Dutch Mandel, associate publisher and editorial director of Autoweek, has spent an extraordinary amount of time around cars. His father was in the business of car journalism, and Dutch grew up with a succession of semiexotic cars in the garage, including a 1953 C-type Jaguar, a Lotus Cortina and a ’50s-vintage Stanguellini formula junior race car. He has written for Sports Car Graphic and Car and Driver, as well as Sport Diver, Backpacker and Ski X-C magazines. For the past 26 years, he has worked in several capacities with four of the more than 30 titles owned by Crain Communications Inc., parent company of Autoweek. Dutch worked closely in the creation and development of the Autoweek Web site, as well as the magazine’s TV show, which appeared for eight years on the Speed Channel. He provided weekly consumer-focused commentary on WJR radio in Detroit. Dutch is the automotive consultant on the Pixar movie Cars 2.

Car : Subaru BRZ

There are a few cars that come into our fleet that truly excite me--the all-new ones, for sure, and the ones with the biggest engines and greatest performance. And I'm not without wanting to sit behind the wheel of a flashy rig, too, to get longing, lustful looks cast my way. It's positive reinforcement and ego stroking. My bubble will burst behind the wheel of that next minivan.

When the Subaru BRZ showed up in our office, I put my name on the list to drive it. Whoa! Talk about a long list: Folks had raised their proverbial hands to get in the driver seat well before me. That bodes well for the small, stylish two-door coupe. The anticipation for what it could do--and the want of others to drive it--didn't stop even when the keys were in my pocket. A half-hour before I wanted to go on my own test drive, I was relieved of the keys with a promise that the car would come back unharmed. It did.

I was interested in this car for a couple of reasons. The recipe of a lightweight, small and bare-bones coupe intrigues me most. Not since the Mazda Miata has there been something like this, and the market hungers for it. (Read More)

Who Wants To Drive, Party And Drive Like A Rock Star?
Blog : Auto Week

Is it so very wrong of us to want to have fun again in 2012? Should we be taken to task for exploring the great outdoors with like-minded people, on a quest for good times and, yes, perhaps even the opportunity to win a car?

That's the American dream, dammit, and we're going to pursue it with unending vigor once again, this time in the 2012 Autoweek America Adventure!

Registration just opened for the event, and if you want to be part of the fun, let me suggest that you jump on it right away. Yes, the route is selected—it starts in Colorado and ends in Las Vegas—and we're limiting participants to 50 teams. So get on the computer, hock the children, and pony up for some great times.

Here are some more details: On Oct. 24, 2012, teams will arrive in Colorado Springs, Colo. The four-star Cheyenne Mountain Resort will host the teams' stay, while Pikes Peak International Raceway will host our first bit of speed fun. That evening, teams will meet the competition at a private dinner reception inside the Carriage Museum. The next morning, teams will receive their first mission envelope—and for six days, it's up to their navigation and clue-solving skills to determine the correct route. (Read More)

How I Came Around to Cruisin'
Blog : Auto Week

OK, I will admit it: I grew up a road-racing fanatic. As a kid, my automotive heroes were guys who could turn left and right. And why not? The heroes of my day included drivers named Surtees, Rodríguez, Rodríguez, Follmer, Donohue, Revson, Gurney and Savage. Heck, even Tony Adamowicz and Horst Kwech were on my short list of drivers to watch.

So the idea—nay, the notion—that someone would actually enjoy driving slowly up the street and then back again, with the occasional stopover in a parking lot, held absolutely zero attraction to me. No, I don't want to be a snob about it, but cruisin' just didn't make it for me.

Of course, that all changed in high school and when I reached driving age. There I was in Reno, Nev., and my used 1965 notchback Ford Mustang with its 289-cubic-inch V8 mated to a three-speed automatic but also fitted with an 850CFM Holley carb (hey, gas was cheap back then) was respectable.

However, it wasn't nearly as cool as Mike Doyle's 1964 Pontiac GTO, which rumbled and snarled and was built to within a trigger-happy breath of its life. We would jump in Mike's car on Saturday night and hit the Biggest Little City In the World's main drag. We'd connect with our friends and cause some mischief and everything was right in the world. This was our social networking. (Read More)

"This is The Situation right here, my abs are so ripped up it's..we call it The Situation."

Birth Name : Michael Sorrentino
Born : July 4, 1982
Location : Staten Island, New York, U.S.
Occupations : Television personality, model
Years Active : 2009–present

Michael Sorrentino (born July 4, 1982), publicly known by his nickname The Situation, is an American television personality. He has appeared on the MTV reality show Jersey Shore since its premiere in 2009.

Sorrentino has been a cast member on Jersey Shore since its debut in 2009. Since appearing on that show, Sorrentino has been a guest on many TV series, such as The Howard Stern Show, The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien,  Jay Leno Show, Lopez Tonight SportsNation, Chelsea Lately, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, and Conan.

Sorrentino was a contestant on Season 11 of Dancing with the Stars, eliminated on the 4th week. His partner was Karina Smirnoff.

In 2010, Sorrentino appeared with Bristol Palin in a public service announcement for The Candie's Foundation, as part of its Pause Before You Play campaign to prevent teen pregnancy.

In January 2011, Sorrentino signed on to star in the "Random Talent" webseries co-starring British comedian Ben Green.

Sorrentino made more than $5 million in 2010, the second highest of any other reality star after Kim Kardashian. This money was accrued through endorsements with Devotion Vodka, Reebok Zigtech shoes,[citation needed] as well as a ghost-written autobiography, a rap song, a workout DVD, a vitamin line for GNC, a clothing line, and appearances including Jersey Shore and Dancing with the Stars. His book release was described as a failure, selling an estimated 12,000 copies as of January 2011.

In March 2011 Sorrentino appeared on the Comedy Central Roast of Donald Trump, where fellow participant Lisa Lampanelli reported that he was widely booed by the audience. In August of that year, Sorrentino was offered a "substantial" sum of money by fashion retailer Abercrombie & Fitch not to wear the company's clothes. A spokesman for the company explained that "MrSorrentino's association with our brand could cause significant damage to our image." In November 2011, Sorrentino filed a lawsuit against A&F after they made shirts that read "The Fitchuation" and "GTL...You Know The Deal."

On February 22, 2012, Sorrentino appeared in a small cameo role on ABC's Suburgatory.

Car : 2012 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1
Author : Michael Harley

Adhered to the Hamilton Hall dorm wall at Wright State University is a glossy poster of a jet-black sports car. It hangs low over an unmade bed, its corner blemished with a slight tear from an errantly placed thumbtack during orientation week.

A young engineering undergraduate, sitting at a desk just a few feet away, is staring directly at the poster. Instead of reviewing for an upcoming exam, his eyes remain fixated on the vehicle's sleek bodywork, ominous quad exhaust pipes and Brembo carbon-ceramic brakes. Locked in a trance, the student daydreams about what it would be like to drive the sinister-looking monster.

Unbeknown to that 19-year-old scholar, and thousands of miles from Wright State University, Autoblog holds the key to the vehicle pictured on that very poster. It is the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1. With a 638-horsepower supercharged V8 mated to a six-speed manual transmission and a top speed of 205 miles per hour, it is the most powerful production car in General Motors' history.

The ZR1 has been upgraded and enhanced for 2012, so what is it like to drive America's premier sports car on public roads? Can the beast be reasonably tamed? Be pleased to learn that this evil brute is nearly everything expected, a little less and then a whole lot more. (Read More)

Car : 2012 Buick Regal GS
Author : Jeff Sabatini

Of the remaining General Motors nameplates, Buick is the one that's most difficult to wrap your mind around. On the one hand, it's supposed to be a premium brand, but on the other, it's selling vehicles with sticker prices that tend to start in the $20,000 price range, seemingly encroaching on Chevrolet territory. To wit: The Buick Verano is a bit over $23,000 and the Buick Regal starts just under $28,000, while Chevy sells its Cruze, Malibu and Impala in that same range. Even the Buick LaCrosse, whose price shot up nearly $4,000 this year, starts at $31,045. Indeed, GM must be using a mandoline to price the different versions of its sedans clustered around the $25,000-$30,000 price range.

But it's over that threshold where things get really perplexing. Because whether we understand GM's strategy or not, a twenty-some-thousand dollar Buick makes sense. You look at all the boxes you have to tick on a mainstream brand product to get the amenities that Buick offers and you dump that and all the data about the premium competition in a spreadsheet, and you can probably justify a Buick as a wise purchase. If you're an actuary or an accountant, all the better.

A Regal GS with a $35,310 base price (or an as-tested cost of $38,155 like ours), however, has stepped onto an entirely different playing field, like a junior varsity kid getting bumped up to play on Friday night. This isn't the sort of car you research over the Internet and lease after a five-minute test drive. It's purportedly a driver's car, something to seek out and manhandle. We thus find it rather disingenuous to compare it with cars from Acura and Volvo – the Regal GS is really scrapping with vetted sports sedans like the Audi A4 and BMW 3 Series, and even its kissing-GM-cousin, the larger Cadillac CTS. Car : 2012 Audi R8
Author : Michael Hartley

The Audi R8 road car, not to be confused with the automaker's winning R8 Le Mans Prototype racer, first arrived in the States for the 2008 model year. Sharing underpinnings with the Lamborghini Gallardo, the two-seat exotic debuted as the German automaker's flagship and most expensive offering. With Audi Space Frame (ASF) technology keeping weight relatively low and Quattro all-wheel drive for grip, performance was impressive even though it was a bit shy in the power department – standard fitment was a 4.2-liter V8 rated at 425 horsepower. Soon afterward, a more powerful 5.2-liter V10 arrived. It added a bit of weight, but the newfound performance bumped the R8 into supercar territory. The coupe's top came off in 2009, when the R8 Spyder variant debuted at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

Last spring, as Audi's flagship sports car entered its fourth year, the German automaker announced a new R8 was under development. By "adding lightness," boosting power and thoroughly reworking the suspension and brakes, the company promised to inject new levels of performance into the R8 – a vehicle not scheduled for replacement until 2014.

Officially introduced at the 2010 Paris Motor Show, the 2012 Audi R8 GT will land on U.S. soil with a base price of $196,800 (excluding $1,250 in destination charges). That makes it about $87,000 more than the entry-level R8 4.2 FSI with a six-speed manual transmission and about $39,000 more than the standard R8 5.2 FSI coupe with an R-Tronic transmission. In addition to a very short options list that includes carbon fiber-reinforced ceramic brakes with anodized red calipers, audio upgrades and a choice of forged wheels, Audi will offer the R8 GT in four "Exclusive" colors (Suzuka Gray, Samoa Orange, Ice Silver and Phantom Black).  (Read More)

1966 Oldsmobile 442 : Classic Cars
1966 Oldsmobile 442 : Classic Cars

Technically, pre-1968 Olds 442s weren’t an actual model, but rather “442″ was an option package available for the Oldsmobile Cutlass. The standard L78 400 cid engine incorporated a single 4bbl carburetor and was rated at 350 hp.

The favored set-up for muscle car buyers was the upgraded L69, which was a one-year-only configuration that featured a hotter cam and a triple 2bbl carb “tri-power” arrangement, which helped increase the power rating by another 10 horses.

Quarter-mile runs were as quick as 14.8 seconds. Rarest of the rare was the W-30 version of the tri-power motor, which also incorporated an air induction system via tubing from the front bumper. There were only 54 factory-released copies of the W-30, although another 97 were dealer-modified installations. Finding a W-30 442 today is next to impossible.

Ken Block (born November 21, 1967, in Long Beach, California)  is a professional rally driver with the Monster World Rally Team. Block is also one of the co-founders and recently appointed Chief Brand Officer of DC Shoes. Block has also competed in many action sports events including skateboarding, snowboarding, and motocross.

On January 6, 2010 the Monster World Rally Team announced Block as their driver for selected rounds of the World Rally Championship, in which he will be campaigning the Monster/Ford Racing Focus RS WRC 08. His car will be prepared and run by the North of England based M-Sport, who also prepare the official Ford WRC cars. He will be simultaneously running in his sixth season of the Rally America Championship in an open class Ford Fiesta, as well as his fifth X-games. Block will also be the first ever American driver to campaign for the World Rally Championship. On February 27, Block won the Rally in the 100 Acre Wood (Rally America) for the 5th consecutive time. This broke the record held by John Buffum. Block is currently being trained by former Ford factory driver Markko Märtin. At the Spain rally, he won his first 2 points in World Rally Championship.

On March 23, Block and his co-driver Alex Gelsomino were taken to hospital, having rolled their Ford Fiesta RS WRC during the shakedown stage of the 2011 Rally de Portugal in Faro, Portugal. A representative of the Monster World Rally team later stated that both men were fine.

2012 Hyrbid Car Of The Year Award : Hyundai...
2012 Hyrbid Car Of The Year Award : Hyundai Sonata : Award Winners

Winners of this year’s Autobytel & AutoPacific Consumer Awards have been released and the top-rated hybrid car winner is the 2012 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid.

This is the 16th edition of this annual Vehicle Satisfaction Awards. Based solely on input from actual owners—more than 75,000 of them—taken during the first quarter of the year, AutoPacific’s 2012 Vehicle Satisfaction Awards (VSAs) provide a unique look at which vehicles provide the most satisfying overall ownership experience. Many other awards focus solely on specific aspects of that experience, or the subjective opinions of the media, and can’t identify the vehicles that really satisfy real drivers.

For example, when looking at the top-rated hybrid car in this year’s VSAs, the winner wasn’t the one with the absolute highest mpg ratings. Yes, the main reason people buy hybrids is to save on fuel costs, but, at this stage in the game, people expect that plus all the benefits found in a traditionally powered vehicle, too. And that’s exactly what they get in this year’s highest-rated hybrid car, the 2012 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid.

Part of the equation is Hyundai’s satisfying price tag of $25,850 that is the lowest MSRP of any hybrid mid-size sedan on the market.

The Sonata Hybrid also delivers the highest net horsepower in its class, and, thanks to Hyundai’s “Blue Drive” hybrid powertrain, EPA marks of up to 35 mpg city/40 mpg highway/37 mpg combined. Another Blue Drive benefit comes from the system’s advanced battery technology that relies on polymer gel electrolytes instead of the typical nickel-metal hydride setup. In plain English, the result is a battery that is 25 percent lighter, takes up 40 percent less space, delivers 10 percent better efficiency and can maintain available power for 1.7 times longer than traditional hybrid batteries.

An impressive list of standard content also contributed to the vehicle’s recognition as the highest-rated hybrid car in the 2012 VSAs.

Competitors included the Toyota Camry Hybrid, which was completely redesigned for the 2012 model year, as well as two luxury choices: The Buick LaCrosse eAssist and Lincoln MKZ Hybrid. The highest-rated dedicated hybrid was the Lexus CT 200h, which tied the Camry Hybrid for second place in the segment.

The most satisfying EV was the Chevrolet Volt, coming in just a few points behind the Buick and Lincoln.
