, and no power goes to the rear wheel. Each front wheel features a 2.7-hp in- hub electric motor powered by a shared lithium-ion battery that offers a claimed driving range of 30 miles. Toyota says battery top-offs take just three hours when fed by a “conventional domestic power supply,” but doesn’t indicate which domestic power standard—Japanese, European, or U.S.—is being cited.

There aren’t many exciting electric cars out there right now—excepting Tesla’s quick and attractive Model S—but we’re genuinely tickled by this Toyota concept. It looks cool, and we’re inclined to believe Toyota’s press-release hyperbole regarding the i-ROAD’s “unique driving experience.” We foresee the i-ROAD having far more success in Europe and Japan than here, though, if it ever were to go into production, thanks to the variously tight parking conditions, congested urban centers, and strict emissions regulations. Too bad. Because while the i-ROAD has one less wheel than a Prius, it’s at least three times more interesting.

1934 Duesenberg Model J Murphy Beverly...
1934 Duesenberg Model J Murphy Beverly Sedan : Classic Cars

The 1934 Duesenberg J Murphy LWB Custom Beverly Sedan (Lot #5004) offered at Barrett-Jackson’s Scottsdale auction ranks among the world’s most-desirable and valuable pre-war classic cars.

With a striking and impressive body created by the Walter M. Murphy Company of Pasadena, Calif., which was a major coachbuilder for Duesenberg, this extravagant craft from the Golden Age of motoring will cross the block on Saturday, Jan. 19, as part of Barrett-Jackson’s Salon Collection of top-drawer collector cars.

The legendary Duesenberg Model J was conceived in the late 1920s as a grand touring car that would be America’s answer to the great luxury marques of Europe, such as Rolls-Royce, Mercedes-Benz and Isotta Fraschini. The huge chassis for such a craft was designed by Frederick Duesenberg, who with his brother, August, had engineered their company’s highly successful racing efforts, as well as their less profitable venture into automobile production.

Like many luxury automobiles of its day, the Duesenberg Model J was purchased as an unbodied chassis and running gear – including its magnificent straight-eight engine – that would be assigned by the buyer to one of America’s greatest coachbuilders, such as LeBaron, Rollston or LaGrande. This was an expensive proposition, as the chassis cost nearly $10,000, equivalent to well over 10 times that amount today. The custom coachwork could easily double that.

This Duesenberg Model J is one of 12 bodied by Murphy, and it is considered the finest one now in existence, with documented ownership history from 1934 to the present. A complete nut-and-bolt restoration to the highest possible quality was performed by Stone Barn Restorations of New Jersey.

A National First Prize winner from the Antique Automobile Club of America and the Classic Car Club of America, the Duesenberg sedan competed in more than 10 Concours d’Elegance events and reportedly never failed to win.

Duesenberg Inc. was purchased by the famed E.L. Cord in a bankruptcy sale, and it was Cord’s desire to market the mighty Model J to wealthy patrons who would appreciate, and could afford, the finest quality in motoring.

Duesenberg advertised the Model J as “The World’s Finest Motor Car,” and it became a favorite among the world’s rich and famous, including members of European nobility and top Hollywood celebrities. Duesenberg became synonymous with high style and elegance, and the well-known expression for greatness, “It’s a Duesy,” came directly from those who were awestruck by one.

The car’s stunning performance and unparalleled luxury details – the Model J was known for being as beautifully finished under the hood as it was in its passenger compartment – brought it to the highest level of the automotive world, where it remains today among the world’s most astute car collectors.

Subaru Sees Big Fuel Economy Gains From...
Subaru Sees Big Fuel Economy Gains From 1st Hybrid : News

Subaru says the hybrid version of its XV Crosstrek crossover, its first gasoline-electric production vehicle, will deliver an 11 percent jump in fuel economy over the nonhybrid variant.

The hybrid will arrive in U.S. showrooms in the fall, the carmaker said at a briefing in Tokyo before the vehicle's unveiling today at the New York auto show.

Also making a global premiere in New York was a concept WRX performance model that foreshadows the look of the next generation of the turbocharged Impreza performance spinoff.

The XV Crosstrek Hybrid's drivetrain, developed in-house, combines a nickel-metal hydride battery and electric motor with Subaru's all-wheel-drive system.

Combined 31 mpg?
The hybrid hasn't received an EPA fuel economy rating. But Subaru expects it to get 28 mpg city/34 mpg highway/31 mpg combined, a spokesman said.

That's an 11 percent increase over the 28 mpg combined rating for the gasoline XV Crosstrek with an automatic transmission.

Subaru parent Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. is rolling out hybrid technology to lift fuel economy in a fleet traditionally heavy on crossovers and awd vehicles.

Akihide Takeuchi, XV Crosstrek product planning chief, said it was too soon to tell what portion of XV Crosstrek sales would come from the hybrid variant.

The XV Crosstrek Hybrid gets a 2.0-liter horizontally opposed four-cylinder engine that was partially modified to reduce friction. It is combined with a continuously variable transmission.

The hybrid's battery is under the rear storage space to deliver the same front-rear weight distribution as the gasoline XV Crosstrek. Extra weight in the front comes from the hybrid's 13.4-hp, 10-kilowatt electric motor.

The hybrid can run in electric-only mode at low speeds and uses the electric motor to assist the engine at medium speeds.

Design touches
The hybrid also gets design flourishes:

• Clear lens covers on the rear combination lamps.

• Light emitting diodes in the taillights.

• Aerodynamic wheel covers to reduce drag.

• A blue color scheme for the interior instrument cluster.

• A new "plasma green pearl" exterior color option.

Subaru global design chief Osamu Namba said the idea was to give the hybrid an advanced, high-tech clean look. "We supported through styling things that highlighted design and function," he said.

2014 Dodge Durango : Current Models
2014 Dodge Durango : Current Models

The 2014 Dodge Durango debuts at the 2013 New York Auto Show on Thursday with a new eight-speed automatic transmission that may be a game-changer in its segment.

In comparison, the 2013 Honda Pilot (a Durango rival) is equipped with a five-speed automatic transmission. The 2013 Chevrolet Traverse and 2013 Ford Explorer, also Durango competitors, get six-speed automatic transmissions.

The 2014 Durango will go on sale in the third quarter. Pricing was not announced.

Chrysler apparently had two goals with the Durango: to make it less thirsty and to give it "an even more sinister look than the previous model," according to a company statement.

The Durango gets a new front fascia and new projector headlights with optional LED running lights. Chrysler said the Durango will be offered in five trim levels: SXT, Rallye, R/T, Citadel and a new Limited model. There is no 2014 Durango SRT8 in the lineup.

The standard eight-speed transmission in the Durango boosts fuel efficiency up to 9 percent, according to Chrysler. The new transmission features a rotary shifter.

The EPA has not released official fuel economy numbers on the 2014 Durango.

The 2013 Dodge Durango 2WD with a 3.6-liter V6 engine and five-speed automatic transmission returns 16 mpg in city driving and 23 mpg on the highway, according to the EPA. The 2013 Durango 2WD with a 5.7-liter V8 engine and six-speed automatic transmission returns 14 mpg in city driving and 20 mpg on the highway, according to the EPA.

The 2014 Durango gets carryover engines. They are a standard 290-horsepower 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 and a 360-hp 5.7-liter Hemi V8.

Options on the 2014 Durango include second-row captain's chairs, a heated steering wheel, heated and ventilated seats, and accent stitching.

1971 Plymouth Hemi ‘Cuda Convertible : Class...
1971 Plymouth Hemi ‘Cuda Convertible : Classic Cars

Only 11 Plymouth Hemi ‘Cuda convertibles were ever built, making them among the rarest and most desirable of Mopar muscle cars. Among Hemi ‘Cuda convertibles, it doesn’t get any more exclusive than one of one built, like the 1971 Hemi ‘Cuda convertible seen here.

The only 1971 Hemi ‘Cuda convertible sprayed in “Plum Crazy” (and one of two originally built for export to Canada) will cross the block at Barrett-Jackson’s upcoming Scottsdale auction, as part of its exclusive “Salon Collection” of premium automobiles.

The car in question comes with the 426-cubic-inch Hemi V-8 engine, dual four-barrel carburetors, the 727 automatic transmission, the Super Track Pak option and a power convertible top.

While the car is pristine today, it was just five days away from being sold for scrap when it was discovered by Hemi ‘Cuda specialist Harold Sullivan on New Year’s Eve 2001. Reported stolen some 30 years earlier, the car was found tangled in underbrush and nearly beyond saving.

A two year restoration project, undertaken by Cummins Restoration and Ted Mazurek, followed. Once completed, the car was appraised and authenticated by Mopar expert Galen Govier, and it later went on to win top honors at the 2005 Meadowbrook Concours d’Elegance.

It’s not clear if the car is a numbers-matching example, but given its sad history our guess is that it’s not. Still, the car in any form is highly desirable, and likely to command top dollar when it crosses the block on January 19, 2013.

2014 Subaru WRX Concept : Concept Cars

2014 Subaru WRX Concept : Concept Cars

Drivetrain details are disappointingly absent, but the Japanese brand did unveil a few key hints about the new car. Compared to the current car, it’s 2.3 inches shorter in overall length, 3.7 inches wider and 3.7 inches lower. That lower roof will help improve the car’s center of gravity, as will the carbon fiber it’s made of. The concept also gets a carbon fiber rear diffuser.

But the biggest story is how it looks – a lot like a Jaguar. Any semblance of the car’s boy racer roots will be thoroughly erased if the production car turns out looking anything like this.

Instead, a gaping grille, wide vents around the fog lights and swept back headlights give the car a more mature look.

It’s wide stance and strong character lines continue around the sides and over to the deck lid which is designed to act as a spoiler. While Subaru might be trying to take a more grown-up approach to the next generation WRX, it still couldn’t resist playing with a few neon accents.

The WRX badge built into the grille, the brake calipers and even the tips of the exhaust pipes all get fluorescent yellow finish.

Best Selling Cars Around The Globe

This is planned as the focal point for Great Wall’s expansion throughout Europe. For the moment, three Great Wall models are produced in Bulgaria: the Voleex C10 hatchback, Hover H5 SUV and Steed Pick-up. It looks like the Voleex C30 sedan could also be added to Great Wall’s Bulgarian factory lines soon. Sales by segment enable to guess the sales per model for Great Wall and so far the Voleex C10 has been the most successful with 182 units sold over the period, followed by the Steed pick-up with 178 and the Hover H5 SUV at 156. Based on segment sales I estimate the Voleex C10 to rank within the Top 20 best-selling models in Bulgaria in 2012 so far at #19. (Read More)

Car : 2009 Ford Mustang Roush P-51b
Author : Muscle Vehicles

Like most gearheads, Jack Roush enjoys engines of any kind and speed at any level. Nobody knows more about getting a Ford around a racetrack quickly than this guy. And for years, some of the nastiest, most powerful, and most spectacular blue oval hardware ever built has come out of Roush Performance in Livonia Michigan. However, as an owner of two P-51 Mustangs, Jack also has a healthy love for the vintage warbirds which inspired America’s first pony car. And in 2009, he decided to create an aeronautical themed performance car that would be a literal interpretation of Triple Ace Bud Anderson’s “Old Crow” P-51B fighter plane. One of only 51 produced, this showroom fresh Roush P-51B is the ultimate embodiment of classic American aviation and decades of racing knowledge. If you’re looking for a unique show car that’s virtually guaranteed to grow into an elite, investment grade muscle car, here’s your chance to strap in early and watch this Mustang climb!

Number 7 of only 51 Roush P-51B Mustangs ever built, this pristine Ford pony car has been in the care of one meticulous owner since new and presents excellent in every way. The car’s body is 100% straight with no history of accidents or damage of any kind, and a close look down its fuselage reveals not so much as a dent or ding anywhere. Roush’s high quality paint and bodywork blend invisibly with the car’s tight and glossy factory panels. And overall, this Ford pony conveys a premium sense of collectability that, when combined with its spectacular performance, creates a timeless modern classic.

Following the successful launch of their 2008 P-51A, which is one of the most sought-after and collectible Mustangs of the company’s 17 year history, Roush Performance decided ‘refinement’ would be the key term when it came time for a 2009 follow up. And nowhere is that theme more apparent than on the exterior of this P-51B. At the front of the car, a high flow Roush grille hangs a familiar P-51 emblem between factory black-bucket head lights, a custom Roush front valence and a P-51B-exclusive silver chin spoiler. Above that grille, a factory Mustang GT hood props a prominent “ROUSHCHARGED” branded scoop above a P-51B-exclusive painted green stripe and P-51B-exclusive painted “510 HP” call-outs. Behind that hood, original glass displays a silver “Roush” windshield banner between flat black factory rear view mirrors and body-matched Roush quarter window covers. Below that glass, bright P-51B emblems and traditional Roush Performance emblems are perfectly aligned with Vapor painted rocker panels and Vapor painted door handles. And at the back of the car, a P-51B-exclusive black valence centers pristine factory tail lights and a “P-51" branded faux fuel filler emblem between a silver, fiberglass racing spoiler, a stylized rear bumper and Roush branded exhaust tips. Car : 1969 Chevrolet Camaro SS – Pro Touring Convertible 502
Author : Motor Vehicles

How do you make a first generation Camaro even better? Easy. Add power and make it handle like a slot car. The next candidate for our pro-touring Camaro Hall of Fame is this wild 1969 Camaro convertible. Born with a coat of Fathom Green and a lot less engine, the restoration process was especially good to this car. It now features big-block power, a trick suspension and an eye-popping color that perfectly complements its asphalt-eating demeanor. If you liked the last few pro-touring first-gens but prefer yours topless, take a closer look at this at this ground-pounding 1969 Chevrolet Camaro convertible.

While most F-body enthusiasts have a particular year they favor, you would be hard-pressed to find one that doesn’t like the 1969 design. While the basic side profile remained the same from 1968, all sheet metal (with the exception of the hood and decklid) was reworked for a lower, wider and generally more aggressive look. When straightening out the body work on this Camaro, perfection was clearly the goal. Every corner is sharp, every line is crisp and panel fitment is far superior to assembly line work. Covering that laser straight body is an attractive shade of yellow that does a great job of accenting the cars line while turning of plenty of heads in the process. Accenting that yellow paint are two matte black stripes that further the aggressive demeanor of this F-body. All paint work is high-quality with absolutely no noticeable flaws from any angle.

The design team at Chevrolet did a great job with the 1969 Camaro’s various trim levels. This pro-tourer chose some of the best of those pieces to create a look that remains distinct yet true to form. At the front, a badge-less black grille anchors an aggressive fascia with round headlights in chrome bezels at either end. Below it, a show quality chrome bumper hangs above two driving lights. Above the grille, a functional ZL2-style cowl hood draws air cool air in the engine bay. At the sides, trim is minimal with small marker lights, chrome door handles, chrome mirrors and the Camaro’s signature simulated rear fender vents rounding out the design. Up top, the stainless A-pillars and window trim are first rate, looking fresh all around. A black cloth convertible top operates well and fits better than most stock pieces. Out back, a D80 spoiler adds some drama to the decklid while tinted taillights another chrome bumper frame a center-mounted blue bowtie emblem.

Under the hood of this bright yellow F-body, you’ll find an engine bay that mixes classic GM aesthetics with ultra-modern pro-touring functionality. At the center of that bay, a 502 cubic inch GM crate motor provides more than enough power to keep experienced drivers grinning and novices terrified . The satin black open element air cleaner wears a 502 decal that looks convincingly OEM amidst its yellow surroundings. Below, a Holley four-barrel carburetor feeds atomized fuel through a bowtie-branded intake manifold. At the sides, aluminum heads with 110cc combustion chambers are dressed in show quality chrome valve covers. The mill breathes through a set of cast iron manifolds that exhale through a set of true dual exhaust featuring Pypes mufflers that lend the big block a deep angry snarl. Lending authenticity to the bay are items such as the zinc-plated power brake booster and GM reproduction hoses that will have plenty of enthusiasts double checked the “502"decal on the air cleaner. Car :  2011 Chevrolet Camaro SS Lingenfelter LS7 800 HP
Author : Muscle Vehicles

The original ZL1 Camaro is one of the most coveted cars ever produced by General Motors. Its fire breathing aluminum 427 is truly the stuff of hot rodding legend. When Chevrolet announced that they would build a modernized version of that famed F-body on their new Zeta platform, enthusiasts across the nation immediately began spec’ing out their hopes for the car. By the time SEMA 2011 rolled around in November, it was clear that most major shops in North America had also spent the year dreaming and creating their own visions of what the hot new Camaro should be. While there was no shortage of F-bodies at SEMA that year, none took performance as seriously as this 2011 Camaro SS.

Built by Source Interlink Media, who you may know better as the parent company of magazines like Super Chevy, Hot Rod, Automobile and Motor Trend, plenty of BIG names were called in to help out. The list includes GM Performance Division, Thomson Automotive and Pedders Suspension just to name a few. After its SEMA debut, the car was taken to Lingenfelter Performance Engineering for a full shake down. The end result is a brand new Camaro packing over 800 fully streetable horsepower. There are few fifth generation Camaros that could touch this car in a quarter mile and absolutely zero with this kind of provenance. If you’ve been eyeing a new Camaro as an investment, they simply don’t get better than this.

Like many low-mileage, factory-fresh pieces, this car presents as new in every conceivable way. Glossy, smooth and finished in GM Summit White, the main color is accented by Inferno Orange racing stripes. At the front of the car, the body width V shaped grille sits below an SS exclusive mail slot hood scoop. Housed within that grille is a chrome trimmed Chevrolet bowtie and a red “SS” emblem that, by its color, denotes the car’s Rally Sport package. At each corner of the grille, RS specific HID headlights feature halos and complement round fog lights in black bezels. At the sides of the car, sculpted rear view mirrors sit atop door panels that feature pace car lettering from the 100th Indianapolis 500 held in May of 2011. The lines of the car flow from nose to tail to give the car a familiar coke bottle shape and include fast C-pillars and a contoured roof inspired by the Corvette. The rear of the car displays prominent fender ridges that emphasize the cars width and evoke an awesome crouched tiger appearance. The racing stripes terminate at a subtle rear decklid spoiler just above the taillights. The rear bumper houses an air splitter with two polished stainless exhaust tips, small square reverse lights and a yellow tag bracket. Only a red “SS” badge hints at the destructive forces under the hood.

It wasn’t that long ago when a reliable 500hp street engine was a big deal. These days, 500hp is little more than a respectable baseline. Under the hood of this Camaro lies one of GM’s potent 7.0 LS7 V8′s, built by Thomson Automotive and breathed on by the team at Lingenfelter. The end result is over 800 pavement thumping horsepower wrapped in a truly street friendly package. Despite the level of tech used in modern engine building, the essentials remain the same. An upgraded cam, forged steel crank, forged I-beam rods and forged-aluminum coated pistons build the basis of this beast. At the sides, upgraded LS9 heads are hidden under the valve covers and coil packs. Up top, a LS9 TVS positive-displacement blower with an integrated liquid-to-air charge cooler sucks air through a 90mm throttle body. At the front of the bay, a massive aluminum radiator rated to 1000 hp keeps the mill cool. The factory exhaust manifolds are surprisingly efficient, so they’ve been left in place. Aftermarket mufflers provide a rich tone without being overly loud. (Read More)

Juwan Howard : Lamborghini Aventador : Stars...
"I was a legend before I even knew they were selling my college jersey. The Fab Five era was a blessing."

Birth Name : Juwan Antonio Howard
Born :February 7, 1973 (age 39)
Hometown : Chicago, Illinois
Origin : Miami, Florida

Juwan Antonio Howard (born February 7, 1973) is an American professional basketball player who most recently played for the Miami Heat of the National Basketball Association (NBA). The Heat were Howard's eighth different NBA team. He was drafted fifth overall in the 1994 NBA Draft by the Washington Bullets. A former All-Star and All-NBA power forward, he also starred as an All-American on the Michigan Wolverines men's basketball team as part of the Fab Five recruiting class of 1991 (along with Chris Webber, Jalen Rose, Jimmy King and Ray Jackson) and, earlier, at Chicago Vocational Career Academy where he was an All-American center as well as an honors student. He won his first NBA championship with Miami in the 2012 NBA Finals.

The Fab Five reached the finals of the 1992 and 1993 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Men's Division I Basketball Championship while starting a combined 304 of a possible 350 games during their collective freshman and sophomore years. Howard is the last member of the Fab Five who remains active as a professional basketball player. Despite the sanctions and forfeited accomplishments from 1992 to 1998 by the Michigan Wolverines men's basketball due to the University of Michigan basketball scandal, Howard's 1993–94 All-American season continues to be recognized.

Howard played six-and-a-half seasons (1994–2001) for the Bullets franchise (renamed the Wizards in 1997) and three full seasons (2004–2007) for the Houston Rockets but no more than two seasons for any other team. During his rookie year with the Bullets, he became the first player to graduate on time with his class after leaving college early to play in the NBA. After one season as an All-Rookie player and a second as an All-NBA performer, he became the first NBA player to sign a $100 million contract. Although he continued to be a productive starter, he never again performed at an All-Star level.

Towards the end of his contract, he was traded at the NBA trade deadline twice to make salary cap room. During his first five seasons in the NBA, he averaged 19.3 points per game, but has only averaged 17 points per game in three of his seasons since. He was most recently a starter during the 2005–06 NBA season. In 2010, he signed with the Miami Heat and entered his 17th NBA season, during which he reached the playoffs for the sixth time and made his first career NBA Finals appearance. Howard has developed a reputation as a humanitarian for his civic commitment.
